Our Islanders are coming off a huge first game victory in preseason with new rules, new players over the rangers 5-1. The Flyers are 1-0 beating Atlanta 8-6 as Gagne recorded a hat trick in the game. It was 6-2 in the third till Atlanta faught back w/ 4 goals only to come up short... It is expected the Flyers will have in the lineup such notables as Mike Rathje, Joni Pitkanen, Simon Gagne, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards. Antero Niittymaki and Jamie Storr will be the goaltenders. When the Islanders face the Flyers tonight in a pre-season game in Trenton, it will mark the Islander debuts of 2005 top draft picks Ryan O'Marra (first round) and Dustin Kohn (second). "I've been looking forward to this since the day the Islanders drafted me," said O'Marra. "The scrimmages are great, but it's nothing like wearing the Islanders uniform against another NHL team. I'm sure it's going to be an experience I will never forget." Several players will be appearing in their first pre-season game of 2005, after the Islanders beat the Rangers last night, 5-1, before a wildly enthusiastic crowd of more than 12,000 fans. Besides O'Marra and Kohn, they are: defensemen Joel Bouchard, Tomi Pettinen and Radek Martinek; and forwards Wyatt Smith, Travis Brigley, Kevin Colley, 2004 second round pick Blake Comeau and 2003 second round pick Jeremy Colliton. "This will be a good opportunity to take a look at a lot of players competing for spots this season, along with kids that we expect will have an impact soon down the road," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling. http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islan...ports-headlines TRENTON -- On the second night of a back-to-back, in the midst of a stretch of five games in six nights, Steve Stirling chose to give the future of the franchise a long look. With regulars Alexei Yashin, Miroslav Satan, Oleg Kvasha and Mark Parrish given the night off, Stirling formed a "Kid Line" of the organization's top young prospects for last night's 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers at Sovereign Bank Arena. Ryan O'Marra, the team's first-round pick in July, centered a line with a 2004 second-round draft choice, Blake Comeau, and 20-year-old Jeremy Colliton. The trio, which served as a No. 2 line, had a slow start against a Flyers team that was also missing several NHL regulars, but finished the game strong. Another rookie, defenseman Dustin Kohn, also saw extensive minutes. Petteri Nokelainen, the team's 2004 first-round pick, was also in the lineup. "They've got to find out what it takes," Stirling said of the heavy doses of ice time given to the young pups. O'Marra and Comeau were also selected by Stirling to participate in the postgame shootout. Neither scored against Flyers rookie goalie Antero Niittymaki, but Mike York did. The Flyers won the shootout because Simone Gagne and rookie Mike Richards beat Garth Snow, who was otherwise solid in goal with 23 saves behind a very young team. Comeau shot high to end the shootout. O'Mar.ra missed the five-hole. "I was nervous," the 18-year-old O'Marra said. "It's tough because back in juniors, a breakaway is pretty much a guaranteed goal for me. Here, it's not so much." Despite 27 minor penalties, 15 of which were called against the Flyers, the final score was low. Each team had only one power-play goal. The Islanders, with York, Jason Blake and Trent Hunter as its top line, went 1-for-15 with the advantage and was unable to score on two early five-on-threes. But the team's penalty kill, which also included York, Blake and Hunter, along with Mattias Weinhandl, killed 11 of 12 Flyers power plays, including three five-on-threes in the first period. New Flyers defenseman Mike Rathje opened the scoring on a power play at 9:16 of the first period when his point shot tipped York's stick and deflected past Snow. But Wyatt Smith buried a rebound at 10:52 of the first, also on the power play, to make it 1-1. After a first period of 12 penalties, the second period was much cleaner with only two minors per team. There were also fighting majors given out to Richards and Joel Bouchard. The winner was scored off a goal-mouth scramble at 5:57 of the third when Branko Radivojevic tipped in a loose puck in the crease. On an ensuing power play, the Islanders had a chance to tie but Niittymaki stopped Hunter, Blake and Brent Sopel on one-timer attempts. The Islanders had four more power-play opportunities before the game ended, but could not convert. Stirling used the Kid Line on the power play several times late. "I was playing to win," Stirling said. "Looking at the lineup, O'Marra's a scorer, Comeau's a scorer, so why not?" |

Why couldn't I listen to this game? Why didn't the NHL post a box score? There has been very little written about the Philly game. |
