The question is, who sucks more? Bouchard or Pettinen? I say keep Bouchard, if only because we've actually seen how much Pettinen sucks during actual games. Bouchard's suckiness will be a new experience. |

http://newyorkislanders.com/pressbox/postgame.asp?id=467 Penalties and inconsistent play riddled the Islanders' effort Saturday night as they fell to the Boston Bruins, 6-2. Steve Stirling's squad dropped to 2-2 on their exhibition calendar and face the New Jersey Devils Sunday night at 8pm at the Continental Airlines Arena. The Bruins opened the scoring just 2:31 into the game when Ian Moran flicked a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle and beat Wade Dubielewicz between the arm and chest protector. The Bruins' lead lasted to the midway point of the same period after Petteri Nokelainen drew a cross-checking penalty on Boston's Jiri Slegr. That's when Robert Nilsson jammed home the rebound of Chris Campoli's point shot that was initially rejected by goaltender Hannu Toivonen's left pad. The Bruins' netminder originally robbed Justin Papineau moments earlier off a pretty passing sequence initiated by Alexei Yashin and Nilsson. Miroslav Satan, who played the point on this powerplay sequence, notched the secondary assist. Special teams continued to be the story of the first 20 minutes of the game, and the Isles wound up on the short end of things when they were down two men for 1:24 with Ryan O'Marra and Joel Bouchard in the sin bin. While the Isles tried to survive that situation, Oleg Kvasha buried Brian Leetch with a cross-check in front of the Islanders' cage with 24 seconds left on the two-man advantage. The Bruins, who spent nearly all of the powerplay in the Isles' end, finally converted when Glen Murray ripped a one-timer over Dubielewicz's right shoulder with 6:11 to go and 24 seconds left on Bouchard's infraction. Former Bridgeport Sound Tiger Ben Guite put the Bruins up 3-1 when Ryan Caldwell lost the puck in the neutral zone while skating up the ice. Colton Orr fed the puck up to Guite, who had a near breakaway and buried his shot past a sprawling Dubielewicz. After Janne Niinimaa argued a penalty late in the first and was tagged an additional two minutes, Boston tallied another man-up goal when Eric Healey smacked home a centering feed from Ben Walter after a 2-on-1 developed in front of the Islander cage. Murray notched his second of the game when he sprinted behind Bouchard to pot a backhander under Dubielewicz with 8:01 left in the second. Walter made a pretty feed between the Islanders' defense to allow Murray behind the defensive coverage. Caldwell redeemed himself with 2:47 to go in the middle stanza when he ripped a slapper past Toivonen. A faceoff win in the offensive zone by Papineau earned the forward the lone assist on the goal. After the Isles failed to convert a 5-on-3 in the opening moments of the third period, Boston's Walter extended his team's lead by snapping a top-shelf bullet under the crossbar. A giveaway deep in the Islander zone by O'Marra led to Thornton finding the Bruins' winger alone in front. http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islan...islanders-print Alan Hahn MANCHESTER, N.H. - The incessant whistles that have plagued the NHL game as promised during this preseason is only something to complain about for those who can't take advantage of it. The NHL's officials have insisted they will not waver from the obstruction crackdown - even if Don Koharksi and Wes McCauley seemed to put their whistles away in the third period of Friday night's game between the Islanders and Bruins - and therefore there will be power plays aplenty. But power plays are only good if you score during them. The Islanders have plenty of weapons to have a good power play, but haven't cashed in as often as they could. "I think it's going to take a little time," said Oleg Kvasha, who centers what appears to be the No. 2 power play unit with Mark Parrish and Mattias Weinhandl. "Hopefully it'll be ready by the time the season starts." It could have been useful in last night's sloppy, uninspired 6-2 preseason loss to the Bruins at Verizon Wireless Arena. The Bruins beefed up their lineup from Friday by adding Glen Murray and Patrice Bergeron to a roster that already had Joe Thornton and Brian Leetch. Robert Nilsson gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead in the game on a power play goal at 10:02 of the first period, but the power play struggled the rest of the night, as it was 1-for-9. The biggest problem with the units, which also involved Alexei Yashin and Miroslav Satan, is not enough movement and not enough shots. "You have to establish the shot," Parrish said. "If you don't, you don't really scare the penalty kill. If you're just going to pass it around the perimeter, they're just going to let you pass it around the perimeter. Until you establish your shot, that's when seams start to open up." Tonight the Islanders (2-2 in preseason) finish a stretch of five games in six nights against the New Jersey Devils at Continental Airlines Arena. With three days of practice this week with two more games in between, Steve Stirling said the focus will be on the power play. "We haven't had time to work on it," he said, "but we will this week." Notes & Quotes: Goalie Wade Dubielewicz played the entire game and made 25 saves . . . Ryan Caldwell scored the Islanders' other goal . . . Glen Murray had two goals . . . Brian Leetch's appearance in the lineup for Boston for the second consecutive game means it is most likely he will not make his Madison Square Garden return today against the Rangers, but he may be in town to see his wife and new son, who was born Tuesday . . . Prospects Ryan O'Marra and Blake Comeau were both reassigned to their respective junior teams after last night's game. Both had impressive camps, and both played well in Friday's game.
