Rick DiPietro's sliding left-skate save on Rangers rookie Petr Prucha in the final attempt of the shootout was the difference as the Islanders posted a 3-2 victory over the Rangers in Madison Square Garden tonight. In the shootout, Jason Blake and Martin Rucinsky failed in the first round of attempts, then Mark Parrish and Jaromir Jagr scored. Shawn Bates put the Islanders up 2-1 in the shootout, meaning DiPietro had to stop Prucha for the win. Despite the impressive young Ranger's best efforts, DiPietro stopped him with his left skate as the Islanders had their victory in the final game of the exhibition season. "We were all right tonight," said Islanders head coach Steve Stirling after the game. "We still have a lot of work to do before we go to Buffalo, especially on the power play." Janne Niinimaa got the Isles on the board just 1:40 into the contest on a fluky goal that former Islander goaltender Weekes would want back. Oleg Kvasha made a nifty play along the left wing boards to draw a pair of Rangers’ defenders, which allowed Niinimaa to pinch from his left point position unchecked. As the Islander defenseman cruised through the slot, he flicked a soft backhander on net that Weekes should have easily pushed into the corner. Instead, he let the puck roll up his stick, over his shoulder and barely across the goal line. The Islanders nearly made it a 2-0 game less than a minute later when they went on the powerplay as the Rangers were charged with a delay of game penalty. Weekes made amends twice with top-notch rejections. A rocket from Brent Sopel’s right point position was kicked out by the New York netminder as Mark Parrish dug away for the rebound. The second came off a pretty one-time feed from Robert Nilsson behind the Blueshirts’ net that Trent Hunter immediately snapped off, which was foiled by Weekes’ left pad. Midway through the first period, a giveaway by Niinimaa helped the hosts tie the game via the powerplay. After Rick DiPietro had cleared his zone and nearly sprung Jason Blake, Niinimaa wound up with the puck. But he lost control with Jagr on top of him, setting the stage for a 2-on-1 into the Islanders’ end. Jagr was left with plenty of time to measure up DiPietro and snap a shot into the twine. Sopel played a big part in netting the Isles’ second tally of the game with 8:23 left in the first with the Rangers’ Ville Nieminen in the box. His pass to Mike York at the left point allowed the former Ranger to tee-up a shot on net, which hit Hunter in the slot. Yet, Hunter was alert enough to find the puck at his skates and flick the disc past Weekes. In the second period, the Islanders dominated much of the territorial play. But it was the Rangers who’d notched the only goal when Jed Ortmeyer wristed a shorthanded tally past DiPietro with five minutes left in the period off a 2-on-1. Kvasha did GREAT last night! I was finally iimpressed. It was really GOOD to see him go after someone for whacking Rick in the helmet. If that's what it takes to get that man going... so be it. Ricky can take a whack or 2! I was surprised to see Jason back 20 seconds after Deb Kaufman announced it was a bruise behind the knee. They must have shot him with something and sent the energizer bunny back out, because when he hit the ice, he hit it with a vengance. But he stayed out way too long on one or two shifts. Nice to see Goddard over Puritan... the gorilla on skates. |

I thought the isles skated pretty well, not great but good. Their PP is atrocious. Their plan is to get it to the point for the shot and look for a deflection or rebound. This is the NHL not HS hockey. When the Rags went 1-2-1 on the "diamond" that JD wouldnt shut up about, the Isles should have created a 2 on 1 or 3 on 1 down low and abandoned the point shot, but they showed they were not flexible enough to read the D and change. Very poor execution on the PP. Weinhandl did not impress me at all, yet Hunter and Kvasha were great. Kvasha should run the PP all the time. He is by far our best playmaker and passer. He even used his size to run over a few Rags. Damn his potential is limitless. The Rick was great too. So calm and very little movement on saves. Yashin and Satan will eventually figure it out and have a great season. I would keep Nilsson on their line. Speaking of Nilsson, he is special, he sees the ice great, is in great position, now if he can only hit the net with his shots. What a set up to Hunter. All in all, from what I saw last night, we out played them 5 on 5, we did good on the PK and even the shootout. It was the PP that was the major concern. |

Aside from the game being a bit...I dare say...boring. I think there were a few positives worth noting. First & foremost (for me) was Niilson !!!! The kid is a playmaker for sure...and he can move...I'd like to see him on that 1st line. -Kvasha was lookin real good...and faster ?? (and BIG) -Hunter...gonna have a great season...no doubt about it -The Rick mad some good stops...and that left leg has some REACH !! And he looked super confident handling the puck. -Yash looked good too...hitting...making plays...he just couldn't bury it. -I'm gonna say it...BATES...had a damn good game...boy had some pep in his step...and looks to be putting his "funk" behind him. Obviosly we are not on the level we should be yet, given the talent we have. But, It's early...the boys will get into the groove...we just need to be a little patient. ...no worries |

to be fair...I should acknowledge that...the rags played pretty well. And Weekes was just damn good...he stopped some doozies !!! I actually don't think the rags may be as bad as we thought they were gonna be. |

Game Misconduct

so the league knew heading into the preseason that special teams will be very important to the new NHL, so the isles went somewhere in the neighborhood of 8 / 1,000,000,000 on the powerplay. Splendid! |
