After holding on for a 4-3 win over the Thrashers last night, now it's on to solving the magician that is Jaromir Jagr. The Islanders won both games of a home-and-home last week with the Rangers – one in a shootout – but they could not stop Jagr, who was a threat every time he stepped on the ice and had a hat trick on Thursday. If the Islanders want to go 3-for-3 against their rivals, they'll need to do a better job on Jagr.

"He's one of the best players in the world, if not the best, and he's completely committed himself to what his team is trying to accomplish on the ice," said Steve Stirling after today's practice at Islanders Iceworks in Syosset. "While completing our assignments on the rest of the team, we need to be on Jagr because he's so explosive."

A leading candidate for even more responsibility is defenseman Alexei Zhitnik, the Islanders' second-leading scorer who is 1-9-10 in nine games and is averaging 25 minutes of icetime each game. "Z has been a gem for us," said Stirling. "Just give him his 25 minutes and watch him do his thing. When he is on the ice, I have no worries."

Brent Sopel is doubtful for Thursday's game at the Garden, while Mark Parrish's return is a possibility. Parrish practiced today. If Petteri Nokelainen, who sat out practice with an injury that kept him off the ice Tuesday night for a few minutes, and Parrish are unable to play, the Islanders will have a forward from Bridgeport ready to go.

INJURIES
Forward Mark Parrish (hip strain) is day-to-day.
Defenseman Brent Sopel (left wrist sprain) is day-to-day.

Total Man-Games Lost (After 9 games): 10
2003-04 Total Man-Games Lost (After 9 games): 2

RECENT TRANSACTIONS
October 14 - The Islanders recalled goaltender Wade Dubielewicz from Bridgeport.
October 17 - The Islanders reassigned goaltender Wade Dubielewicz to Bridgeport.

Ok, now lets see how good we can be. The Rags are on a little slide (caused by us thank you very much) and we can move into first with a regulation win. A tie with a ot/so win. Tonight we see what we are made of. The Rags coming off 2 loses to us and 1 to buffalo will be skating hard and fast. Lets go into their building and come back to LI with 2 big points.

GO ISLANDERS!!!! :number1:

RANGERS SUCK!!!!
:P

A win and we are 1/2 way to repaying the Rags for last season(played).
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Wow...didn't realize it but a win here would propel us in to first :)

I know being in first 10 games in to the season doesn't mean much but teams in first tend to battle harder to hold on to that top spot. A win tonight here could be a huge morale booster and maybe give us a little swagger.

The Rangers have a very good balance of youth and vets. They've had 4 days between games are no doubt itching for retribution in the form of 2 points.
They'll come out flying.
Keys to the game for us, stay out of the box early and if you take any penalties, kill them. Can't afford to get down early.
If the Islanders get past that first 10 minutes without trailing and if they can get the lead,
it could hurt the fragile confidence of the younger Ranger players.
I don't want to see any shenanigans, the games have been very entertaining so far without it.

Dipietro will also be a the key and I think he may have something to prove to himself and the team by stopping Jagr.
Our D needs to stop collapsing in front of the net and pressure the Ranger puck carriers to force turnovers.

A whole ***damn year without hockey and now the 3rd rivalry game in less than 10 days.
It just doesn't get any better than this!

LETS GO ISLANDERS!

Ya know..I think the team is getting their shit together...but they simply take too many penalties. I know that's probably their main focus right now...unfortunatly...tonight isn't gonna be the night where the get the penalies down to 5 or so. I just can't see an Isles/Rags game where there's not a ton of penalties on both sides. And considering how hot Jagr is right now....I'll bet he draws quite a few as we struggle to cover him.
On the flip side...a rusty Lundquist is in net tonight...and although he's looked good....expect our top line to take advantage.

OH...and expect the White Sox to win the World Series...

Zhitnik's task: Try to stop Jagr

Zhitnik's task: STOP Jagr
Quote:

Zhitnik's task: Try to stop Jagr
BY ERIK BOLAND
October 27, 2005

At a generously listed 5-11, Alexei Zhitnik does not fit the prototype of the tall, bruising NHL defenseman.

But, Zhitnik was quick to point out with a laugh, "I'm heavy ... I'm not 6-1 or 6-2, but I have my 220 pounds, so I'm not the lightest defenseman in the league," continued the 33-year-old Zhitnik, signed by the Islanders as a free agent Aug. 2. "My favorite player was [longtime Bruins and Avalanche defenseman] Ray Bourque and he wasn't a big defenseman. Guys who can skate, get down the ice can play. You don't have to be big to play good defensively."

Coach Steve Stirling has maligned his defense at times this season, but he practically emotes when talking about Zhitnik, who logged a team-high 26 minutes, 14 seconds on the ice in Tuesday's 4-3 victory over the Thrashers.

"Boy, is he strong and he's got legs like tree stumps, so he can play against the big boys because he uses his legs," Stirling said. "He loves his minutes, he loves playing against the top lines. Loves to be physical. I think the new rules have cut a little bit into that [but] I think he's adjusted better than any of our players."

The Islanders (5-4), and Zhitnik in particular, will need to make adjustments tonight when they play Jaromir Jagr and the Rangers at the Garden. The Islanders snapped their six-game slide against the Rangers with a 3-2 victory Oct. 19 and added a 5-4 victory one day later. But Jagr scored four of his league-best 10 goals in those games, including a hat trick in the second contest.

"He can put the puck in the net," Zhitnik said. "You have to be aware of where he is on the ice. He can beat you one on one. It's really difficult to play against him, especially with the new rules. As soon as he gets ahead of you, you're done. You're not allowed to grab or hold, so position-wise, you have to make sure he's in front of you."

Zhitnik has been in front of many of the Islanders' successful sweeps down the ice, not unlike his idol, Bourque, the league's all-time leading scorer as a defenseman with 1,579 points. Zhitnik had two assists Tuesday to extend his points streak to five games and leads the league in power-play assists with eight.

"Even when I was a teenager, the first rule for a defenseman was get the puck, pass the puck," Zhitnik said. "Most important, get the puck to the forwards, so they can do their jobs." Zhitnik is more than doing his so far.

Notes & quotes: Coach Steve Stirling said injured defenseman Brent Sopel (sprained wrist) and injured forward Mark Parrish (hip strain) were still day-to-day, but doubtful for tonight's game at the Garden against the Rangers. "Sopel's getting better; he skated today," Stirling said. Parrish did not skate yesterday. "Parrish yesterday [Tuesday] was better," Stirling said. "He did some weight work, which is a good sign."

Tonight: Islanders at Rangers, 7 p.m.

TV: FSN, MSG. Radio: WBBR (1130); WEPN (1050) or WABC (770) if there is a World Series Game5.

Either way, young blood will likely help us come out flying! And this is what I wanna see!

Anyone else notice that this is one of the very few rivalries to really survive in the new NHL? Wooohooo!

Ugh! These penalties are death! This ref is nuts!!

Some thoughts after 20mins: we need to shoot more, block shots, and stay out of the penalty box.

Boyohboy I would hate to see Sterling's face after that last penalty by Luke!

GO ISLES GO! ;)

The first was ugly, the second a little better looking. I'm hoping that the third will be even better. We are still in this game. 2 goal is doable. Thank Hunter for keeping it at 2. Now if Kvasha can finally get that first goal. Not from a lack of trying. This is where the Rangers confidence is shaky, in the third. This game is far from over.
