As long as there have been Islanders-Rangers games, it has always been an issue – battling a potential letdown after a game with their rivals. On Saturday, the question will loom even larger than usual. Can the Islanders stay on a high after not just one win against the Rangers, but after getting two on back-to-back nights?

It figures to be another excellent early-season test for the new Islanders. And if that wasn’t enough, the Islanders will play a Montreal team that can flat-out fly.

“We have to keep it going,” said alternate captain Brad Lukowich. “We’re happy with the two wins against the Rangers after an awful loss in Philly, but now it’s over and the focus is on the Canadiens.”

ISLANDERS NOTES
The Islanders are 45-60-15-0 lifetime against the Montreal Canadiens.  The Islanders are 30-24-6-0 against Montreal at the Nassau Coliseum and have a record of 15-36-9-0 in Montreal against the Canadiens.  In 16 visits to the Bell Centre, the Islanders are 4-11-1 against the Canadiens.  The Islanders, who lost both meetings to the Canadiens at the Bell Centre in 2003-04, are 1-4 in their last five visits to Montreal and are 3-7 in their last 10, including four shutouts.  New York’s last win in Montreal at the Bell Centre was a 6-3 win on March 20, 2003. The Islanders and Canadiens split the four meetings last season (2003-04), with both teams winning both games on home ice.

Montreal goaltender Jose Theodore has recorded four shutouts at the Bell Centre against the Islanders during his career.  Theodore has shut out the Islanders on January 19, 2000 (3-0), January 10, 2002 (4-0), November 7, 2002 (3-0) and on October 23, 2003 (3-0).  Theodore has a career record of 8-7-1 and 1.80 goals against average and four shutouts against the Islanders.

The Islanders are 2-2 on the road this season.  They will play five of their next 10 games on the road and nine of their next 14 away from the Nassau Coliseum.

Center Alexei Yashin extended his point streak to five games with an assist in last night's 5-4 win over the New York Rangers. Yashin, who leads the team in scoring with seven points (3+4), has recorded six points (2+4) in the last five games and has a point in six of seven games this season.

RW Aaron Asham recorded his first shorthanded goal since he was a member of the Montreal Canadiens (1999-00 season) on Thursday against the Rangers.  The goal was Asham’s first of the season and the shorthanded tally was his first while as a member of the New York Islanders. He assisted on Miroslav Satan’s first period goal and then added the shorthanded goal 1:47 into the second period to collect his first multiple-point game of the season. The assist was also his first point of the season. Asham was drafted by the Canadiens in the third round (71st overall) of the 1996 Entry Draft.  He was traded to the Islanders with Montreal’s fifth round choice (Marcus Paulsson) in the 2002 Entry Draft for Mariusz Czerkawski, June 22, 2002.  Asham played in parts of four seasons with Montreal, recording 20 points (11+9) and 138 penalty minutes in 121 games with the Canadiens. He is the only player on the team to have ties to Montreal.

RW Mark Parrish recorded his first multiple-goal game of the season as he recorded two goals, including the game-winning goal in Thursday’s 5-4 win over the New York Rangers.  Parrish scored both goals while the Islanders were on the power play.  The last time he scored two goals in a game was against the Montreal Canadiens on March 31, 2004.  It was the first time in his career that he has recorded two power play goals in a game.  Overall, Parrish has recorded five points (3+2) in seven games this season.  He has a two-game point streak in progress with 2-1-3 totals and has registered a point in four of seven games.

For the second straight week, the Islanders scored three goals to start the game as they defeated the New York Rangers 5-4 on Thursday (October 20) at the Nassau Coliseum.  The Islanders scored three goals on their first three shots of the game in a span of 2:47 against the Rangers. Last Thursday (October 13), the Islanders scored three goals in a span of 8:24 as they jumped to a 3-0 lead against the Capitals. The Islanders went on to defeat the Capitals, 5-3.

Defenseman Alexei Zhitnik has a three-game point streak and assist streak in progress with 0-4-4 totals.  Zhitnik, who is second on the team in scoring with six points (1+5), has recorded a point in five of seven games this season. He recorded his 400rd career point with an assist on Alexei Yashin's first period power play on Wednesday against the Rangers. Signed by the Islanders as a free agent on August 2, Zhitnik has 82 goals and 320 assists in 890 career NHL games. In seven games this season, he has recorded a goal and four assists.  Zhitnik has recorded four assists in the last five games. Zhitnik was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the fourth round (81st overall) of the 1991 Entry Draft.

Right wing Miroslav Satan has a goal in each of the last two games.  Satan has scored a goal in four of seven games this season.  He is tied for third on the team in scoring with five points (4+1).  Satan has recorded a point in five of seven games.

Left wing Mike York has a three-game point streak in progress with 1-2-3 totals.  York has record a point in four of seven games this season.  Overall, he has five points (1+4) in seven games.

No let downs tonight. 60 minutes of hard hitting hockey.
