3/23/2006 2:03:51 PM TORONTO (CP) - The National Hockey League suspended Pittsburgh Penguins defenceman Eric Cairns for three games Thursday after an incident during a game against Ottawa. Cairns was assessed a game misconduct at the end of the second period during last Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Senators. Cairns and Ottawa's Zdeno Chara exchanged punches after Cairns speared the hulking defenceman. Cairns was also assessed a spearing major, a fighting major and a misconduct. Chara was given a fighting major and a misconduct. Cairns will forfeit $9,015.30 US in salary. He will be eligible to return to the lineup March 31 against the New York Islanders. ******************************* The Eastern Conference leading Ottawa Senators will be without one of their top defenceman when they take to the ice this weekend. Zdeno Chara hurt his hand in a fight with Eric Cairns on Tuesday and will not make the Senators road trip to Buffalo for Friday's game, or Philadelphia for Saturday's contest versus the Flyers. Things turned ugly at the end of the second period of Tuesday's game as a number of Penguins and Senators players converged between the two benches. The crowd culminated with Chara and Cairns exchanging punches after Cairns apparently speared the Ottawa defenceman. On Thursday, the league announced that Cairns was suspended for three games without pay for his role in the fight. "Things just heated up at the end of the period and I wanted to stick up for my teammates,'' Chara said after the game. "Cairns got on the ice and we exchanged a few words and I got speared twice. That's why I reacted the way I reacted." |
