The Flyers were working the Rangers over pretty good the other night, and Hollweg took it upon himself to throw one of the dirtiest hits I have ever seen.

The hit reminds me of what Troy Mallette did to Jeff Norton.

He'll be back for the game against us on Wed.
The kid has bad hockey sense and poor discipline, but he does LOVE to throw the body.

The Rangers are going to regret trading away Nieminen and holding onto this guy come playoff time. Nieminen is a big time player with better hockey sense.

1st round exit for the Broadway Blue Skirts.

I thought they had let go of Ville because Blair Betts came back from his injuries. Both him and Hollweg are hitters, but I have to agree, eventhough Ville in my book is a dirty player, he is more imposing then either one right now.

But I'm sure, you're correct.

It was game 4 of the 1990 playoffs I think, my first year of having season tickets, and Mallette lined up a defensemen we had named Jeff Norton. Norton looked like he was unconsious and then started to freak out on the ice, they tried to put something in his mouth I remember so he wouldn't roll his tongue back. It was really scary, but that was a malicious hit that I will never forget.

yes, Betts is the main reason but Renney was quoted as stating that Betts and Hollweg combined help fill the void left by Nieminen. When they traded for the 3rd rounder used to snap up Ozolinsh, I thought it was a great deal getting Ozolinsh, but come playoff time..they'll rely on 2 guys (Betts/Hollweg) with ZERO playoff game experience between them.
Ville is "dirty" but very smart and he proved he could play in the new NHL.

I also remember that Norton steam roll job by Troy. The Ranger fans loved it.
That was a sick boarding call.
Great reference FEG.
Wasn't that in OT and we got like a major powerplay and won in OT?
who scored?

We got a major PP yes, Brent put home the OT winner while Vanbiesbrouck flapped and flailed on the ice. Funny, I think Don Maloney got an assist on that goal. That was the only game we won in that series and yes I remember Rangers fans being happy about that hit. But that was a real dirty series, Vukota beat the snot out of Jeff Bloomeberg in game 1, Patty La got elbowed in the head by James Patrick and his head bounced off the ice like a rubber ball after Chris Nilan slammed into him from behind in that same game. And to top if off Arbour wanted to go at it with Neilson after game 3. Real, real bad series and for the most part the Rangers killed us, but they got theirs in the next round and that put a smile on my face that summer.

I really had wished though that the Isles hadn't made the playoffs that season, that was the year where the top 4 picks went on to have multiple 40 goal seasons and we drafted Scott Scissons.

hmm wish i coulda heard their commentators response to the hit.

"OH NO THAT WAS COMPLETELY CLEAN, THE REFS ARE OVERREACTING"

"YEA JD HOLLWEG WOULD NEVER DO A DIRTY HIT ANYWAY"

"GUESS WHAT? I JUST FOUND OUT THAT I HAVE COLON CANCER WHEN I PUT MY HEAD UP MY ASS"
"We're not in a bind at all," Burke said. "I'd say of the 29 teams, we don't talk to Edmonton, so of the 28 other teams, there's plenty of interest in making this predicament go away. I could hang up the phone and solve this."

The hit on Norton was the same series Patrick knocked out LaFontaine in Game 1. Then Baumgartner and Vukota went nuts at the end of game 1. Game 3 was the only game we won and Sutter scored on the PP in the second OT.
That was Roger Neilson's playoff style though. Let take out the other team. Legally or illegally.

As I don't like defending the Rangers, it was Arbour who actually started the dirty play. We were losing 2-1 in game 1 and he sends out Gary Nylund, Vukota and Baumgartner and Kenny is skating around like a bull ready to charge out of the gate. Remember Arbour got a $5,000 fine for doing that and Vukota got suspended.

The James Patrick hit on LaFontaine was clean.
Chris Nilan was backchecking through the neutral zone and interfered with LaFontaine who had the puck and forced Patty to put his head down as he was being upended.
Patrick finished a check and his shoulder got LaFontaine in the head.

Al Arbour, the Islanders and us fans were incensed of course.
Arbour being on the opposite side of the ice at ice level didn't have the benefit of a replay and only afterwards did the team see it was a legal hit.

Of course LaFontaine suffered a concussion and the Ranger fans rocked the Ambulance carrying LaFontaine out of the Garden.

True FEG but you know Arbour and Neilson had a history going back to the Toronto series in 78 when they tried to take out Bossy and in the 82 finals against Vancouver. Vancouver knew they couldn't match up talent wise and they gooned it up for the whole series. Then, Patrick takes a run at Lafontaine and knocks him out in game 1. Borderline dirty hit and I'm sure Arbour had enough.

I forgot to mention the ambulance rocking episode, how could anyone forget that. That is something I have heard Rangers fans deny, but it was in the paper and they talked about it in commentary.

I don't think Patrick's check was clean, Nilan was shadowing him and Patty had a step on Patrick, so Patrick lunges at him with the shoulder and catches him with the elbow as he extends his arm out. I just remember how limp Pat went before he even hit the ice, as soon as Patrick made contact Patty was out cold and his head bouncing off the ice really looked bad.

Patrick just skated away, it isn't like when Mallette hit Norton even some Rangers were trying to help the training crew get on the ice and helped put him on that stretcher. Patrick just stood there, like an a-hole.

Good point, I forgot about that Toronto series. Freaking Ian Turnbull and the rest of those Harold Ballard Leafs.

Vanouver  Tiger Willams calling Bossy all sorts of derogatory names on the ice and my uncle being able to read his lips saying "this guy has a mother?" The Canucks had a player I wish had been an Islander and that was Darcy Rotta, what a fantastic hockey player he was.
