LOS ANGELES (CP) - The Los Angeles Kings have fired general manager Dave Taylor.

The move comes after the team finished second-last in the NHL's Pacific Division this season with a 42-35-5 record.

"I've known for a while," Taylor told The Canadian Press from Los Angeles. "I'm disappointed we're in this situation. But I'm also proud of what our staff has accomplished here the last nine years."

A source also said interim head coach John Torchetti and the rest of the coaching staff have been let go.

The Kings will officially make the announcement at a 4 p.m. ET news conference Tuesday.

In an effort to shake up his struggling team, Taylor fired head coach Andy Murray on March 22. But the Kings didn't respond, going 3-7-0 before winning two meaningless games to close out the regular season.

Taylor, who has one year left on his deal, hopes to stick with the Kings in some capacity. After a 17-season playing career, all spent with the Kings, he joined the team's front office in 1993-94 under former GM Sam McMaster. He then replaced McMaster as GM in 1997. Since then, the Kings have made the playoffs four times but only advanced past the first round once.

"We took over a 67-point team and in the last eight seasons averaged 85.5 points per year," said Taylor. "Our attendance is up. And on the business side, this will be our best year financially.

"So I'm still excited for the future of this organization, it's better positioned than it's ever been."

The Kings had high expectations coming into the season but were impacted by injuries to key players, including forwards Pavol Demitra and Alexander Frolov - both of whom were hurt at the Olympics.

"We've had more than 1,500 man games lost to injury in the last three seasons here," Taylor said. "It's absolutely staggering. For me, that's the most frustrating part. I think we're so close to being where we want to be. We're not that far."

Former San Jose Sharks GM Dean Lombardi is believed to be the leading candidate to succeed Taylor but the Kings will not announce a new GM at Tuesday's news conference. Lombardi has been a pro scout for the Philadelphia Flyers this season. He has also interviewed this year for the vacant GM jobs in Boston and Long Island.

Watch they will hire a new GM in a matter of days, while we take months.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!
