Not to be completely ignorant, but what exactly is the U-18 title, and what kind of signifance does it have? I'm guessing not much if no one noticed. |

2006 IIHF World Under-18 Championship April 22, 2006 Team USA Wins Back-To-Back IIHF World Under-18 World Championship U.S. Tops Finland 3-1 in Gold Medal Game ÄNGELHOLM, Sweden -- The U.S. National Under-18 Team topped Finland tonight 3-1 to win the gold medal at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship. Finland opened the scoring late in the first period when Joonas Kemppainen pushed in a loose puck underneath the U.S. netminder Joe Palmer (Yorkville, N.Y.) to give Team Finland the 1-0 advantage. Team USA struck back 5:34 into the second period when Rhett Rakhshani (Huntington Beach, Calif.) notched his fifth goal of the tournament when he buried a feed from Mike Ratchuk (Buffalo, N.Y.) and Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.). USA gained the 2-1 lead with less than a second remaining in the second stanza. Team USA was swarming the Finish net and Chris Summers (Milan, Mich.) slid the puck across the line as time expired to give Team USA the 2-1 advantage after two periods. In the third period, Erik Johnson (Bloomington, Minn.) was accessed a five minute penalty for checking to the head while Team USA was already short two men. The U.S. killed seven consecutive minutes of a Finish power-play with great saves from Palmer and a stingy U.S. defense. With seconds remaining in the game, Mike Carman (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored an empty-net goal to cap off the victory for Team USA. “Tonight was an unbelevievable experience,” said USA Head Coach John Hynes. “To watch a group of guys realize a dream they set into motion two years ago is really something special.” NOTES: It is the first time in USA Hockey history for a team to win back-to-back gold medals at the same event ... It is the first time a U.S. National Under-18 Team has won the gold medal with all of the players coming from the National Team Development Program ... USA netminder Joe Palmer earned Player of the Game for Team USA, the sixth different player for Team USA in as many games during the tournament ... Johnson, Jamie McBain (Faribault, Minn.) and Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament Team ... The IIHF World Under-18 Championship is a yearly event featuring the top 10 countries in the world. This year’s field includes: Russia, Germany, Belarus, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Sweden, Finland, Canada, and Norway. |

Center Ice televised the Bronze and Gold medal games via TSN, and they had a full 10 second part when Johnson got ejected of him f bombing the whole way to the lockerroom as TSN was late on the censor. U-18's are comprised of the kids who make up the upcoming draft class. Scouts sometimes get a better take on potential draft targets after the CHL playoffs and the U-18 tournament. And I noticed, because I dig the prospects and I did watch the whole Canada/Czech game and caught the last half on the USA/Finland game. |

Well according to this 6 page thread: http://hfboards.com/showthread.php?t=240379&page=1&pp=25 Perhaps more than "very few" people did watch. But I understand your point regarding most casual hockey fans and most Long Island resident Islanders fan, who have probably never even heard of the tournament before. |

I've had hockey fans ask me if there was a Team USA for anything but the olympics. I've also had supposed fans shocked to find out there was a women's team. But what can you do. |
