The Washington Capitals may not be in the playoffs but their future looks bright for two reasons.

The play of Alexander Ovechkin gives owner Ted Leonsis something to smile about and so does the financial picture.

According to the Washington Times, the Capitals are expected to reduce their financial losses by 75 per cent due in large part to a reduced payroll and new league-wide salary cap.

The Capitals averaged close to 14,000 fans this season, a drop of about 1,000 fans and team revenues dropped eight per cent. However, team payroll declined by more than $20 million and a revenue-sharing check is due from the league which means Leonsis expects to lose in the neighbourhood of $5 million this season.

"We're a young, growing team, and there are better days ahead," Leonsis told the Times. "Convincing fans of that has been the hard part."

The team lowered prices by more than 12 per cent before the season, while the average reduction was 7.5 percent in response to the lockout that canceled the 2004-05 season.

"Our prices are as low or lower than they were five years ago," Leonsis told the newspaper. "We have to build a good team and get pricing back in line with the rest of the league."

Glad to know the Isles kept that league average reduction down.

From your mouth to Wang's ears. You would think having the lowest attendance in the league would get him thinking, hey, I'm the only team in the tri-state area that didn't drop ticket prices. And as season ticket holders, we have a paltry 10% discount coming our way.

That's crap when I've been watching the New York Soundtigers play at the Coliseum for the last 2 months.

Will the Islanders be getting a revenue-sharing check ?

Hmmmm.....

Well... considering that the ticket pricing here is in line with the geography, I think we're not going to see any reduction other than the 10% we were offered.

HOWEVER.... I'm sure you are going to see the same $10 deals on some tickets and the continuation of the student and military discounts that were offered.

Truth be told, the NHL marketing machine will be doing more to try to attract the NEW fans with single game incentives than to lower their season prices. Let's remember, according to last year's numbers, this was one of the few teams who's season prices were up to 40% off face value. And the face value was in line with other similiar market teams. (based on geography, not on ice talent.)

"We're not in a bind at all," Burke said. "I'd say of the 29 teams, we don't talk to Edmonton, so of the 28 other teams, there's plenty of interest in making this predicament go away. I could hang up the phone and solve this."

I hear that. And let's not complain, because as soon as renovation time rolls around I'm sure ticket prices will soar, and we'll still only draw 10,000 a game in the "new" building.

Let's hope the prices don't soar. Remember, they're only going to add a full level of suites. With luck that should keep our prices in line with the rest of the tri-state area.

I'm just worried at how high up my seats will be then.

The money for the 300 million dollar upgrade has to come from somewhere.

Yes but getting rid of SMG should be a huge monkey off there backs. I too thought at first that ticket prices would soar after the renovations but many of the new arena's have good ticket prices. And with all the other things Wang is goign to have on the property he should be able to still make a profit by lowering or keeping prices level.
