STOP PICKING ON SPARKY!!!!! THE KIDS LOVE HIM AND HE HAS BEEN A REALLY GREAT INSPIRATION FOR THE TEAM. HE MAY BE MEANT TO BE THE MASCOT FOR THE DRAGONS, BUT HE'S A HELL OF A LOT BETTER THAN THAT STUPID NYLES FROM A FEW YEARS AGO. WHEN YOU LOOK AT SPARKY WITH SOME OF THE OTHER MASCOTS IN THE LEAGUE LIKE SAN JOSE'S SHARKIE, WASHINGTON'S SLAPSHOT, THE BLUE BEE FROM COLUMBUS, ETC, SPARKY REALLY WORKS WELL FOR US. THE ONLY OTHER MASCOT I CAN THINK OF WOULD BE MILBURY HANGING FROM A NOOSE. EITHER HIM OR ANY ONE OF THE RAGS PLAYERS!!!!! |

They're creepy & they're kooky, Mysterious & spooky, They're altogether ookie, The Ranger family! They live in a masoleum. If people come to see them, They'll run away to scream, The Ran-ger fam-i-ly! RAGS SUCK! | |

NYI Blog Box Blogger

I am another person who feels that they have turned the corner. I think that is why I get so annoyed when someone slams the Isles for all the fan-oriented stuff they try. They claim it's a "gimmick" to sell tickets. The geniuses fail to realize the main goal of professional sports - putting rear ends in seats. It honestly portrays these people as jealous that their own organizations are not doing half as much to make their team as accessible to fans. Couple that with the Blog Box, the charities, Isles TV, Pick and Win, ect - and you really get a feel for what they want to do. I love everything about this team, I am a season ticket holder and dare I say it a "super fan". Am I still a bit scorned from years past - heck yea. But it gets easier to forget as each year like this one passes.

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs
|
On an emotional or subjective level, I'd say, yeah, it does feel like we're turning the corner and getting some good bounces . . . stealing our way into the playoffs, surprising the experts this year, blending the new guys into the tradition, and so forth. On the pesky, rational level, I have to say I'm still very concerned that the team is drifting from year to year on a "build for today" philosophy that leaves us with very little of a real core and not much in the way of future prospects. We gotta build some depth, grow our own players, and most importantly win a few @#$! playoff series before I can say that the good ship Islander has been fully righted and is on its way to Cupsville. |

I agree with many that say we turned the corner as an organization, except we haven't turned THE CORNER, we have turned A corner. Here is why I say this. I think with the system, talent and coach we have, the isles will finish no worse than 5th in the east. I do not think Buffalo, Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Tampa, Atlanta, Florida, Crapitals, NJ, or Philly will finish above us. I think you will have the three division winners (which we could be one of) and then the Atlantic will get the 4th and 5th spots in the east as well. JMO. However, to turn THE CORNER, the Islanders have to do something about the draft. The Islanders have not had an above average draft in over a decade. When you look at who comes through our system and contributes to our team, this is worriesome to me. We have 10 million under the cap right now, but look at how many players are in the walk years of their deals- Hunter, Comrie, Tank, Sillinger, Berard and others either are in their last year or signed one year deals. There are no guarantees they will come back. Of course, I hope they do, but Comrie said he came here to prove he was a first line center and then test the market. I'm not clobbering these guys. it is a business, but I look in Bridgeport and wonder who is going to step up to the Isles in 2-3 years when Guerin, Silly, Witt, Berard are either done or in the twilight. We will know if the Islanders have truly turned THE CORNER this July. Answer these two questions-- 1- Did we have a VERY GOOD draft? 2- Did we resign key FAs and/or land a big one? The answer to those two questions will tell you if we truly turned THE CORNER. Remember, there is always more than one corner to turn.

You've Just Been Served!

Great post and you absolutely 100% correct. Sillinger has another year beyond this one, though. Hopefully, by the time the Witt, Sillinger and Guerin deals are over, the Bergies, Okposos, Campolis, Gervais and Tambellinis can take over and will have learned fromt he veterans. |

I think you'll have to lock up Billy long term. Even though he may decline in talent from here on out, you need what he brings as far as chemistry is concerned. Its been said numerous times that him being captain changed a lot of the BS that went on in the locker room in years past. I would also say that you need comrie for the next 2-3 years until we have someone internally to take his spot. Tank, Silly, hunter, Witt, berard are people you'd like to see stay, but we'll need a top flight guy and someone will have to get bounced out of the group just for salary purposes. I think its important to realize that going out and getting a top flight guy may not work here. Nolan has a system, and chemistry is a huge part of that system. prima donnas don't do well here and really aren't welcome (Yashin). we'd need a top flight NOLAN guy. oh and a top defensive defenseman. Someone who could teach people like MAB, Bruno, Campy et. al. the finer points of playing the position that mentor type person would help a ton too. |
