right now the Flyers are crying about Potvin's goal. They wanted a high stick. In today's game...yep, but it wasn't above the shoulder so in 1980 no high stick BTW...Fat Quinn was the coach of the Flyers and before the game he said to the canadian boradcasters that theIslanders "get tight in big spots and have never won a big game"...funny, Fat Quinn has never won a cup as a head coach |

What's weird about Quinn is when he turned up that season after he lost the weight... Fat Quinn or Pat Thinn? Weird.

Most of us recall the sequence that led to the OT goal with the puck at center ice, with Henning about to handle it. If you look for a longer sequences, however, you'll notice that tough forechecking set up the goal, because the Flyers were just trying to get the puck out of the zone. Nystrom in particular was slamming people that day. The other thing you get from these tapes is how good Trottier was with the puck. Long before 99 came along, I remember how well Trotts operated from behind the net, and his economy of motion. Finally, you begin to appreciate that Denis Potvin was one of the great two-way defenders of all time. |

great points. the biggest difference was the speed of the game thanks to the diff in conditioning/weight of equipment, especially goalie skates/pads etc.. this gave the more skilled players more time to make a play which in-turn created more offense as they had a distinct advantage. |

Got it TiVo'd... Great commentary at the end of the 2nd period when Nystrom scores his first. "Bob Nystrom, whom probably just scored the biggest goal of his career..."

Nystrom did not play that much in regulation time. He had 18 minutes in penalties that game. He had a fight or two and had two minor penalties to boot. He would have had two gordie howe hat tricks if he had any assists in that game considering he scored twice and had two fights. Arbour said that is why he played so many shifts in OT...he was fresher than everyone else because he spent nearly a period in the penalty box.
