By upside I mean his speed and his shot......he has both and he is a D-man....And he is still young.....All I'm asking for is give Nolan and staff some time with him...The guy has not even had a full year here....I think confidence goes a long way to making smart decisions on the ice....I'm just asking people to take a step back and wait a bit....I've watched the Islanders for years give guys away because they did not develop fast enough only to see them flourish under a better coaching staff, and system ....Now we have a great staff, with the right players....allow him some time to develop with both.....Sutton is a great player to team him up with.....just give him some time....I understand the complaints, I see what your saying....the only difference is I see a player who could be worth keeping given the right guidence.  -Brafft

isn't this his second team...how much time does he need to fully comprhend DEFENSE?

3POTI ranger fans were saying the same thing about Tom Poti when we signed him. And again MAB might have more upside.....

more upside...where are they then?

I'm more than willing to be patient with mab. But if the he is going to stay on this team any longer, than the Islanders need to trade for another reliable dman. Someone who mab can learn from, as mentioned in other peoples posts.

Why do we need to trade for another defensemen? MAB is the 7th man in the rotation which means he only plays when someone is hurt? Who do you expect to have at the 7th spot in the rotation???

I think your expectations are unrealistic. The idea that you are going to have some defensive stud as your 7th dman is just not going to happen...not in the era of expansion.

MAB has upside and has played less than 40 games as an Islander. A good point was made about Poti. He revived himself on LI under Nolan. Prior to coming here, the Rags were so fed up with him that they didn't try to resign him and he had been in the league for several years.

The truth is, you aren't willing to be patient with MAB, and that's fine. It is your perrogative. However, that doesn't mean we have to agree with you and it doesn't mean we can't tell you that we think getting rid of him now would be rash and a mistake (and you're free to tell us we are wrong- the beauty of these boards). It would be a Milbury-esque move at best.

Why do we need to trade for another defensemen?

We don't. Kind of. I would be all for keeping MAB as a 7th guy. And maybe one day finding someone who can show him what to do with his body position wise and his stick for things other then shooting.

That being said, come trade deadline time, if we are in a position to make a run then we can move him for someone like a doug weight or rod brindamour (aka someone with playoff experience). If we're out of the hunt then we can move him for a draft pick or two or a couple of studs prospects. Worse case senario he sticks around when radek takes his yearly hiatus.

I'm not an MAB fan, and I don't see the magical mystical upside. But if other teams do, then by all means, lets relieve them of something more valuable to us then a 7th dman. And lets make sure we ship him somewhere out west, just in case.

How long do you wait for someone to develop good play? Poti is a poor example because he had an OFF year with the rangers, he was considered a good defensmen before the ranjerk debacle and he's a good defensmen now.

Bergeron was NEVER considered a good defenseman and was riding the pine continually until he wore out his welcome in Edmonton. Was he the main reason we made the playoffs last year? nope. Was he a reason why our powerplay got better last year? Sure. but he's a one-trick pony and once teams figured out that one trick, the powerplay suffered. With berard in there the powerplay got better. Now that MAB is running it our powerplay is down again.

Taking this wait and see approach with him is far different then with a goalie. Goalies take far longer to develop then forwards or defensmen. the isles keep DP because he plays well to begin with, and shows promise.

MAB plays poorly to begin with (remember he is a defenseman) and shows what? promise of a good shot?

He has problems turning over the puck, getting back into position, once in position keep forwards away from the front of the net, stick handling, getting off a shot, running a powerplay and breaking up a pass in the neutral zone.

Tell me again why we need to keep this project? He's been in the league for 6 freaking years! He's not going to develop good play all of a sudden. He's like Scott Lachance, eventually people are going to wake up and realize he sucks.

I couldn't agree more with this post. How many more defensive breakdowns is it going to take? Everybody just wants to ignore the fact that Edm gave him up for a minor leaguer!!! He was horrible defensively BEFORE he got here. He was horrible defensively last year and it's been even worse this season. This is by no means a knee jerk reaction.
The whole "he's a 7th dman" doesn't hold water because he's not paid like an extra dman. He makes a nice chuck of change to be a healthy scratch. Face it, Garth rolled the dice with this one and now it's gone bad. Hopefully, he corrects it by sending him down.
It just seems like nobody wants to say what needs to fixed with this team. I like the team and they work hard but things still need to be improved. It's not negative just honest. There has to be some honesty at some point. If we could upgrade players like Bates, MAB and Hilbert, the team would improve.

Thats a great point, Islander4Cups. With everyone healthy, Bergeron is now our 7th defenseman since Berard, Campoli, and Gervais have all proven more reliable than him. I'd bet there's plenty of teams that would love to have the offensive contributions that Bergeron can provide from their 7th guy. Who's the Rangers' 7th guy? Tomas Pok-check? Who do the Devils have? David Hale? (he's not even on the team anymore actually)

WWRD?

What would Radar do with MAB?

Sit him? Or give him a chance to shake the "goat" label?

I think it's the latter.

From Pat Flatley:

. . . [W]e were in Pittsburgh in the last minute of the game and I gave the puck away. You know, it's a privilege just to be out there the last minute of a game. But I tried to flick the puck up over a big defenseman's head. He managed to grab it and put it down. They scored. I'm just devastated and Al never says a word.

We're practicing in Philadelphia the next day and in my locker there's no practice sweater. I talked to Lorne Henning, the assistant coach, and he said, "Al is really mad." I went up to Jim Pickard, the equipment trainer, and I said, "I think somebody forgot to put a sweater up there for me. He said, "Al said you're not getting one."

They finally came out with a sweater and it was a color that no one else had. I asked Lorne, "What line am I on?" He said, "You're not on a line. Talk to the other right wings and see if they'll let you in so you can do the drills."

Now we don't play in Philly until the following night. So picture this: You have a whole day and a whole night of him playing mind games with you. And he doesn't look at you. You might as well not be on the team.

Well, the night of the game, Lorne tells me, "Al wants you to go out for the warmup." Then he tells me, "You're in." I was fully expecting to play on the fourth line, then Al says, "Boss and Trots. And Flats, you're on the left wing." I had never played left wing in my life, and here I am on the No. 1 line with Mike Bossy and Bryan Trottier.

It worked out fine. It was Al's way of saying, "What are you made of?" It was all about him preparing you for adversity.

Re: MAB, let's stick with this guy, he has the talent to be here, but he needs to work on the defensive game. He may always let up goals. It comes with his role. Improving his judgment on defense is what counts.

After 6 years if your still can't shake the goat label, rader would have had your butt shipped out. What year was flately in? 1st 2nd when that happened? its a rookie mistake. MAB is LONG past making rookie mistakes.

If I remember the article correctly, wasnt it also Flatley who debuted in practice and couldnt do a thing right. Missed shots, passes, falling down from the nerves, and when he passed Arbour said "I'm not really this bad" (or something to that effect) and Al said "I hope not becuase you wont be here very long".

It goes both ways. Flatley shaped up. Bergeron, the clocks ticking.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

who replaces him? FMIV or is Berard healthy enough to come back?

as much as I like Berard (I did stick to my guns and bought a berard jersey), I think pittsburgh may be too fast a team to come back and test out a weak groin on. I'd save him for the devils tomorrow night.

Nolan said if Beard is cleared by the doctors he would be playing....not so much cause MAB's bad defense but because they need a spark on the PP unit.

FMIV won't play for a while in my eyes...you'd need Berad/MAB and someone else needing a night off before that happens.

Nolan is pretty desperate to get the Power Play working again, so it'll be Berard if he's ready to go. I think if Berard is not ready (he says he's 100%, then it'll be MAB). I think the Fourth is plan C.
