Nolan said if Beard is cleared by the doctors he would be playing....not so much cause MAB's bad defense but because they need a spark on the PP unit.

Nolan might just be walking a fine line there trying to make the point without crushing MAB's confidence.

Oh totally agree Webby...I think Berard would have to play bad defensivly for a few games in a row to not be in the lineup....clearly he likes Berard over MAB but knows he might need MAB at some point so doesn't want to kill the young guys confidence. Nolan knows how to play the game well.

Mark Andre Bergeron and Berard should be paired up as Dmen

Healthy scratch tonight, that is #3 this season.

Here's the bottom line:
(I'm trying to be as neutral as I can)

Observations:
-MAB was never suppossed to be our #1 or 2. He was slated to be 4th-5th and a PP specialist.
-He's our 7th d-man this year because Berard/Campoli/Gervais have outplayed him. At the begining of the year nobody thought he was out 7th d-man.
-At over a million in salary he's our 3rd highest paid d-man, yet he's been a healthy scratch several times already.
-It seems Nolan will keep either Berard OR MAB in the lineup, but not both at the same time. I think Berard's play made him expendable. BB just plays an all round better game, while still contributing on the PP.

-Something has to be done with MAB. He's too valuable to be a healthy scratch, but I wouldn't take any of our regulars out of the lineup to put him in. I say trade him after a bit. Many here think we should hold onto him in case of injuries. Good point (especially with the likes of Berard and Marty), but I think Meyer is capable of filling in, as well as Johnson when he returns. We have a surplus of d-men, why not get something in return for our healthy scratch.

"Ted Nolan" type player
^^ Fantastic post, and to expand on your last post for a bit. A seventh d-man should be able to come in and play basiclakky a rounded game, with an emphasis on worrying about keeping the puck out of our net for the 10 minutes they are on the ice. Your extra fill in defensman should not be a PP specialist who cant play defense.

If martinek, sutton or witt went down, i would be much more comftorbale knowing that meyer, johnson, or even spiller can come in and be a downgrade of the same player for a few minutes again. I do not want to lose a defensive presence in the lineup and have him replaced with Marc Andre Bergeron (or as the newsday blog is now calling him Moron At Blueline).

Let's just not be hasty, we're not going to have 8 HEALTHY defenseman all season. I'd keep all my NHL ready defenseman unless something terrific came along.

Right On Time.
A great point is the whole fill in or well rounded guy for injuries.

The more MAB sits the harder it is to get in a groove and when he plays he is still our NUMBER ONE D- Man with the puck. He is not the "pinch hitter" type at all. I think he has more skill than Aaron Johnson or what not, but him plugging in would be better for the team.

A QB of your PP, number one offensive D-Man can not just come in once and a while or sit and sit. We are probably one of the only teams that has our no 1 offensive D-Man that can't crack the top 6. I ACTUALLY agree with it, but I just don't think he is the "pinch hitter" or fit in type. PP needs rhythm, timing etc.

Also if his D is to truly get better, waiting for an injury will not help.

I think it is an all or nothing only for those reasons. We go with him or we try and get a player that will help (He won't be as talented but can fill a better role) or save some more money and gear up for a big player.

I also wouldn't be shocked if he goes somewhere and plays well, but with our team and our system and our D- Men and our 1 goal games, he just doesn't fit in.

ONE GOAL games hinge on some crucial things, he is not the guy I would want out there in third period of those games (I do admit/know it is a tad harsh and he has skills though).

I thought the same thing BUT every time Berard has been healthy he has played. He has not been a healthy scratch, I just think that happened with him getting here late and being hurt.

Really, we can talk about this guy until we're out of breath. The only guy who's opinion counts is Nolans and he seems to have had about enough. Healthy scratch again and Berard's back. MAB's games and ice time when he plays will be minimal.

Now he may get another chance, but I think one more glaring screw up and that will be it.

Y'know, it was two weeks ago that everyone was delighted because we pulled out a come-from-behind win against the Pens on Al Arbour night. You all remember Miro slamming home a rebound to win the game, right?

Well, a crappy performance last week and everyone seems ready to dump the guy who took the shot---no, it wasn't blocked---and got the first assist on Miro's insipirational goal, yes, our friend, MARC ANDRE BERGERON. Let's give the guy a break.

PS Are we allowed to use this icon :deadhorse: and then add five sentences?? Oh well, congrats Rifle on 800 posts!
