"No. 16 was serving a double-minor for being near Andy Sutton when the defenseman fell down." Please. A 6'6 defenseman isn't going to fall down near a 5'4 chipmunk unless the chipmunk is breaking the rules. |

Was Just about to quote that last line. Man, just when i thought he was becoming less of a douchebag in his columns.... The man's a piece of work. EDIT: Heck, even the MSG announcers saw the play.... Explain to me this larry, do you think sutton got himself cut (and thus the DOUBLE minor) just by falling down himself? |

Brooks is a fine writer, but something of a toadying front runner as well. I'll give him this---he justifiably fawned over the Islanders back in the good old days, and he correctly criticized the franchise for many of its missteps in the decade that followed. Unfortunately, in more recent years, he has added a bit of sneering to the criticism, which is why he gets knocked for yellow journalism. Also, Brooks's column is pretty meager as far as news goes. The Isles have a contract dispute with a former GM who didn't sign a contract. They are under no legal obligation to settle with him, and the lack of a settlement in the dispute is equally attributable to Smith. |

It has to be awfully difficult to type a column with Mark Messyfaces jock in one hand, Avery's bannana in the other and Tom Renney's underwear over his face. Al Trautwig was a dick again last night, as usual. You can see he loathes giving the Isles any credit whatsoever. The hell with both of them, they are Rags homers. Nothing more, nothing less. And they are irrelevant. |

(Taking my Islanders blinders off) I do NOT blame Avery for keeping his stick up high as he approached Sutton given their history. The fact of the matter was Sutton went in high and led with a forearm and in doing so caught the tip of Avery's stick blade. This is NOTHING different than what Potvin, Trotts, Messier, Howe or any hall of famer or old time hockey player does. The bottom line is, he high sticked Sutton and Sutton missed on his forearm/elbow. The penalty was justified. (Putting my beautiful Islanders blinders back on) The Rangers and Sean Avery suck.

Sutton didnt actually lead with his elbow, his elbow came up as he reached for his face after being hit with Avery's stick, although i must admit it did look like the high stick was unintentional he still needs to control it. |

I disagree, Sutton was going upright and he towers over Avery, he was going to try and nail him up high, you generate your power from your legs and he was straightening up just before contact. That Avery high stick was both intentional and unintentional. Why? it's a safety precaution. Just as Messy threw a cross check into the face of Doug Gilmour against the Devils because he was about to check Messy-Gay back in the 97 playoffs. |

Who even cares about Larry Brooks? He writes for the New York Post, the biggest piece of tabloid trash on the newspaper stand. That paper would be put ot better use in a bathroom stall. |

On a similar subject I just read an article by Mark Hermann praising Sean Avery. I couldn't stop myself, so I sent him a reply. Not mean, but definitely my opinion. He basically talks about what a great gift to hockey this a$$hole is. If he has the guts to reply I'll post the e-mail. |

yeah, but if someone is coming at you and you throw your hands up in self defense, thus poking them in the eye, is it intentional or unintentional. little bit of both yes? |

It's a gutless move either way. Take the hit like a man, or do whatever you can to dodge the crap out of it. Don't throw your stick up like a sissy. |

Then, I'm sure we will all be looking forward to Larry Brooks article taking Dolan and Isaih Thomas to task for firing Larry Brown and then not paying him the rest of the money in his SIGNED CONTRACT?????? Brooks can't have it both ways. He wants to criticize Wang (and rightfully so) for not paying Smith or getting the issue resolved, but Dolan is running Sodom over there and Larry is awfully tight lipped about it. If he's going to be a COLUMNIST and therefore express his opinions, then what is his opinion on Dolan? Or is he afriad he will lose access? |

This is classic Brooks. In his zeal to defend a Rags POS like Avery, Brooks displays his lack of knowledge of the rules. IT DOESN'T MATTER IF THE HIGH STICK TO SUTTON WAS INTENTIONAL OR NOT. Players are responsible for where their stick goes. Referees don't look at intent unless they want to pull in the "intent to injure" penalty. A high stick is a high stick whether Avery meant it or not. And the idea that AVery got a penatly because Sutton "fell down" is a joke. You don't get a 4 minute double minor because "gravity worked" on Sutton. You get it because your stick blade cut Sutton and drew blood. Brooks obviously either doesn't know the rules of hockey or chooses to ignore them when they dont' fit his ideas. Yes, Avery came out in full agitator mode last night and even suckered DP into taking a 2 minute penalty. However, he cost his own team 3 minor penalties in the process. There is a difference between agitating and losing control of yourself. Guess which one Avery did. BTW...where is Brooks to cry about the BS boarding call Bergenheim received? And that move by Avery where he pulled Tank over from behind should be suspendable. Did you see how Tank was bent over his own knee? Lucky he didn't blow out his knee. Typically BS move from a player who only likes to go at you from behind. |
