I have to admit that I wasn't impressed when Vasicek was signed this summer. At that time we had lost Blake, Smtyh, Kozlov. I think we had "replaced" them with the likes os Fedotenko and Sim. I thought Vasciedk like the 2 other then recent signings would be a 3rd liner, at best. Here he is leading our team in goals with 9. I would have thought it would have taken him all season to get that many. Glad to be wrong about this one...congrats Jo. |

He's everything Kvasha wasn't. Taking the puck coast to coast. Sticking up for Miro and punching Rangers Enforcer Colton Orr in the mouth. Killing penalites. 2 shorty's... im a fan |

Being an islander fan here in north carolina, let me say im shocked (pleasantly ) at Big Joe's performance so far. He was no where near this good on the Canes. And i hope he can keep it up. If he does, we'll be in tremendous shape. |

My question with Vas is........is he motivated simply by having a one year contract? Or would you lock him up now long term? Or would you wait? Interesting questions to ponder. |

I must admit after 5 games or so, I thought he slow and not very good. Man, was I wrong about him. He battles alot more than I thought he did. Where would we be without him right now. Locking up long term is a tough ? because he could be onto a career year and looking to cash in. Is it Nolan getting him to play to his potential or if he on a mission to get a long term payday. If there are any big time Centers next summer available in free agency, Id love to get one of them to come here and move Comrie to no. 2. With Silly at 3 for another year, Vasicek would have to be a 4th and will be costly at his current pace. It will be interesting to see what happens. |

Yes, he could be the Slovakian Mark Lawrence. Then again, he could be the Slovakian Olli Jokinen. (Quiet, all you folks out there who say there's no difference between the two. :D) That's why I'd like to sign him now, before his market value is as clearly established. There's a risk we'll overpay, but unlike Lawrence, I think Vasicek's worth the money just as a third liner at worst, and there's a risk that we won't be able to afford him at the rate he's producing right now (see Poti, Tom; Kozlov, Viktor). I know, it's nice that we keep finding fresh players to have career years, but that's a dangerous business model for building the franchise. Joe's a good one, let's lock him in at a reasonable rate. |

Its a catch 22. If he goes on to have a 35, 40 goal type year....and I know its early, then clearly his price will skyrocket and he won't be back. But let's hope both those things happen. I'm tired of letting our more talented players get away and not return. |

Some from the Hurricanes Booster Club that I know... You will get some on one side of the fence, and the rest on the other. I guess I deal with the Joe Appreciation society. one in particular, that has a 63 carolina jersey - is getting a 63 Islander jersey now... |

I think my favorite thing about Vas is the way he skates. You forget that he's so big at 6'5" because he can skate like Paul Kariya. It's a beautiful thing watching him take the puck in the Islanders zone and skate it all the way up. Go Joe!!! |

He is playing with confidence and it is showing. What he shoots it goes in and he has a mean streak that shows from time to time. Change of scenery, Billy Guerin as the captain, Nolan as the coach and a team with very good chemistry all have something to do with it, IMO. He has been a very bright spot for us and I see no signs of it being a flash in the pan. He has an expanded role here and is playing his heart out. Good for him and us and keep it going Vasi- you're looking great... |

Ted Nolan: Motivating and extracting the most talent out of players. Serving the Islanders since 2006. Who would've thought Blake scoring 40? Now Vasicek scoring 25 or more? I guess Yashin has the anti-Nolan gene. |

Webb, I couldn't agree more. I remember an early interview Teddy gave where he was asked what kind of system he would make his players follow. And I remember his answer: I will NOT make my players play my system. I will devise a system that plays to their strenghts, then let them play their games. He is the perfect fit for this team. And I also believe that Captain Billy has a lot to do with how we carry ourselves. Consumate professional that motivates those around him. There is something special about this team.... |

Don't forget that he was battling injury problems before and that likely contributed to his struggles elsewhere. That maybe the biggest difference for him between this year and other years. |

Until his knee injury, Yashin was having one of his best seasons as an Islander, and that shows that Nolan was able to get through to even him for at least a little while. Now we've got the right type of players though who will thrive under Nolan. |

Don't overestimate the fact that he was coming off a knee injury last year in Carolina and those ACL/MCL injuries usually take a full 1-1.5 years of rehab before you are 100%. Right about now would be the end of that time frame. |
