He doesn't turn down a Hossa if the offer's on the table. He using what he has, in this mold and he's relatively successful with it. But he knows how the game is played. Has he actually said he doesn't want a scorer? |

We've all watched Islander teams who couldn't win faceoffs at crucial times. Mike isn't perfect, but he's a hell of a lot better than what we used to see on the draws. |

I don't think he has lost everything quite yet. Just be patient, folks. 82 games makes for a long season and we will need contributions from everyone. Sillinger has started slow, but again I think the same could have been said last year. Hunter, Hilbert and Sillinger weren't together until January where they turned it on for the rest of the season. I hope we see more from him and the rest as well (Guerin, Bergie, etc.). |

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs
|
Too true. This team wasn't designed to clinch the playoffs early. Personally, I believe the the team was designed to give the fans a respectable, entertaining product while Wang and Reckson try to lock down a new arena deal. Aside from March and April 2007, that has been the real goal of the franchise for quite a few years. Not the Cup, just a new home. I'm not happy about it, but I think it's the truth, and I can understand Wang's priorities given the amount of money he's spending. In my opinion, to build a really successful squad with a balanced and focused offense, either we spend a lot more money and get back to the cap by signing a few front-tier players, or we rebuild by grinding our way through a few fairly bad seasons. Right now I see no indication that our hockey ops people are looking at either of these options. Hence we have a lot of one-goal games in our future. Hopefully. |

They're building a foundation. establishing an image. An image of hard work and through the draft, players in the system and via free agency and trades they hope to have a winner sooner rather than later. We've been patient in the past, but we need to continue to be. This is a new regime all around. The "hockey ops" people can only do so much when top tier free agents DON'T want to come here. That's why the foundation is being set and after respectability is back, that's when everything else, hopefully falls into place.

Actually, I disagree, TP. Guerin, other than 1 game has not performed upto his capabilities. Neither has Bergie - he only has one goal. Also, don't forget that our D hasn't really contributed any offense on a consistent basis. From Berard, Campoli and Gervais, I would think they each have close to 10 goals. Also, is it just me or does Hilbert look like a new player since Saturday's game? Even before his goal, he was making good shots and looked confident with the puck. Maybe he can chip in 10 goals. |

perhaps not 10 goals each, but I would have figured all three to have a few more points then they do. Especially Berard, only having the 5 points he has, but because of injury and lack of production on the PP (by the forwards) its not hard to see why those three don't have the point production they should have. |

Bergie will be a good player, but it takes time. He's been out of the NHL a full season and only played a handfull of games before his contract dispute. Give him a little time. The effort has been there. This team does need a sniper. No doubt. Unfortunately, the only way we get one is at the trade deadline if we are in playoff position. And even then, there most likely will be no contact commitment. Hopefully we wont see another cryin' Smyth debicle.. |

silly got old overnight it seems.. lets face it we all knew this team wasnt gunna be a scoring machine.. the only way we are gunna win is on defense and goaltending.. 2-1 games... 3-2 games... thats our only shot... franchise players dont grow on trees... not since the 70s for us anyhow... we need a franchise player in here.. like a kovalchuk or ovechkin... we havent had that since palffy if u wanna even call him a franchise guy.... |

A defensively responsible team with stable management and a well-respected coach is crucial, and I really like the progress that we've made in that direction. However, only the elite teams win the Cup, and you gotta have the horses to win. We have practically no horses, except in goal. I see maybe 3-4 guys on this team who could be on an Islanders Cup winner in future years. DP, Gervais, Campoli, and Hunter. Perhaps there's one more on the farm? Unless we steal some good kids (picture the Ryan Smyth deal in reverse) or develop some diamonds in the rough, or somehow become vastly more attractive to free agent franchise forwards aged 27-29, we are going to have to rebuild for awhile on the foundation being established today. That's fine by me, I'll support the team through thick and thin, but I'm guessing Charles Wang isn't looking to make that kind of investment until he has a greater prospect of return on investment in his future. |

The title of this topic should be.....Where is Billy Guerin?....lolol The man is a goal scoring beast. We saw that against Washington already. I'd defintly like to see him play a little more of an offensive role and maybe help us break out of a scoring slump that we seem to be encountering. Maybe we need to shift up the lines a little bit. Hilbert - Sillinger - Hunter <----keep them together, they were a great thing last year and have shown they still have a good chemistry. They'll wake up eventually. Fedotanko - Vasicek - Guerin < --- maybe by putting Guerin with a guy who can power foward like vasicek, he can be more involved offensively and make things happ Bergenheim - Comrie - Satan < -- Putting Comrie with Bergenheim can only help him because Bergenheim has the speed that neither Guerin or Fedotanko has Simon - Bates - Park |

Here is your answer..... guys have to go to the net. It is just that simple. We have not been going to the net the last 11 games the way we did in the beginning of the season. Whenever we crash the net, good things happen. After that ridiculous scheduling snafu where we had a lunar calandar off from games, the Isles stopped going hard to the goal. We need to get guys down low and at the net. We've not only settled for too much perimeter stuff on the PP, but we've done it at even strength as well. Here's to crashing the net boys!!!! Get back to it. |

I hate to keep coming back to this but when you have trouble scoring goals as a team, you cannot afford to play guys who are going to score 8 goals or less unless they are fourth liners. If guys like that are playing on your top 3 lines, you'd better have some snipers or great playmakers. We don't have that. We need goals by committee and our "committee" of goal scorers is a small one. I don't know where we are gonna get a 30-40 goal guy from but we need one. Can't score 2 goals a game and expect to make the playoffs. |

Snow.....your take on Hilbert is you can't afford to play guys who socre 8 goals or less unless they're on the 4th line.....but what about the goals he helps prevent by his solid defensive play? That gets overlooked all the time. |
