Nope not at all. Okposo stays.

You have to be patient and give players this age lots of time.

We already dealt two number one draft choices and a number one pick last year in the Smyth deal. We can not have a practice of doing that all the time.

so lets say by the trade deadline the Capitals are out of the playoffs and Oveckin will not sign and demands a trade. Garth goes ahead and trades 2 first round drafts picks and Okposo to the Capitals on the notion Ovy will sign a long term contract with us.

Do you do it?

i say Yes...Ovy is worth the money, and exciting player to watch.

I would not agree trading Okposo for a shot in the dark . I am just bringing this up as i brought it up a couple other boards. and would like to see some thoughts

Nope. I keep okoposo.

1. Ovi, not a Nolan guy (just a hunch)
2. Salary cap. we can't take his salary on without sacrificing the ability to get a name player in here who is a nolan guy.

Kyle is gonna jump straight from College to the pros. He's the only player shining on his team and in the NCAA. He said how he's gonna make the jump when he feels he can go straight to the NHL.
He's playing great hockey now. He needed to find his legs the first couple of games, now hes moving.

Right On Time.
I would like to see what he has for now BUT a guy like Ovechkin is a WHOLE different world.

I don't know anyone in their right mind that would NOT trade a "PROSPECT" for Alexander. I am not talking about for Richard Zednik. Obviously a top 10 NHL player you do in a heart beat. Kovalchuck, Ovechkin, Thorton etc (just throwing out names). Snow would carry Kyle on his back and walk him to Washington.

NOW for a second tier guy that is a different story. Whats the chance of him being better than a 60 goal scorer or league MVP?

Few other notes from this thread.

Salary Cap? We have a ton of money, we can spend it. If you can get a TOP 10 NHL player and top 2 power forward you do it. I mean if Oposko ever becomes "Great Eight" or an Illya ( I am sure we would all take that) he is going to get huge dollars. Let's not be EXTRA EXTRA cheap. I am in favor of not throwing 7 million for Gomez, but I am in favor of always getting a true scorer in his prime and the money will be well deserved (I want HOSSA!).

People are saying he will be no more than a second liner. How many times have you seen him play? How do you know his work ethic or what team he is on etc. Almost all prospects are over-hyped. Prospects are always very tough to tell, but certain guys stand out and it is not a COIN flip with guys. It was no accident that Crosby, Ovehckin, Malkin, Kovalchuck etc all go real early in the first round. Very hard for any player to live up to the hype, but even a strong second line player is solid. Not many teams have 95 point guys in their minors.

Confidence is something talked about in sports 1000 times over. I think it is talked about too frequently but it carries some weight for sure. Another year of seasoning AND even more important another year to get stronger is huge. The physical toll and mental toll is a lot, getting on a weight lifting training program for an extra 12-24 months will only help.

Home grown players are what teams strive for. From money, to being groomed THIER way (It is why in MLB teams would rather draft a HS player and develop him THIER way, of course not every time but that is choice), to the fans etc.

One last note, with many of the guys under a 1 or 2 year deal or a few key guys being older (Sillinger, Guerin) youth will be key. We will have a all star caliber goalie in his true prime, will have some good pieces around a few sparks of strong youth would/will go a long way.

Looks like he is playing a little better bt the -8 is a very loud stat. Still not dominating, not that i expected him to but i did hope. I am begining to temper my outlook from Pretty good player, to above average (in NHL terms i mean).

Haven't we tried that formula about 6,000 times over the last ten years and basically have squat to show for it?

yes and for the wrong players

Ovy is not Yashin at all, he is young and ready go. I say give up the 4 draft picks because I do not know but our farm system is very weak from some drafts and if we are picking 13 and up for the next two years. So we have better chance of taking Ovy than drafting that type of player because we not going to be low in the draft for at least the next two years

Okposo=2nd line player at most

so you're saying Okposo (the guy you claim to be a 2nd liner at best) and a pair of 1st rounders (something of completely unknown value) will net us a one of the premier players in the league in Ovechkin? Really?

all the Craps have to do is take him to arbitration and they won't have to worry about teams trying to offer sheet him.. he'll be a Crapital until he becomes a UFA.

now if you want a more realistic scenario i wouldn't mind putting Okposo in a package that could land us Brad Richards. huge contract yes, but he's 27 and a legit 1st line center whose locked up for the next 5 years (i think).. on top of that he's a very good player in all 3 zones.

for now though i'd rather hold on to our chips. ideally i'd like to see Okposo get a shot at the professional level before we start writing off his potential.
"We're not in a bind at all," Burke said. "I'd say of the 29 teams, we don't talk to Edmonton, so of the 28 other teams, there's plenty of interest in making this predicament go away. I could hang up the phone and solve this."

If we're going to trade every pick just because it's not going to produce a top line player, then maybe we should just adopt the 1982-83 St. Louis Blues strategy of liquidating the scouting staff and skipping the draft altogether. Saves all that airfare, for starters.

Oh well, just a thought.

I like Brad Richards a lot BUT he does play on the same squad as Vinnie and St. Louis. Sometimes going from the THIRD option to the first option on a team is a very very hard thing to do. He also plays in a more opened up system you know?

He is a winning player and he does more than score, but we do need a scorer scorer. I would like a guy who is his team number one or two and not with hall of famers to play with on the PP.

He also is basically a 23 goal scorer. I mean he could come here and easily net 19, and that isn't what we need. As far a player oh he is great but he is a career -37 and makes big bucks.

I think we need more of a Rick Nash, Eric Staal. Score anywhere, any time type of sniper. One guy who I would love and try to steal is Michael Cammalleri. Guy can score.

If anyone in the league is a "ted Nolan Guy," it's Ovie. Living down here I have the pleasure of seeing him on the ice all the time.. the guy gives it his all every shift, hits anything that moves, and without him, the Capitals have maybe 4 wins this year.

He plays harder than anyone I have ever seen, and I have never seen him take a shift off.

He doesn't sulk at all, and has a heart of gold in regards to charity and kids...

If George McPhee was dumb enough to offer Ovechkin for Okposo and 2 First Round Picks, it would be silly to think twice about that... that deal would make up for any Milbury craptastic deal to date.

Just to jump off topic real quick but this was posted on another board about Ovy.

My name is Shanna Westbrook and I'm a Buffalo Sabres fan. I live in the DC area though and am actually a Buffalo transplant. My husband is from DC and is a HUGE Caps fan. And through his affection for the Caps, he managed to turn my 7-year old daughter into a Caps fan as well. She loves Alex Ovechkin. My son, Parker, however is a Sabres fan like me. Anyway, we were in attendance at last nights Sabres-Capitals game and were lucky enough to meet Alex after the game. Well, under the circumstances, lucky isnt the correct word. Let me explain.
My daughter Lindsay was diagnosed not too long ago with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. It was ridiculously hard news to take since we never saw that particular diagnosis coming. Both of my children play youth hockey and have for years. At first it didnt slow her down much at all but now, thanks mostly to chemotherapy and other meds, she's so tired and sick all the time that she just cant play anymore. So to make up for the loss of hockey in her life (and it's a shame because she was so good at it) my husband has been taking her to Capitals games, and when she's too sick to go, we all watch the games on TV and it lifts her spirits tremendously. And ours too.
Now to make a boringly long story a little shorter, I'll get right to my point. My husband's business partner has a friend in upper Caps management and he arranged for Lindsay (and us too) to meet with Alex after the game last night as a surprise to Lindsay. My husband made up this ridiculous story for her when she questioned why we were still at the arena when the game had ended, lol. She's a smart girl but she never saw this coming. But when Alex and some other guy(I'm not sure who he was, public relations maybe, but he was informing Alex about Lindsays cancer) walked in the room her little jaw dropped and she just stared at him. He came over to talk to her (he called her sweetheart) and she was just speechless. Then all of a sudden she just started bawling, a little overwhelmed maybe. And what Alex did next was totally unexpected. I moved over to go comfort her and hopefully get her to talk to him but Alex beat me to it. He sat down on a bench and set her on his lap and just held her in his arms. I couldnt believe it. At that point, I started crying as well, lol. After she calmed down, they just started having a conversation like they've been best friends for years. She told him about how she plays,or played rather, hockey and he gave her a few tips, lol. She told him about how she had a chemo treatment that morning and she wasnt feeling too well and he gave her another hug. Then he taught her how to say "I love you" in Russian. That was...interesting lol. They just talked back and forth for a while. A lot longer than I thought actually. And before he left and we went home he gave her an address and told her she could write to him anytime she wanted and he'd make sure he'd get it. I think it may have been a fan club address or something. I cant imagine it'd be his personal address. He even gave her a "special" nickname: Lulu, lol. I asked him why Lulu, and he said because he likes that name, lol. He's a funny guy. And even with his semi-broken english(it's getting much better though) it was just an unbelievable night. I just wanted everyone to know what an AMAZING guy we have here in Washington. I've never had an experience quite like that one.

Talking about draft picks...we know what Ovy is about...the draft we do not..Kyle will be on the team in the future but he is not future or savior

Kyle or a trade will not net us Ovy, i just brought up the topic but signing him to an offer sheet would be an option and we lose 4 picks..which i would not be worried about if it was ovy....dustin penner is a whole different story

Ovechkin not a Nolan-type player? Come on now, that takes the Nolan-type player thing way too far. If Ted Nolan can't make room for a 100-point scorer, than something's a tad amiss.

^^ Thanks for that story.

Made me almost cry. THAT is a class act and now will probably make me root for him (78 games year ha) for-ever. 5 - 10 minutes can go a long way. He obviously is an un-real hockey player (Top 3 Power Forward in hockey) and now that, that is great!

Thanks so much MJ16. As a 25 year old guy still shows how big the sports guys are.
