Supposedly the pregame fight between Avery and Tucker started because Avery made a crack to Blake about his cancer. As per Howard Berger.(from fan590 in Toronto) "A player from the rangers that wants to remain nameless, said that he wanted to strangle Avery for making a cancer remark to Blake. When Blake was asked about it, instead of making a comment he made a face/gesture that confirmed that a comment was made." |

If the players were allowed to police themselves then Avery would have less courage about making comments like this. Yeah, plaers are professional and can/should ignore him during the game but to do this during warmups with no chance for penalization and/or repercussions? Just confirms what a classless bum he is. If the instigator rule is removed, Avery will have tons to answer for. Classy move by Blakey to keep his tounge. |

Do you have a link for this please. If in fact Avery said this, that's absolutely disgusting, however, that is also quite an accusation. I looked on Howard Berger's blog and he mentioned no specifics. http://blog.rogersradiointernet.com/nothingbutleafs/ |

I did not want to post this before b/c it has not been official but every one in Toronto is up in arms about this as well as some players It goes that Shannahan was going to ring his neck, and talked to him before the game started. As well as Sather doing damage control by not letting him speak to the press. It is on 590 20/20. There is a line and if he did this, he crossed it. |

Not going to defend Avery here. Other way around. There is most likely worse that has gone on that we will never hear about. Usually, racial comments, personal attacks and such are done in the heat of the moment hockey. When you go to battle, your emotions get the best of you. If this is true, let's not all jump up on a soap box and call for this guys head. They were words. Actions speak louder than words. And for his actions alone, Avery should be disciplined. Trash talking has always been a part of the game and there are unwritten rules. Avery started this crap at pre-game warmups and he did it in the hockey capital of Canada so there will be a ton of publicity and scrutiny. Cancer, death, family, racial remarks etc are and have been used by players in the past and USUALLY, we NEVER hear about it. This was different because it happened in warmups and in TORONTO involving Avery. I'm sure we'd all be surprised to hear some of the comments various NHLers have said over the years if players, coaches and officials didn't abide by an oath of silence. But in todays (WE'RE ABOVE IT ALL SOCIETY) we have to act like we're all perfect. We all make mistakes. Our own Chris Simon made one. Martin Brodeur made one and Sean Avery made yet another one. This crap will pass. Avery should have learned by now but he's still a scumbag, far from someone who just made a mistake. This was premeditated and he got carried away, yet again. Another black eye for an NHL that doesn't need it. |

I think Witt should skate behind him next game and yell out Hey, Avery! Your wife's a dyke! A lesbian! A lesbian! Actually, it would be better if the enforcer of every team just creamed the guy for the rest of the season.... |

LOOK WHO HAS A MEETING WITH THE NHL TODAY Avery called on carpet "The NHL has summoned Sean Avery to Toronto on Tuesday for a hearing as part of an investigation into a pre-game incident with Darcy Tucker and other Maple Leafs on Saturday night at the Air Canada Center. Avery exchanged words first with Jason Blake, and then Tucker, who shoved Avery and the two pointed menacingly with their sticks at the red line. Players from both sides gathered before Avery skated away. Avery and Tucker fought in the first period and Avery refused to talk to reporters after the game. A source said he was told by Rangers general manager Glen Sather to clam up. "He's pissing guys off," Wade Belak told The Ottawa Sun. "He'll bring harm to himself and not too many guys around the league are going to be sad to see it. If he keeps this up, someone is going to kill him." NEWSDAY |
