One day last week I was doing my normal check of all the sports sites and of course found myself checking TSN's Team Rankings (knowing full well what I was going to see). I saw the Isles sitting in 19th spot!!!! So, I checked Fox sports and they had us ranked 3rd. Now, I thought 3rd might be high, but 19th was crazy low. It prompted an email from myself to Scott Cullen (the clown that publishes this crap) and here is the email and reply: From: Greg Rivard [mailto:gtrivard@gov.pe.ca] Sent: Wednesday, November 21, 2007 2:22 PM To: scullen@tsn.ca Subject: Power rankings Scott, you have to be an idiot to rank the Islanders 19th. They lose 2 games in a row and they end up losing 8 spots. You critics need to eat crow and be accountable and admit that the preseason preview of the Isles ended up being completely wrong. Fox Sports has this team ranked 3rd (they actually use a formula.....love to see your's). The Isles are in a playoff spot and have 4 games in hand on most teams in the conference. Since the last rankings came out the Isles won 2 big division games...ON THE ROAD....so I would expect to see them climb into the top 5 using your formula.......oh ya, it's the Islanders....they don't look good on paper so we won't give them the credit they rightfully deservse. 1 spot ahead of the leafs....lol....crazy. Greg, The first thing I'd guess is that Fox's formula doesn't care about goal differential (where the Islanders are dead even, and were minus-1 when the rankings were posted Monday), even though it's widely regarded in the statistical community as the best predictive measure. I also use a formula and find it hard to believe that anyone thinks how a team looks on paper is relevant to my rankings when the Canadiens are ranked second. I have statistical grades for every player on every team and apply them to a weighted formula for each team. That my results are different from Fox doesn't surprise me any, but since I also use mind to handicap games on a nightly basis, I'm far more interested in that as an objective measure. And finally, what kind of crow needs to be eaten at the 17-game mark? Was anyone making pre-season predictions about where a team would be after 17 games? His reply actually makes sense I'm afraid. It seems that the goals for/against thing is a big deal to these number crunchers. Either way, this is ill-timed becuase I expect we will (deservedly) drop even further in the rankings after last week.

If you need more proof that Power Rankings are complete crap, they have Ottawa ranked in the Number 2 spot, and meanwhile the team is in the middle of a six-game losing streak. My advice is to pay attention only to real standings, and take all the power rankings jargon with a grain of salt. |

I'm surprised he responded with the opening....
And not one "eh" in his response. |

good i'd rather they rank us low.. for some reason we play well when we're ranked low on these things and suck ass when they rank us high. |

Goal differential is a tough one. We let up 8 goals in 2 games. That throws everything off. |

If you look at the ranking from the beginning of the season and turn them upside down, they would be closer to correct than what they were. |

When we were winning games it was interesting to look at the rankings, but now on a 3 game losing streak I dont want to even see how far we are dropping. I'll look again after we've won 3 in a row. |
