Snowman is, of course, entirely correct -- although when I expressed similar sentiments on this board over the summer I was considered a villain, but that's besides the point.

But to disagree somewhat with Snowman, I think that Guerin and Satan could qualify as first-line wingers on a team with a great play-making center. Beyond that, though, this team has little to no offensive talent.

And the defense is almost worse, to be honest. Andy Sutton is an absolute butcher with the puck; it's difficult to watch. Witt and Martinek are the only somewhat dependable guys, but I don't think anyone can honestly claim that they'd be 1-2 defensemen on a good team.

And the Islanders should start declining powerplays. They actually manage to play worse on them and generate fewer scoring opportunities.

Simply put, all the talk about having "Ted Nolan type" players is nonsense. You don't win with coaching, you win with talent. And the Isles are sorely lacking in that, and the farm system is in shambles. It's time to rebuild and rethink, but that's naturally painful for us given what we all went through '95-01.

I agree that if we had a consistant play making center those two would probably start to put it in more often, comrie is considered a playmaker but as we all probably notice he is inconsistant, not that i am disapointed in him because being a quarter way in he leads our team in points.

I do disagree with that fact that andy sutton hasnt been what everyone thought he would be. He isnt really known for handling the puck and i feel he is more open to that critisism since he coughed up that puck against boston. But i have actually been impressed with his defensive skills night in and night out. He has blocked shots, played very physical, and over this losing stretch when the team has been down he has attempted to mix it up to try to motivate us.

That being said i still think we may need to make a move sooner or later for a playmaking center, but i thought tamby looked good on monday so we should give it a little more time before we make the move.

I find it amusing that some, and I underscore the word some, point the finger at guys like Hilbert as the reason for lack of production. The team was molded in July by Snow. And those who thought this team was going to contend for the Cup were unrealistic. This is basically where they should be and might be at the end of the season. Unless, Guerin, Sutton, Berard, and Sillinger are given an injection of hockey's version of viagara.

yeah, Hilbert is a default whipping boy for this team.
2 points and ONLY a -3 while Comrie (our leading point producer) is a -10.

I am surprised.
I'm surprised that some islander fans act as if they're giving up once again so early.
Being negative in the off-season.
Being quiet during the good times but very vocal during the bad.

Peaks and valleys. This team like many has potential and should they stay healthy,
correct the powerplay and continue to get good goaltending they'll be right there.

And please let us not forget the trade deadline.

Alot of hockey left and we're not the Caps.

Some things never change. A few losses, a few bad articles in the press about
the lack of scoring and the chicken little syndrome hits full effect.

I think they have done well with the little production they have gotten to be honest. So in some ways, I think we are due for a nice long winning streak. Keep the faith.

Just picturing in my mind hockey's version of viagra. :rotflmao:

Tis just it, it shouldn't be THAT hard. :D

Even with the little blue pill, Berard and Guerin would probably fire blanks. Sutton's been OK except for a couple of huge blunders lately.

You know, with Recchi heading to re-entry waivers, the Islanders could do a lot worse than picking him up on the cheap.

Right On Time.
^ More third line players?

Also a good point about our D. Our top 2 d-men, who are VERY solid and I love have NO offensive skills.

Steve the team isn't that good man. It's not being negative, it's being real. Every year we have the same discussion, every year I speak out about exactly how I view the team, and every year the same people say that we're just being negative. It's not that I'm negative about the team, it's that the team just isn't very good. If the team was good, I would say it's good and I would be positive.

This team is going to have to scratch and claw its way to an 8 seed again, just like it always does. If they actually do make the playoffs, they will more than likely lose in the 1st round like usual.

Does this sound familiar? How many times do you have to get kicked in the face before you cover up? I root hard for the team and I hope they win every game they play, but I'm not going to kid myself about them. They are an entire 1st line away from being a true contender. It's the same song and dance every year.

Snowy, you are a very respected, long time poster and friend. Having said that, pre-assuming that we're nothing more than lower-end playoff team destined for another first round exit is a little premature in my opinion. That's the beauty of pro sports and being a fan.....you never know what's gonna happen next.....never.
I would suggest the next time you start a thread like this, do it while we're on a winning streak and it will be received a little better. ;)

I honestly didn't know what to expect going in to the season. But I can tell you what I came to expect after a few weeks of solid, well-rounded play (AND WINS)...and frankly I am uber disappointed now, only because they already showed me they can play better than they have been as of late.

Good point, they've shown they can play better. And Sybo, you are definitely King of the Avatars. You roll out great ones left and right. Those are some monstrous farts.

That's exactly the problem/challenge for us.

They came out real strong, then tripped a bit... part of it, though, I think is that the schedule was so goofy and also we have a few guys playing hurt.

It will get better... or a trade will happen, or an injury, something...

I genuinely believe they simply need to fix what was once a very effective PP. This seems to be the core problem IMO. Once it is fixed the overall confidence will return.

it should be noted that I decided to change my avatar during the game last night out of sheer superstition...I thought the change may shake up the teams mojo (silly I know). Well within about 2 minutes of the change...they scored goal #3
