It's time once again to take a look at how teams are performing around the NHL relative to what one would expect based on Goals For/Against ratios, and it's PythagenPuck to the rescue.
For newbies, the basic idea here is that at this point in the season, perhaps a better description of team performance is to be found in their Goals For/Against ratios than in their Win/Loss totals. Last season, a similar analysis I performed at this point sagely predicted that Ottawa was still a beast despite their sub-.500 record, and that the Boston Bruins, who at that time were in line for a playoff berth, were ready for a steep fall into NHL oblivion.
What I do here is look at Goals For and Against during regulation play (i.e. excluding shootouts and overtime), and look at how teams are earning points in the standings, compared to how many points the PythagenPuck formula would predict. For most teams, these numbers are quite close, but for the few outliers on each end of the spectrum, one can make the argument that wins or losses are about to pile up with increasing frequency unless something drastic changes on that particular team.
The table outlining all this has been made available over at Google Spreadsheets, something I'm finding to be a very useful tool for sharing information like this. The first few columns (GF, GA, Pts) come right from the typical NHL standings. Then we have OT/SO Wins, Reg GF (Goals For in regulation time only), Reg GA, Reg Pts (basically points in the standings not earned in OT/SO), Regulation Win %, Expected Win % from the formula, then the Difference between those two. Snarky comments come in last. Teams are sorted in declining order of Diff; in other words, from the most Overperforming team to the most Underperforming team.

So who's ready for a fall, and who's lurking in the weeds? It appears that the New York Islanders are the team playing highest over their heads at this point in time, somehow compiling a 9-6 record in regulation despite being outscored 44-42. Ottawa is also outperforming, but even if they regressed to the Expectation level they'd still win the Presidents Trophy handily, so no worries there. And in Phoenix, continuing down the path they're on could lead to another Western Conference last-place finish, but we'll have to see how the addition of Ilya Bryzgalov affects the team.
On the underachieving side we have primarily the Buffalo Sabres, who apparently do miss those guys Briere and Drury, but at least shouldn't be the worst team in the Eastern Conference as a result. Then we have two teams in the West which could make serious noise this season. The Columbus Blue Jackets are playing like an old Dallas team under Ken Hitchcock, and only an 0-4 OT/SO record is holding them back from garnering greater attention for their rise through the standings. The San Jose Sharks are also playing better than their record indicates so far, and in fact their GF/GA ratio in regulation surpasses Detroit for the best in the West.
What this analysis assumes, of course, is that a given team's performance in terms of GF/GA will remain relatively constant, and that the wins and losses will shake out accordingly. But as we know, dramatic swings can sometimes take place due to injury (as when Anaheim got hit with concurrent injuries to Pronger, Giguere, and Beauchemin last year) or by a coaching change (St. Louis before and after Andy Murray looked like two different teams, much like Atlanta appears this season). This tool can be a useful signal to action for teams like the Islanders that they shouldn't get too comfortable with their early success, or serve as a reason for calm in places like Columbus where there's every reason to believe that they're on the right track.
The Forechecker is here to take NHL statistical analysis up another level,

With respect to our situation...this analysis (hardy har) is flawed because we had about 3 games where we allowed an embarassing number of goals. And despite what this f#@ktard thinks...at the end of the day, IT IS ONLY THE WIN/LOSS DIFFERENTIAL THAT MATTERS !!!!

So with all due repect to this number-crunching self rightious mumbo jumbo I say: Suck Mr. Forechecker...suck it deep !!!

you probably don't even need the 3 games (but i hear what your saying) just the one against the leafs, this funny math would have very different results.

Yep, Mumbo Jumbo it is. We built our D and we have an outstanding goaltender. 4-16 in two games vs Toronto and carolina. Devils got respect we are not yet! If we add a snipper and a Blueline scorer we will be a force

No. They were absolutely pathetic. I remember the first time FOX used them. That night ESPN showed the highlights of the game and it had the glowpuck lines and on the first slap shot Dan Patrick yelled, "Oh my god, that's a lazer blast that COULD actually kill some one!!!" Then Keith Olberman said on the next shot, "we went to plad" (line from Spaceballs). Then when they showed NBA highlights they started asking, "where are the colored lines for the shots?" They were killing FOX, the NHL and glow pucks all night and deservedly so.

They never kept the puck glowing the entire game just at certain times, and I was able deal with it perfectly, but DAMN I never knew it caused that much of a travesty, that stuff happened ten years ago when hockey was awesome, especially when it was on FOX there were so many promos and ads from bud light Quaker State, hell even I remember Mike Richter was doing ads for Wendy's.
As soon as when hockey left FOX to ABC ratings went DOWNHILL as far as weekend coverage was concerened.

But as for the article is it me or is it that every time I have faith for the Islanders they end up struggling, last year when the Islanders whooped the RAG$ 2-0 at the Coliseum, I believed in this team to come home with Stanley's mug, then BOOOM, 6 game losing streak. Nolan better whip them up to shape ,and start scoring.

Right On Time.
Hey, we are biased but if I saw a team that was (Before tonight) 4 games over .500 and has the least goals IN THE LEAGUE, in a hard division, I would say that team is overachieving too.

Also the reason why the Rangers were always ahead of us in the rankings is because they started off awful, didn't win a road game night after night, had injuries, had new guys playing like crap but still were okay, now look, I hate them more than life, but they aren't even at full strength yet and they are 15-9.

I mean look at the Devils, they had all those road games, were playing like crap but these teams (Who aren't exactly scoring machines either) can get on a roll.

It just sucks that our great start is pretty much washed away and now at best we fight and claw for a 7th or 8th seed. While the Rags could easily be a 2- seed.

It is too hard on everyone to play on eggshells each night and not score 3 goals even once (It really is amazing when I say it out loud or type it). THREE goals, I mean teams score 4 in a period, we don't score 3 in a game for 12 games. It is un-real.

The only positive is we haven't sunk ourselves, but every night is a playoff game and a grind and a battle and one goal is like 3 for us. I mean after tonight DP will have to have 20 starts in a row (Not all Dubie fault but still, talk about deflating). Real good teams need to have some margin for error, some butt whoopings under their belts etc. It will only be harder as we go along not easier.

If we win more than 15 games this year we will have exceeded all of the expert boneheads' expectations. Just more fuel for the fire....

If we were overperforming then other teams we would be scoring more then 3 goals a game.

Ottawa has lost 7 in a row(some in OT, as I recall), they were right behind us in winning more than expected(whatever that means). I'll bet their board is clamoring for call ups, trades, line changes, etc.-just like here!

What area are we overperforming in exactly? Having the worst PP for so many seasons in a row that I've lost count? :dontknow:
