Oh, come on! He looked absolutely mortified and depressed. And a little kid reached down to high-five him. What's he gonna do... slap his hand down? It was kids night for free, right? |

Reading some of the posts you would think that it was july 1st all over again. Wake up people, the team is 13-11-1, 8th spot a playoff team, every team goes through ups and downs, throughout the year. And THANKFULLY the team is still in a good spot going forward. If i told you dec 4, the isles would be where they are most of you would be happy. Yes we were spoilt at the beginning of the year, and yes the lack of scoring is upsetting but come on people, these lines for the exception of Sillingers line are new to each other. This road trip comes at a perfect time as Jaffe said last night, the boys are going to be with there Dad's and it will be a time to gel as a unit, and start rolling of some wins. The true bright spot this year is, i know this team won't give up, so fans let's not give up either. I don't normally agree with puckhead but as he said we are a middle of the road team, but that should be enough to get us in the playoffs( after that anything can happen). And Queen i've been an Islander fan a long time too, and this team bears no similarities to any of the crappy teams in the nineties. No chicken little's here please the sky isn't falling. |

Because these teams are prepared to go and scout europe THOROUGHLY, its something that Milbury tried... but didnt get it right. (Martinek aside) it comes down to scouting, some of the NHL's best players are from europe, and you see names like Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Alfredsson, Elias, (to use Ottawa, Devs and Detriot) etc drafted, they know where to go get them. The best example was how 17 odd teams walked straight passed Alexie Cherepanov in the draft... without a doubt hes as close to Kane in skill as anyone, yet they walk passed him because he's Russian. Rangers are certainly picking up on this, see Henrik Lundqvist, Petr Prucha, and now Cherepanov. But its way off topic... Sutton fanned a pass, whoopy, one mistake, lets crusify him shall we?! It's not his fault the sucking offense cant bail him out. Overall, he's been solid to start the year and given a nasty edge we needed to accompany Witt. Jon Sim was desperatly unlucky. You want to look at Comrie and "captain" and our alledged "offense" as a whole before the two "Atlanta Boys". |

Bingo....Totallypucked. This team needs a lot of improvement in the scouting and drafting category. A LOT of improvement. |

I'm not saying that our scouting is great but part of me laughs at this....How bout all the Islanders that everyone lists that we traded away??? Did our team not scout these players and they've gone on to have successful careers elsewhere? Maybe just MAYBE we should let Bergie and Tamby and whomever else time, like 2-3 full seasons before we say they are busts. Yes we haven't gotten a Crosby type player in the draft but we have drafted very good players....the isles traded them away for one reason or another over the years. People need to get there heads on straight.....the conf is better then last year we will be in the fight from 6-9 place all year, if you thought we were going to win the divison this year you were kidding yourself or hoping for a miracle. This team will compete night in and night out and we will be there in the end. This is year 2!!! of a plan set in motion last year, I know your sick of waiting but you have to wait till year 3-5 to see if this plan will work out. |

When it comes to drafting scoring forwards......this team simply has done a terrible job in that area. Yes, the team has traded good players away like torres, Robert Luongo and others. But that all falls on Mike Milbury. I read an article once that said Wang spends zero or very little money on scouting and that for years, the Isles employed a parttime scout in Europe. And they use a scouting service (Not their own scouts) to scan for talent in various parts of the globe. That simply has to change if we're to be successful with younger players. And I totally agree on your point about Tamby and Bergie. Until this team commits to them with regular ice time and gives them a chance to develop, you can't call them busts. And that usually takes 2 to 3 years like you said. Problem is, we don't give either of them any kind of ice time to gauge how talented they are. |

I get the feeling Wang doesn't feel he has that long to wait. He wants a winning product on ice now. I don't think he wants to spend time waiting for the chips to fall into place. Aside from Ricky who was already in place before Wang showed up, and the three defensmen, who here is an islander product? Bergie's been disappointing (and judging by logan today he is now on the 4th line) anyone? beuller? Wang is a results now kind of guy. The team is better now then it was when he bought it. He did that through free agency and trades, not the draft. |

The team is definitely better now than when Wang bought it, but that aint saying much. We missed the playoffs seven straight years prior. Yup pretty much the tream has been built through free agency and trades and not the draft. And that's the problem-----this team is not a cup contender for the long term. I feel a lot of fans, like myself, are tired of seeing a team year after year squeak into the post season and get blown out...........so maybe the franchise's philosophy needs to change and that means putting more resources into amateur scouting, drafting and talent evaluation. Whether or not Wang wants to do that long term remains to be seen. But that approach is definitely needed. |

They are putting a winning product on the ice right now...would you rather be the Capitals stuck in last place year after year or be in the playoffs each year? We've only missed the playoffs once since Wang has been here. The Milbury thing didn't work out...not that any of us are shocked but it didn't. Now we are on year 2 of his next approach...Wang is a buiness man...he knows this approach would not yeild a cup winner right off the bat, he is trying to put a competitve team on the ice now while building towards his new arena and a cup contender. |

I am not complaining and fully realize we are on year two of the phase. But I won't be fully convinced this team is a cup contender until they do a better job in the area of young talent evaluation and drafting. Yes, that takes time but its an area that we definitely need better results in if we are to become a great team and take bold steps year after year. I don't put much stock into "we've only missed the playoffs once" under Wang. That should be a minimum accomplishment year after year and a starting point if you're striving for success. After all, 15 other teams make the playoffs as well. |

Are you ready to buy tickets and go through a rebuilding stage? I think most people here are also in the lets win now mode, as difficult as that is. If we weren't at least squeaking into the playoffs, there would be more talk about us moving to another city too I think. I personally would trade 2 - 3 years now for a sustained run with talented youth leading the charge. That being said, I think our best hope now is our money under the cap. If we can get a talented offensive player for a few years it has to be done, and start from scratch through drafting while putting together these one year warrior teams. |

I do believe this is Wang's thinking too. We are now in NFL mode here in the NHL, where the salary cap space is more valuable than picks. Because of the way that teams have to operate you will have some talent every year in the free agency/trade market, that may not have existed pre-salary cap. Rather then waste the 4-5 years developing a prospect, Wang can lay down cash for a one year rental who is already at the NHL level. And not have to fund a full scouting department. Central scouting doesn't do an awful job, the isles will draft whatever sure bet is on the market, and if he develops then great, if not, he'll be shipped elsewhere for someone that will. Its a brave new NHL and Wang is definately the guy that will be able to milk it. |

With free agency age lowered it's now almost impossible to build through the draft and create a dynasty. I can understand 1 or 2 players but since they take a few years to develop and usually after their first or second contracts expire they're ready for that big payday... a good blend or free agency, trades and home grown talent is more realistic, along with some luck. |

I've only been a STH for 7 years so I can't compare to those that went through the horror of the late 90's but as long as they compete I will buy season tickets. Puckhead - I agree that getting to the 7/8th spot this year is only acceptable if we advance past the first round, if that doesn't happen this season would be a failure but I wouldn't jump the boat if they played well all season. Of the 20 players on the current roster 7 of them are from our orginazation, now only 2 are forwards so that might explain our good D bad offense currently. |
