Bergeron’s backtalk upsets Nolan

When Islanders assistant coach Gerard Gallant sent out defensemen Chris Campoli and Bruno Gervais to man the points for a five-on-three power play in the third period of their 4-3 shootout loss Wednesday night in Atlanta, Marc-Andre Bergeron protested. Bergeron felt he should be on the ice in that situation to fire his booming point shot with plenty of space to get it through, and he let Gallant know in a heated exchange that was captured by FSNY’s cameras.

Gallant downplayed the incident with a smile this afternoon after the Isles practiced at BankAtlantic Center. “At the time, it was heated, but it was really nothing,” Gallant said. “It was just about the power play setup is all. It doesn’t affect anything.”

Head coach Ted Nolan will be the one to decide whether or not Bergeron’s outburst affected his playing status for Friday night’s game against Florida, and he didn’t sound as forgiving as Gallant. “Yeah, I do have a problem with that,” Nolan said. “That’s going to be rectified. There’s times to do it, and there’s times not to do it. Definitely, that wasn’t the right time. We’ll be addressing both individuals, and we’ll make some corrections.”

Bryan Berard, who often serves as power play quarterback, was a healthy scratch in Atlanta, but Nolan said that will change. “We need Bryan to play better than he has, and I’m quite sure he will,” Nolan said. “But you take into consideration he only played [55] games the last two years because he got hurt. We had a couple good practices, and you’ll see him back in tomorrow night.”

Nolan didn’t specify whether that means Bergeron will be scratched or not. He has gone with seven defensemen a number of times and easily could do so again, especially after not using forward Sean Bergenheim at all in the first period when the Isles spent most of their time killing penalties. But the smart money is on Nolan to bench Bergeron.

Bruno and Campy are Nolans go to guys in many situations. (Witt-Martinek on the PK especially 5 on 3). Bergeron should know that. Maybe Nolan didnt want take that chance and be embarrassed by Atlanta getting a breakaway on our 5 on 3 PP with a MAB giveaway.

yeah, I thought that too, but wasn't he also on for a long shift prior to that PP,
that's I thought Gallant told him to sit down and shut up.

I like Bergeron but you never talk back and show up your coaches.
Frustration at it's worst.

I believe we'll be in for alot of people's fantasy trades now after this one.

Hopefully we get 2 pts tonight and have better things to discuss.

I know a lot of fans are taking the negative look on the MAB situation from the other night but I kind of like that MAB wanted to be out there. At least it shows he wants to play and help our team.

I think situations like that are a learning exp for all and could make them tighter.

Otherwise, Snow may be shopping for the Holidays, and not for home.

caught that earlier this morning... I wish I had seen it during the game. I'm not sure where this sense of "entitlement" comes from on MAB's part, but it certainly is unwarranted and downright dillusional of him to think he SHOULD be out there. I expect him to sit tonight.

I have to agree with that as well. While Bruno might be a go to guy for Nolan he was sat for a game and MAB took his spot on the pairing with Campoli while Berard was with Sutton.

I could be wrong but I thought MAB had been playing a better overall game. I like a player to show a little fire and most times this season its Campy and MAB or Berard on the PP, now maybe on 5 on 3's its Campy and Bruno I don't know.

Unless he told the coach to go #&@% a donkey or something, than I have no problem with him wanting to be out there. He is supposed to be a go-to guy on the PP anyway, so he should be questioning why he was out there. Nonetheless, his play hasn't earned him any special favors from the coaches, so they can do as they please regarding this situation.

I disagree. He just wants to pad his stats on the power play. MAB is not a team player and not much of a hockey player. Guy need to go. Nolan should sit him for more than one game.

Look at it this way, padding his stats on PP, would help us in trade...instead of getting a bag of pucks, we could work in some sticks as well. We will get something in return for him but i do not part with him yet especially with injuries that always occur.

I think he really wanted to be out there and feels he could of done something, even if his shots misses and banks off of the goalie or the boards, it creates a second chance. the question remains: will there be an Islander for the rebound chance? Only if that shot gets through...It seems like a majority of our shots get blocked more than other teams.

don't know the situation because I didn't watch the game. However,...

I do think it is great that MAB wants to be out there for that situation. You want guys who want the puck in key spots. However, getting into a yelling match with a coach on the bench is not how to handle it.

Sorry, I want MAB out there rather than Bruno on a 5 on 3. I'm not going to question the coach's decision because I don't know the specifics of the situation (end of shift, who's playing better) but with all things being equal and there were no "issues" to consider, I want MAB out there on a 5 on 3.

One of the coach's jobs is to put players in the best sitautions to help the team win. Without knowing the specifics, MAB is much better suited to a 5 on 3 than Bruno is.

With that said, I have no problem is MAB is benched. You just don't do what he did. I am now pretty confident that he will not be in orange and blue come the New Year due to this incident.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

Not sure what MAB said, here's a picture of the incident, can we get a translation?
