Prospect returns to the NHL after a strong showing in checking center role in Bridgeport

Jeremy Colliton
Center Jeremy Colliton was recalled from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on an emergency basis and joined the Islanders for practice at Iceworks this morning.

“This is an opportunity for me and I have to make the most of it,” said the 23-year old Colliton.

It is an opportunity Colliton has earned with his tenacity and perseverance after undergoing shoulder surgery last season. In 47 games with the Sound Tigers this season, Colliton has matched up against the opponents' top lines and has seen significant penalty killing time. He has six goals and three assists and is second on the Sound Tigers with two shorthanded goals.

Colliton played 19 games for the Islanders in the 2005-06 season and one game the following year. He has recorded one goal and one assist in the NHL.

The native of Blackie, Alberta was originally drafted by the Islanders in the second round of the 2003 NHL Draft. In 158 career games over three seasons with the Sound Tigers, Colliton is 37-47-84. In junior, he was a member of Team Canada at the 2003 and 2004 World Junior Championships and was captain of the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League.
After a narrow victory in 1994, Boston Bruins defenseman Al Iafrate was asked why, in the closing moments of the game, he had fired the puck around the boards rather than into the empty net. His reply? "Empty-net goals are for faggots"

I wont be renewing either. Between the team sucking and with all the family fun packs, 4,5,8,10,14 or 21 game pkgs, kids day, screw the STHer promos, and a bunch of other promos, we'll pick and choose the spots we'll go to the Coliseum. We'll save and not be aggravated at the same time.

Why should I show up if the team doesn't? And if they turn out to be contenders next year, I'll sign up with 25 games left like Selanne or Neidermeyer for the rest of the season and playoffs.

The way the economy is going, it's wise to cut back anyway. But the key for me is what you said -- the team showing up occasionally. To lose the amount of home games they have in a row is embarrassing.

Nolan's new lines for tomorrow's game consist of Tambellini, Nielsen, Comeau combination – Islanders (24-24-6) at Pittsburgh (29-19-5), 7:30 pm, TV: FSN NY, Radio: Bloomberg 1130

Ted Nolan said following this morning's skate at Iceworks that Miroslav Satan would miss the Islanders' game against Pittsburgh, tomorrow at 7:30 at Mellon Arena. Filling in for the injured Satan will be Bridgeport call-up Jeremy Colliton.

"Miro has one of those nagging injuries that could take a couple of days or a couple of weeks to heal," said Nolan. "One thing about Miro is that he deserves a lot of credit for playing through pain. We'll rest him the next couple of days and see how he reacts in Minnesota and re-evaluate them. We want to reward kids who are doing well at the American Hockey League. Colliton is a guy who is getting better and better. He deserves an opportunity to come up."

Once again, the Islanders went through an up-tempo practice. The players were dressed today, according to jersey colors, in five-man units. With the following forward and defensive line combinations together.

Defensemen
2  Aaron Johnson - 8 Bruno Gervais  (Red)
25 Andy Sutton - 44 Freddy Meyer    (Blue)
4  Bryan Berard – 47 Marc-Andre Bergeron (Orange)
24 Radek Martinek – 32 Brendan Witt  (Grey)

Forwards
10 Richard Park – 89 Mike Comrie - 13 Bill Guerin (Red)
15 Jeff Tambellini – 51 Frans Nielsen – 57 Blake Comeau (Blue)
20 Sean Bergenheim – 72 Jeremy Colliton - 26 Ruslan Fedotenko (Orange)
11 Andy Hilbert 63 - Josef Vasicek – 7 Trent Hunter (Grey)

A line of note was that of Bridgeport teammates Jeff Tambellini, Frans Nielsen and Blake Comeau. While Comeau wasn't on their line in Bridgeport much this season, he is very familiar with his fellow prospects.

"We look at this line as having youthful enthusiasm," said Nolan.

"Tambellini and Frans have played well together for quite some time down in Bridgeport. Blake Comeau is another young, enthusiastic player. They looked good in practice today. There's nothing like a young, energized line to energize the rest of the team."

The Islanders will take on a Sidney Crosby-less Penguins team that is still finding ways to earn points. Pittsburgh is only two points back of the Atlantic Division-leading Philadelphia Flyers.

Up front, Evgeni Malkin is carrying the load having tied Crosby in points with 63. Goaltender Ty Conklin has been nearly unbeatable since taking over the starting position from the injured Marc-Andre Fleury. Conklin has earned points in 15 of 18 games.
