Islanders visit Washington

lets keep the streak alive 5 in a row baby!

I just came from Iceworks and I saw Chris Simon and Bruno Gervais skating. Ted Nolan was there also coaching them. On my way out to the car I saw Richard park get into his car (he PARKed next to me lol) He waved at me and I waved back, I also saw AAron Johnson waiting at the light and I gave him the thumbs up! Bruno seemed to skate pretty well but I doubt he'll play; and could Simon be back for the Tampa game?

We shall see...

Edit.... Sutton out for a few weeks. Drew Fata called up to replace.

After a narrow victory in 1994, Boston Bruins defenseman Al Iafrate was asked why, in the closing moments of the game, he had fired the puck around the boards rather than into the empty net. His reply? "Empty-net goals are for faggots"

And this is where our defense really begins to struggle. We need at least 3 goals to have a chance in this one.

"Begins"?

It's been a struggle all year. As one poster said, Fata is better than Berard and Bergeron as was inserting Aaron Johnson.

How is Fata better the MAB and Berard? I just don't see how people can say that.

Position wise, less turnovers...yes, Bergeron has a rocket for a shot and Berard can score an occasional goal...but we have enough turnover plagued defensemen on this team already

And Fata is such a steady defenmen that he hasn't sniffed the NHL lineup unless people are hurt? We went as far as to sign 2 guys from Germeny last year instead of having Fata play regular time and 6 other guys this off-season.

I mean come on, does MAB and Berard make mistakes...YES but statements like thank god Fata is here is just crazy IMO.

I dont think that Fata will be the savior of the team until we get the D back. I havent been able to watch him other than the clips on the Soundtigers site. MAB does give up the puck alot more than he he should and Berard as I think is a weak player. I guess its what we gotta do while our 'regular' players heal up. No sense in arguing about it, Nolan and Snow made the call and its gonna happen.

as long as they keep this point streak going, I could care less who they call up. Surprise they haven't called up Stormy yet to give Sparky a breather now and then.

No. It is your statement of saying thank god fata is here is crazy. Stop overblowing someone else's statement.

What I said was he is a better positional defenseman. I didn't say he was great or even good. But he is better than MAB and Berard in this particular area of the game.

The New York Islanders' recent winning streak has kept them in contention for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference - right alongside the Washington Capitals, another team looking to sneak into the postseason.

The Islanders and Capitals, both sitting just outside playoff position, will be looking for two important points when they meet at the Verizon Center on Wednesday night.

New York (28-25-7) recently lost seven straight to fall out of the East's top eight, but has responded with four consecutive wins, including Monday's 3-2 comeback victory at home over San Jose.

New York hasn't won five in a row since December 2003.

The Islanders trailed the Sharks 2-0 early in the third period, but got three goals in an eight-minute stretch, including the winner from defenseman Freddy Meyer with less than nine minutes left.

That kind of improved offensive play has carried New York on its current run. The Islanders managed just 11 goals during their seven-game skid, but they've scored 16 over their four-game win streak.

New York is among the NHL's bottom five teams with just 2.47 goals per game this season, but 10 Islanders have scored goals during the current run. Four have come from Ruslan Fedotenko, and Meyer has scored two after 73 straight games without a goal.

"I'll take whatever I can get," Meyer told the Islanders' official Web site. "All that's important is that we got the win, which was huge. We're right back in it, but we have to keep going."

The Capitals (28-26-6) are in a similar position, one point behind the Islanders and tied for 11th in the tightly bunched East. Washington is also tied for second place in the Southeast Division.

The Capitals avoided a third straight loss with a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay on Saturday. Washington blew a 2-0 advantage in just 33 seconds late in the third period, but regained the lead less than a minute later on Alexander Semin's goal.

"It seems like we say it after every game," Capitals goalie Olaf Kolzig said. "Don't leave our games early. The resolve to get the winning goal says a lot about our team."

NHL goals leader Alexander Ovechkin was held without a point for the second straight game, but Washington snapped a four-game losing streak in games in which he fails to record a point. The 22-year-old forward tops the league with 48 goals.

Washington also won despite allowing 41 shots, the most since it gave up 53 to Buffalo in a 7-3 loss on Oct. 13. Kolzig had 39 saves, allowing only two goals for the third straight game.

The Capitals have lost two straight and 10 of their last 13 against the Islanders, failing to score more than two goals in any of the last eight meetings. New York, meanwhile, has managed five or more goals in seven of the last 13 matchups.

Forward Bill Guerin has four goals in New York's last two games against the Capitals, including a hat trick in his last visit to the Verizon Center on Oct. 18, a 5-2 Islanders win.

New York won't have defenseman Andy Sutton on Wednesday as it tries to extend its run. Sutton tore a hamstring in the closing seconds against San Jose and will be sidelined from four to six weeks.

It is the latest blow to an Islanders defense corps already missing Brendan Witt and Bruno Gervais.

If you are betting a $100 for the Islanders, you will win $144 (underdogs)
To win $100 betting for the Capitals, you will have to bet $154 (favorites)

The over/under on goals is 5.5 under - meaning, there is a slight favor towards scoring less than 5.5 goals - so think a 3-2 score.

It's actually not that hard.

+144 means that if you bet $100 on the Islanders, you will receive $244 back (your original $100 bet and $144).

-154 means that you need to bet 154 to win 100.

This actually shows that the caps are pretty big favorites. 110/120 is usually a close game. I wouldn't put 154 on the caps to win 100 tonight.
