The Best That Ever Skated 80-81-82-83

He's won nothing. He's been with Isles since being drafted in 2000 = 8 years If he had a 3 year contract good chance he would be gone Isles are stuck with him because of the length of his contract. He's getting older and last number of games he's horrible. The goalie and QB take all the credit when winning and blame when losing. Sure the D could be better but any team has the same situation. With Isles and DP it seems they have no flexibility to trade him to improve the team. I4C we will never see eye to eye on this which is OK When's the next game

sigh... everyone just turn an "ignore" button on in their heads so things don't escalate. Sadly, DiPi's stats are what they are, and there are arguements for both sides of the fence. Every week I have the same arguements with my friends from TO. And believe it or not, I've been the one defending DiPi tooth and nail. And Zep is Zep. Think of him more of a mascot than a poster and it will be easier to swallow. We all have our quirks, you can either let them annoy you... or not. |

I was thinking more about his "style of play" or specific things he does IN GAME such as...you think he plays angles badly, or he overhandles the puck (which he actually does alot less), or he doesn't fight hard enough to see through screens (which I've always thought was a legit criticism). What you listed is more about stuff DP doesn't control, but they are criticisms so good enough. Zep, I'd love to have discussions with you or anyone else about specifics rather than having the same statement repeated all the time. I do think the Isles could trade DP in a heartbeat if they wanted. If you think a team like Ottawa or Pittsburgh or Washington wouldn't want DP, I think you'd be surprised. If an injury ends his career prematurely, the team won't take the cap hit for the length of the contract because it was signed prior to his turning 35. At 4.5 mill a year, DP will be a steal for the next decade atleast. Also, while DP has had a rough time since the ASG (and I didn't give you grief for your posts during the TB game or some of the others because there was no defense for him) name a top goalie that hasn't had a rough spot this season. Brodeur got off to a lousy start that last a good part of October. Lundqvist hasn't been a world beater in the past month. His fans were booing him at msg when we played there. Miller has been up and down this year. Luongo has had a few rough patches. Turco is guiltier of overhandling the puck than DP. Even your boy Osgood was yanked in back to back games a few weeks back and has already been run out of that town previously. I'm not saying they all suck or that DP is better than them. I'm saying that ALL goalies go through rough patches over the course of a season. Heck, Kipper's entire season has been a rough patch in Calgary. While I disagree with you about the "if he had a 3 year contract he'd be gone", that's your feeling and your entitled to it. I don't think anyone made an inquiry about DP at the deadline not because they wouldn't take him, but I think the Isles won't entertain any offers for him. Now, is that his fault or managments? I want to see EVERY Islander succeed. I call them out when they play badly and defend guys when I think they are unfairly criticized...as evidence with my incorrect holding out hope against hope that MAB would turn it around or that Hilbert would figure out where the ocean is and score 20 this year. I freely admit I'm not always right, but one of the reasons we come to this site is to discuss and exchange ideas. I'd like to hear more of your ideas because when you express your ideas an exchange can take place. And I actually have no idea when the next game is...I know its Toronto. Was hoping you could tell me. LOL |

Hey Led, Every Goalie I4C mentioned has accomplished far more than DP has in his 8 years, whether individually or teamwise, he needs to go down the ladder to compare him to other goalies. The biggest games in the last year (getting us into the playoffs) and many of the top exciting ones (vs Devils in Dec, Arbour night, the OT win vs Tor, MSG win over Rangers, etc) have not involved Dipietro. Dipietro should not even be mentioned in the same breadth as those other goalies mentioned. For the amount of games he has played over the last few years he should have had a larger % of memorable (in a postive way) games. Instead we are stilll witnessing the same mistakes he was making back in 2001. 2006-2007 will not be remembered for Dipietro's accomplishments, but how a goalie named Dubie did the impossible to get Isles into playoffs. Now we are stuck with a veteran, aging beyond his years goalie who is locked in for 13 more years. No matter what is thrown back at us, DP has not accomplished anything compared to his hype. |

Who in this park, or even in the whole world, doesn't have problems? Who doesn't have a drink too many times once in a while and maybe even winds up passed out in their own driveway, pissing themselves? Who doesn't drink too much sometimes or who doesn't have a puff from time to time? And who doesn't have problems with the people they love? This is our home. This is our community. lets get drunk and eat chicken fingers

Wow Caber. If you truly believe this line... then I really have to wonder if you've been watching the games this year, or in 2001 for that matter. You're entitled to your opinion, but I surely don't see what you do. As for the goalies I mentioned, what have Miller, Lundqvist, Kipper, Turco, Luongo done? They've won a playoff series or two? Good for them. None of them has a ring. None of them has hardward from awards night. There is no Vezina, Conn Smyth or Stanley Cup ring in any of their possessions. They all have in common the fact that they have been roundly criticized by their own fan base for stretches of time. Miller, Lundqvist and Kipper are enjoying that very criticism now. Luongo has in the past and so has Turco. His playoff failures have nearly had him run out of town. Yes, they have all won playoff series...it is true. But have any of them single handedly won the playoff series? They have all had significant assistance. Miller played behind the highest scoring offense for two years. As soon as it wasn't, Buffalo struggles to make the playoffs. Lundqvist was BRUTAL in his first playoff appearance...didn't even finish it and got the gift of his ONLY playoff win by facing the worst team in the playoffs last year...Atlanta. Kipper has been to a final, along with guys like Iginla but didn't win and hasn't been deep in the playoffs since. Turco, prior to last season's playoff where he played well in a first round loss, he as Dallas' weakness in the playoffs. Luongo...he finally MADE the playoffs last year. Yes, it's true that Rick hasn't won a series yet, but to place the blame of that at Rick's feet soley is like placing Dan Marino's lack of a superbowl win soley as his fault. I'm not saying Rick is the DM of goalies. Rick hasn't done anything yet to be mentioned in goaltending lore like DM has with qb's. But the idea was mentioned by Zep that goalies and qb's get all the credit and all the blame. Well, I've never bought into that. No one is running around saying what a great qb Trent Dilfer and Rob Johnson are...and Detroit loved Ozzy so much after his cup they ran him out of town. Placing a teams fate on the shoulders of one guy out of 54 on an nfl roster or 1 guy on a 20 man nhl roster doesn't fly with me. I get your point and your entitled. However, Is all forgiven for Eli now that he's won a bowl? No. Giants fans will give him no slack come week 2. When you are dead last in scoring...that is where your problem lies. I understand Zep doesn't like the contract and he has items about DP that do and don't necessarily have to do with his performance. That's his right. But objectively, come on...we have scored 2 goals in more than half our games, 1 or fewer in approx 33% of our games...I'm not thinking goaltending or blueline help is our first priority. I don't even care that you criticize DP. That's your right...go nuts. But the last post zep and caber gave are much better than just repeating the same vague posts and other stuff. At least you gave us some specifics to discuss...which is what the board, I think, is supposed to be about. Good night to both of you. Much to Zep's shagrin , I don't have to teach tomorrow (we are on spring break this week) . I am going to check on my "supposed" (just teasing you Zep) child in his crib and then head off to bed.

What exactly has DP accomplished in his 8 yrs compared the other goalies you have mentioned? Lundqvist: Olympic Gold Medal, Finalist for Vezina every yr in the league, playoff series victory (who cares who it was over, playoff round win is a win), NHL leader in shutouts in front of what I hear on this list is a terrible Defense Osgood: 2x Cup winner, 3 trips to finals, and just as many playoff wins in his only playoff series w/Isles than the last 3 Islander trips vs Otw, TB, Buffalo, current leader in GAA Kipper: 2004 Finals, Western Conference championship. VEZINA WINNER: 2006 ( I guess there is some awards night awards here) Career Notes: NHL First All-Star Team (2006) Vezina Trophy (2006) Traded to Calgary by San Jose for Calgary's 2nd round choice (Marc-Edouard Vlasic) in 2005 Entry Draft, November 16, 2003. Signed as a free agent by Timra (Sweden), September 20, 2004. Miller: 2007 Presidents trophy Buffalo Sabre Team, 2 playoff round wins 2006. 2 playoff round wins 2007 Luongo: 1 playoff round win, better stats than DP in front of terrible Fla teams, first yr with a decent team went to playoffs, Vezina finalist, 3rd in league in SO, 5th in Save %. 33 less goals allowed in the same amount of games as DP...not sure if more offense could help that out. Turco: His numbers dwarf DP's, has 1 playoff round victory, but I agree other than this past yr seems to be Dallas' playoff weakness. Dubie: Miracle win streak to get Isles into playoffs 06-07, Easter Epic, Arbour Night, etc DP: ????? |
