Joey Mac was great..I have to agree with previous posts, Comrie is totally lazy. I hope they trade his ass off. His effort is completely nonexistant. |

I don't know how to say this nicely, but i'll say it right here...this is an AWFUL team we watched tonight. Defensively not the worst, but no playmaking ability whatsoever. The offense looks pathetic, and any goals they'd score in this fashion would be from occasional redirects. I'm usually optimistic (if any of you know me from metsblog or hotfoot you'd know that) but this team is godawful. |

Here's an idea.... Let's sign a player who can actually skate across the blue line (besides Park, that is).... or maybe over any 2 lines. Joey Mac was the best Islander tonight... I wish he could play for a few weeks straight. Good thing, too. I fear that DP will be injured the first time he stretches for one, . |

I liked the uptempo style we played with tonight...Joey Mac was a nice surprise, really good stuff from him tonight.. My only gripe tonight was the lack of GOOD scoring chances tonight..But I tip my hat the the devils, they played good D and Brodeur took this one away from us. |

I wouldn't go that far. It's only one game but it looks like this team still has some of the same problems it did last year mainly scoring goals. |

shoot to score & play to win

Well the rags have 6 points, we have none. Watching this game tonight was really boring, positives for me were the play of Joey Mac, Kyle Okposo, Sean Bergenheim and Richard Park. I don't know what to take of this other than if this is what overspeed is, it's not really fast. In fact we reacted a lot more than we acted. |

I only got the last 10 minutes of the game, but judging from the score and what I saw in those last 10, I must agree. Joey Mac played a nice game. Glad to see we didn't lack between the pipes tonight. Can someone answer these questions for me... 1- On Elias' goal, wtf was Martinek doing? Comrie was covering for a dman who got caught deep. Fine. He's no dman, but he forced the guy with the puck wide into a poor angle towards the corner...exactly what he should do. Ytf is Martinek leaving Elias to put his stick shaft flat on the ice to block a shot/pass from a terrible angle? The guy is a vet and should know to take the man in front. He didn't. He played the pass, which they teach you on a 2 v 2 drill in peewees NOT TO DO. He left Elias wide open on top of the crease and he bangs in a rebound. I am sick of Isles dmen doing that. For two seasons I've been killing Campoli and Gervais for doing it. They both constantly leave their feet (AND THE MAN IN THE SLOT) to try to block passes and be a hero and now Martinek is doing that crap. STOP IT!!!!! 2- yTF were Franz and Tambelini on the ice with a minute to go in the game? I ask because those two took a shift that could only be described as SOFTER THAN WHAT COMES OUT OF TOM CARVEL'S MACHINE!!! We were down by a goal with 1 minute to go, the Devs bring the puck deep in our zone with only one Dev in our zone. What did Tambelini and Franz do? They acted like they were KILLING A PENALTY. Both Tamby and Franz had chances to ty up the Dev with the puck so an Isles could pick it up. Instead, they back off and let the same Devs player rag the puck in our zone for 30 of the final 60 seconds. I don't know how these two played for the first 59 minutes, but I hope Gordon ripped them both for failing to take the body at a critical moment in the game. That is the type of soft play I saw from Tamby CONSTANTLY in his callups last year and it is the thing that would have kept me from giving him more ice time. JMHO |

I didn't see Bergie touch the ice in the last two minutes. Unless I missed him, I'd be looking in that direction. If you want to say "its the first game" and/or "kids gotta learn by doing"...fine. But someone better pull those two aside on the busride back tonight and say, "that $h!+ can never happen again. Take the body or take a seat". Make that LESSON NUMBER ONE in their nhl development. |

Yea, i don't know what is what but Frans was playing like it was period 1 and there was a whole game to go..thatll show up on tape for sure... the first month is really Gordons opportunity to show what he's got as far as making the young guys learn from their mistakes. |

okay I just got home from the game..some points I want to make.. 1. We should have won that game. The Post saved Marty once. If K.O Hadn't lost it on that penalty shot..If Marty didn't make that save in the 3rd we win 4-2. Sure, that is alot of would haves could haves and whatnot...But I don't think it was as bad as it looked. 2. Marty is Better? Is that all Devil fans can muster? I can't wait till he retires, because that is all they got. Joey Mac our backup played a great game in my opinion. What was he 27 of 29? and that second goal? was a fluke anyway. He's my boy I'm proud of him. 3. Our power play STILL SUCKS. Although I tip my well worn cap to Mark Streit and Bill Guerin for setting up Dougie Weight on that PP goal. Finally, Big ups to everyone in section 116, 117 tonight we did our best to piss off devil fans with our LETS GO ISLANDERS chants and we took some verbal abuse (This guy kept calling me fat and offering me peanut M&Ms now normally if no one was looking...I might have *wink wink*. But I want to thank the guy in 117 with the Devils jersey on and the dumb goatee for stating the obvious. Yes I am fat. Yes I need to lose weight. Yes you had a bag of peanut M&Ms and based on stats, Marty Brodeur is a better goalie than Joey Mac.. Last but not least...I treated myself to a bowl of Wendy's Chili just because we scored a freaking goal tonite.. |

Right On Time.

A few things I took from tonight... 1) Very nice job by MacDonald. Nothing more, nothing less. 2) Sim was our best player. I really thought I would like him and what I pictured was what we got tonight. Double-digit goals, crash the net, PP or PK guy, I like him. 3) Didn't like the way Radek looked or played at all. I am a big supporter of Radek. One game of course, but just going off one game. 4) One of the most ho-hom slow games. Both sides. It was really weird, very few (posts, penalty shot) stand up momments. 5) After scoring a goal, the next few minutes are so Fing crucial and we don't even play 50 seconds and we take a penalty and than allow a goal. 6) So many guys seem like the same type of player, a little under-sized, not dominant in any attribute, make one rush, turn the puck over, etc. |

WISENHEIMER

My take on our first live TV look at our Isles under Gordon. I am not impressed overall. Positives: Joey Macs goaltending. Sitting DP. Streit had a decent game and looks like a solid pickup. Powerplay looked like it's a work in progress and much better setup/strategy. Trent Hunter's grit, Jon Sim HEALTHY, Doug Weight, overall teams face-off ability. Richard Park's determination to make something happen. Tambellini, YES Tambellini's defensive game. I was pleasantly surprised to see him finally pick up his check on his side of the red line and on a ouple of occasions when Joey Mac was bullrushed in the crease, Tambs was one of the first to get in the face rub action. Negatives: Offense is offensive with it's impotence. The timid and anemic play of Nielsen and Tambellini on a few shifts tells me they were busy watching and waiting for the more experienced Devils to do something instead of getting in there and making it happen on offence. That's confidence. I hope they work that out because defensively they seemed to work better. Brendan Witt. yes, the guy so many Isles fans, media and management call a warrior is on my last nerve. 2 more times he screens our goalie by standing dead in his tracks and trying to block a shot instead of stepping up and forcing a play. But this stuff is easy to overlook when your team wins. We lost so pardon y whining. rookie coach Gordon. Yes, your system is a work in progress but any system that is supposed to be upbeat should NOT find you BADLY outhit by games end. From what i saw we were outhit 2 to 1. Anyone have the hit stats? Overall, I know this will a long season. But I really want to see our youth look LESS "off-balance" in the offensive zone but credit Sutter and the Devs on this one and lets tip our caps to Martin Brodeur. |

For a first game, this one was not so bad. Here are the positives as I see them: * Streit is head-and-shoulders above Bergeron/Berard and that will make a big difference on the PP. He can actually drag the puck and made some difficult skill passes that CONNECTED. It was a pleasure to watch. * Hillen was also impressive - I liked that he went after Langenbrunner when he crashed the net. * Sim was one of the few to go to the net on a consistent basis. It will be good to see him play more this year and bring some jam with him. * Tambellini had some chances by going to the net. I did not see that from him last year. He needs to do more of it. * Joey Mac was solid. I didn't like the way they let Dubie go, but for 1 day at least, it didn't make a difference. On another note: What exactly did Thompson bring? Put in Comeau and push Comrie to center. |
