That is EXACTLY what happened. If you watched the game, you would have noticed that after that second goal for Montreal, the Islanders...especially their kids, went into panic mode. They quit forechecking and they were running around completely undisciplined in their own end. That isn't the coach telling them to do that. Why would you change what was so successful for 40 minutes for the last 20? No way Gordon told them to go into a shell to start the 3rd. That is just crazy talk. |

Hmmm, ok, I read alot of stuff in here. Tonight, this "system" worked ok for 2 periods because the habs took us lightly. They turn it up in the 3rd and we stopped hitting stopped trying doing the little things WITHOUT the puck stopped forechecking So we lose a tough one and this is where confidence (as fragile as it is now) goes from bad to worse Time for vets to take hold of this team. As disgusting as it may be to drop a game with a 3 goal lead in the 3rd, the signs that system can work if you have good enough players that can sustain it for 60 minutes. But the problem was, this system was also supposed to help us be competitive now. 2-7-1.

Yes. They sat on their lead and stopped forechecking. They started to take penalties. They killed the power plays, but they took themselves out of the offense. The Habs took complete control of the game and the Isles just crumbled. Like I4C, I doubt Gordon said in the intermission: Okay guys, we have a 3 goal lead, the third period is optional, so show up if you like. I do have a suspicion that this game illustrates a potential problem with The System at the NHL level, but that is merely a hypothesis and I hope it turns out completely wrong. |

hate to rain on the parade steve but it is keeping us competitive now. we've won two. lost 4 by one goal, lost 7 by two goals or less, and we've been blown out in one game. i'd say that if in all 8 losses if 7 were by two goals or less you're a competitive team. especially considering the "talent" on D this year. letting in the 4 goals last night night was a bunch of kids that got nervous and couldn't get out of their own way. Let me ask you this: with these games as they were and if we had a healthy DP, do you really think some of those 2 and 1 goal losses might have gone into OT? |

Healthy DP or not, I think the results are the exact same or hardly any better. The dynamic changes drastically in having DP in there with him handling (or over handling) the puck. But ask yourself this...how many "LEADS" have our Isles had in games this season? I look for signs like fundamentals. Too many games our youth skate by the opposition and wave a stick at them intsead of following through with a shoulder. Competitive to me means you give yourself a chance to win. When you have poor percentage shots you're not going to give yourself a chance to win, nor are you competitive. I won't stop watching tho. Felt good to see Nielsen get a goal, see Streit get one against his former mates and ESPECIALY Guy Carbonneau who my good habs fan bud from up north told me jerked him around last year. Felt great fro 2 periods. Then a collapse. It happens. Hope it doesn't become a habit but good teams find a way to win or gve themselves a chance to. Bad teams find a way to lose. We are the latter. |

I guess it all boils down to do we wanna win games or the lottery? Me, I'd rather win games, but win or lose, you can't tell me these games are boring. Disappointing maybe, but not boring  |

Just saw this rereading this thread. I've been barking about this for some time. Hope he puts some muscle on and gets his head programmed for fundamental hockey. That crap may fly under the radar in the AHL because the game isn't as fast. Mistakes usually bite you in the ass in the NHL. Still, lets hope the goal he got makes him work harder and focus and grow as a player. We're stuck with him.

Bring back...PRIDE OF THE ISLAND
|
just a question to you...but how many games have you watched from the Islanders and not seen them play a full 60 minutes...this game was not the coaches fault or the damn goalies fault, danis belongs in the ahl, it was the teams fault. they gave up, sat back. lets keep firing coaches, and not let the players be held accountable...this team is pathetic and so is the freaken management. I'm so sick and tired of the same crap...I actually enjoyed slapping that habs fan, I pushed them two times before the slap. I really wanted a fight. I was stupid. An idiot. I let my pathetic team get the worse of me. You're not suppose to enjoy hitting someone...that is just wrong. But I did. It felt sooooo good. |

I was. And as many as there were, and as loud as they were, I'd take them and their pure love for their team and the sport over a coliseum full of rag or philly fans anyday. |

Totally agree Webby, while they were 10x louder then any ranger fan contingent at recent games their love for the team came out not the hatred of Islander fans. |

DP has hardly played this year so this makes no sense. How is he to blame?!? The nightmare has only just begun. |

Sorry that I'm late on this one, but this can be considered a RANT. And I admit I didn't read every previous post on this thread so if it was covered... How can professional hockey players commit the same mistake not once, not twice, not three times BUT FOUR TIMES IN ONE PERIOD OF HOCKEY??????? In every case, all three of our down low guys were looking at the puck in the corner while a Canadian set up high. EVERY TIME. AND THEY SCORED FOUR CONSECUTIVE GOALS BY DOING IT. THAT IS NOT THE COACH, THE SYSTEM, THE RINK, THE FOOD, THE SKATES THE WHATEVER. THAT IS THE PLAYERS FAULT. I'VE SEEN MITES BE MORE DISCIPLINED AND PLAY A BETTER BRAND OF HOCKEY THAN THESE MUTTS DID AGAINST THE HABS. AND WE BLEW A 4-1 LEAD AND LOST. Okay, my rant is over and I fell better. And can we please get Comrie the hell out of here? |
