A word about Joey MacDonald
Most figured the loss of goaltender Rick DiPietro for up to six weeks following his second knee surgery this year two weeks ago would be an absolute death blow to the Islanders' season. But backup Joey MacDonald has risen to the occasion even if the won-loss record doesn't prove it.

MacDonald was more the victim of the Islanders' recent third-period meltdowns than he was the cause. He finally got rewarded in the Islanders' 3-1 victory Thursday night in Ottawa but only because of a heroic effort on his part and that of the Isles' penalty killers.

After the Isles took a 3-1 lead on Bill Guerin's goal at 2:31 of the third, MacDonald denied two point-blank attempts by Antoine Vermette from right of the crease. Then, the Islanders put him under even more pressure because of a delay of game penalty on Mark Streit, a high-sticking penalty on Andy Sutton and a five-minute game misconduct on Thomas Pock with 4:16 left in the game.

The Senators gained a two-man advantage on that final power play when goaltender Alex Auld left the ice with 1:42 remaining, and a slashing penalty on Richard Park made it a three-man advantage for the last 45.2 seconds. MacDonald, who made 29 saves, stopped everything, including a blistering one-timer in the slot from close range by Chris Neil. The Isles' defense also blocked 11 shots for the game and four in the third period.

"It made things interesting," MacDonald said. "Our penalty kill was pretty good tonight. We saw a lot of shots, and we continued to block a lot of shots. That always helps. I thought we played a complete 60 minutes tonight."

In his previous outing, MacDonald gave up only two goals to Philadelphia but suffered a loss when the Islanders' power play went 0-for-8. In four of the five prior games, the Islanders blew third-period leads of at least two goals while going 1-2-1 in the games where they gave up the lead, inlcuding one game with Yann Danis in goal.

"We could have been 3-1 or 4-0," MacDonald said, referring to those lost leads. "Tonight, we played the full 60 minutes and won, 3-1. It doesn't matter if you play 50 minutes, you can still lose the hockey game."

MacDonald now has a 5-6-2 record. It includes one loss in which he gave up seven goals to Buffalo when DiPietro was backing up but not used and another loss in which MacDonald played the final two periods in relief of DiPietro. In MacDonald's 13 appearances, he has yielded two goals or less six times, three goals four times and four-plus goals three times. That means he's essentially give the Islanders a chance to win 10 of those 13 games. Not bad.

In his six straight starts since DiPietro underwent surgery, MacDonald has allowed only 14 goals. Even better.

The Islanders now know they have someone in net who is capable of holding the fort until DiPietro gets healthy.

ISLES INSIDER: This week's edition of Islanders Insider focuses on how the franchise got in the position of rebuilding by its mistakes in previous drafts and how it's moving forward by relying on the current crop of young kids to build. Please click here to check it out.

Couldn't agree more. Joey Mac has more than held down the fort. He and Trent Hunter have been playing better, more consistent hockey than anyone else wearing an Isles uni and are the only ones who should even be considered for repping the team in the all-star game. It will be Hunter, but Joey's play does merit a look.

As I've been saying, this team's problem isn't between the pipes. Hopefully, the kids will progress and our D will play firmer in front of Joey.

I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

77, that's quite the observation. In 4-6 weeks when DP is set to return, what would happen if Big Mac became so popular to the fans that DP feels like the outsider?

MacDonald has certainly made people forget about Dubie.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

DP would have MacDonald traded :bag:
