Speaking of Joe Michelletti, if anyone tuned into the rangers-capitals game 2 weeks ago.
Joe was at his all time best or should I say worst with his "I-know-it-all" nonsense.

An Alexander Semin shot deflected of Burger Queen back up against the glass,
came down off the top of the net/cross bar, off Lundqueens head and then hit Brooks Laich and went in.

Joe Michelletti screamed his displeasure with the officials saying the puck went "straight up in the air and hit the netting" and play should have ben called dead.

6 friggin times they showed the replay and the bastid couldn't figure it out that the puck hit
about a 2 feet below the glass before coming down and it didn't go "straight up in the air".
Finally, he was corrected and humbled. How the hell was it clear to me on the initial play?
I was screaming at the set. "You dumb bastid"

This was one of the reasons I hated the guy. So adamant about his calls.
Later that 1st period another goal was scored and it was reviewed and the moron couldn't figure out why. The net had been dislodged a bit before a goal was scored.

If he spent more time observing and less time trying to talk through colon his hockey smarts would make him easier to tolerate.

Funny, I feel that way about Jaffe. Besides, talking WAY too much on simple points, he always disagrees or corrects Howie when he makes a comment. Like he is some know-it-all. At least Micheletti played and coached in the NHL. Jaffe has no business acting like that. It's annoying. Howie and Joe had much better chemistry

And there's no way Michelletti talks more than Jaffe. I sometimes think Jaffe gets paid by the word. Talks forever and says nothing

I think Jaffe's hockey smarts bring great insight to the inquisitive non athlete perspective of one Howie Rose.

Michelletti misses WAY too much and backtracks. Jaffe is dead on.

For my taste, Jaffe is far more knowledgeable than Joe Michelletti who makes scores of judgemental
errors where he miscalls a play and screams incessantly only to backtrack after viewing more replays.

I sure as hell don't miss Michelletti ending every single call with a question:

Joe Michelletti:

"...you know Howie, that was a cheap shot by McCabe, I mean he really threw a high elbow didn't he?"

"yeah Howie, that Campoli kid is having a great game, I mean he's playing great isn't he?"

"Boy, that puck sure looked like it crossed the line didn't it? I mean it looked over the line to me. Sure.
yeaaaaah, that puck sure looked in didn't it?"

Thank you Billy Jaffe, tuning into a Ranger broadcast now is more annoying than hearing the debacle that was Phil Esposito back in the 80's thanks to Joe M's flubs!

I judge a good broadcaster by the ability to know when to let the game speak for itself and when things need to be pointed out. Michelletti was great at that. One example I use is if I was at a game, would I want to sit next to this guy. I don't need a broadcaster to explain every angle of every play, just like I don't want the guy next to me explain everything that's going on. If Jaffe was next to me, I'd probably jam a sharp object in my ears by the first intermission.

One time last year, Bergenheim scored a goal into basically, an empty net. Jaffe took about 1000 words to describe how "patient he was with puck. Watch how he doesn't rush the shot. He takes the puck and steadies himself while keeping his head up, his body centered to the net, :blah: :blah: :blah:

THE GUY WAS SHOOTING AT AN OPEN NET! At that point, I screamed, "shut up, already." It wasn't like he's describing a breakaway. Then I can see disecting it. Jaffe disects EVERYTHING.

Michelletti's gotta be doing something right if he's one of the first choices for national broadcasts.

correction, I remember that call, earlier in the game Bergenheim was off-balance and missed roofing a shot because the pass was in his feet and was basically covered when he got control. Hmm, could that have been why Jaffe went out of his way to explain?

Look to each his own. I agree, i hate havig the know-it-all next to me at a game who talks out of his ass. Jaffe knows hockey just as Michelletti.

Oh yeah, and...
Have you watched VS National broadcasts?
can't find Michelletti there.

Maybe but it's not a one time thing. He does it all the time.

Agreed. To each his own.

Also, can we really consider Versus a national broadcast? I still have trouble finding it on my cable system

Not that I miss JD at all whatsoever, but he was annoying because of his arrogance and that he was all about the Rangers. Micheletti is annoying for very different reasons, mainly that he's a complete sellout. In a matter of 6 months he went from being Joe Islander who would rip the Rangers every chance he got to becoming Mr. Ranger and now every thing they do is the greatest thing hockey has ever seen. The guy is a good color guy when he does games nationally, but my god is he annoying with Rosen.

As for Jaffe, he's a tad bit homerish but overall he's a very good play by play guy. Because he's so young, I feel like he won't be doing Islander broadcasts for very long and he'll wind up getting a better job over the next few years. Glad he's here though, and I hope I'm wrong about that.

Good riddance because that Hockey Night Live show especially on Saturdays was brutal. Ya had that Bon Jovi wannabe pretty boy Duguay making no sense at all, marble mouth Daneyko tripping over his toungue, Trautwig or Deb trying to hold it together and failing miserably and Butch talking up the lousy Isles.

MSG live show blew too. It was a commercial for MSG with a few highlights/analysis in between.

Get Deb back on Isles broadcasts because........she kinda resembles Christy Canyon without the um great assets.

I can't stand Micheletti's over used line:
"He's so Big and Strong"

He says that about every player. Ever notice that? Not as bad a Chico Resh adding an E to everyone's name (Marti Broduer, Mikey Milbury etc..) but annoying all the same.

My version of a MSG hockey broadcast

Sam Rosen: Thats a great save by Lundquvist
Joe Mic: Yes Sam, very good save.

Sam Rosen: Dubinsky scores on a great rising shot.
Joe Mic: What a shot by Dubinsky, as it rises past the goalies shoulder.

It seems like whatever Sam Rosen says, Joe Mic has to repeat it. It sounds like my TV has an echoing problem.

And the only time Ive seen Joe Mic on a National Broadcast was on NBC like 3 years ago. In case you didnt notice, not only did Billy Jaffe was a bench/sideline (u would say???) reporter during the whole 08 playoffs, he also did the Cup Finals on VS. and NBC..

So I guess he sux??

Of all the personnel moves that MSG makes, removing Joe M and replacing him with Jaffe was by far the best move for Islander fans.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Now see, that's my point. Your example is not 100% accurate because Micheletti doesn't use one sentence responses like that all the time but if Henrik makes a great save, there shouldn't be 1000 words after it. I JUST SAW IT AND THERE WILL A REPLAY!!!! You just need a quick comment to convey the emotion of the moment. Was it a tie game in the third? Then a emotional, short comment followed by the fans cheering is all I need. Jaffe would start describing it with 1000 words and use 1000 more words on the replay. And it's not just Jaffe. Watch all the football commentators on Sunday. They show a replay and they explain what's happening in the replay. I'M WATCHING IT! You don't need to tell me what I'm already watching. It's like watching a movie and imagine if the guy next to you is going, "watch joe pesci take out the gun. He has the gun in his hand. he's shooting that guy. He's shooting that guy in the head! Watch it again. He takes the gun..." You'd be like, "Dude, I can see it." That's what it is like watching sports announcers nowadays. Modern announcers feel they need talk and talk and talk. Focus on the things I'm not aware of at the moment. What happened in practice, what the player works on, what are his strengths/weaknesses to make the save or not make the save. That what I looking for. Or just let the game speak for itself once in a while. I feel Micheletti does that.

As far as national broadcasts, the guy has worked (doing games and off ice) for FOX, NBC, ESPN, Olympic coverage and not to mention the number one hockey franchise in the number one media market. I'd say that's a pretty good resume and points to his repsect around the league.

And don't get me wrong. I'm not saying Jaffe sux. There are a lot of color guys who are much worse. He's just following in an annoying trend of announcers today.

The reason for the color men is for the casual fan, who does not understand the game at what would be a basic default level on any hockey board. While they both know their stuff well, Jaffe(who does talk a lot) managed to work in reference to Howie being a tool. He can be entertaining, which is why he has a higher ceiling than Micheletti.
If you went to the game as his buddy, you would just tell him to shut up for a while.
I vote we keep Jaffe, and trade CJ for Deb.

Ok Ok Joe Mic uses 3 sentences..AT THE MOST...but whatever he says he repeats what Sam Rosen says...thats my point.

Billy Jaffe actually enlightens us to the game. Thats the difference between the two.

I feel like Billy gives you the perspective of the game from a former player's vantage point.

Joe not only repeats Sam, but he repeats HIMSELF.

Jaffe is really good. I've liked him from Day 1. Joe M is still Joe M. He's just getting criticized because he's with NYR now. Davidson was the worst homer overrated color guy ever. I couldn't stand him.

It's just a matter of time before Howie Rose and Joe M are reunited again because the day after S Rosen retires, Howie will take the NYR announcer job. Won't that be weird having both former NYI announcers working for NYR?

I agree that davidson was really annoying when he "put his ranger jersey on" while calling a game but he was, hands down, the BEST color guy in the business. It's not really close. Half the league have guys trying to imitate him, like Madden in football.

These types of comparisons are subjective, but despite early misgivings, I've grown to genuinely like Bill Jaffe's work as the Islanders' color commentator, and I do think that he's doing better work now than Joe Micheletti did during his stint with the Isles.

Jaffe's doing a very fine job at two essential color commentator tasks---bringing a player's perspective to the game (sharing his technical expertise at appropriate points) and bringing a sense of humor and personality to the game (balancing the telecast with the play-by-play guy, who has the grueling job of correctly reporting the action as it occurs for nearly 5,000 minutes every season).

When Jaffe first showed up, I wasn't pleased by the hiring of a non-NHL player, and one who didn't have prior experience with the club. With Goring, Potsy, Flats and others out there, I thought we could have done better, and frowned at the set for awhile. However, after repeated watchings, I realized that in practically every game, or at least every other game, Jaffe shares some technical detail that I had not previously noticed, whether it's faceoff positioning, certain reliable bounces off the wacky Coliseum boards, or interesting details of opposing teams' systems. That's real value added to the somewhat repetitive business of broadcasting Isles hockey games---18 sure wasn't into that stuff and Joe Mic simply didn't offer it that often. (Listening to him, I find myself doubting that Joe really played in the NHL and WHA like the 'ol book says---where are the interesting observations that would distinguish his work from the usual print reporter or a play-by-play guy?? He's great at reporting groin injuries, tho. ;) )

On the subject of humor and personality, Jaffe tweaks Rose during the broadcasts, which is a generational thing, and also somewhat fun, since Rose, the former Ranger fan, has the tough job of carrying on for Jiggs, and I'm only really getting used to the guy in what, his 14th season on the job. Incidentally, Rose has done so well in a tough spot over the years, I'm going to quite sincerely miss the guy if he does move to the Rangers. Not sure whether Rose likes getting teased by Jaffe; I rather suspect sometimes he doesn't.

Yes, Jaffe could do better by saying less (hmm, something that applies to most of my posts as well). But that's a younger broadcaster's practice that I'm confident will diminish in time.

PS I liked watching Jaffe work with Jiggs---it seemed he was earnestly trying to win Jiggs' confidence, and gaining his trust, only occasionally talking over him. I'm not a Mets fan, and I do think Howie Rose does a good job, but I root for the Mets to make the playoffs so we get a few more games with Jiggs each season.
