Tim Jackman impressed me last season, but this season he seems even better. All people have been talking about is getting an enforcer who can play the game? We already have him. No need to have Fritz on the roster. Jackman should be in the lineup every night.
I like the way he's playing but he is not a good fighter. Plus, he's more of a middleweight. If he had to fight the Cotes, Laraques, Orrs, etc, he'd be dead. We still need a heavyweight who can play a little. It hasn't hurt us so far though.
He's not a good fighter, but at the current stage of the NHL you don't need to be to still be effective. You need a guy who will stand up for teammates and also be able to play the game. If there is a big rivalry game and it's needed, call up Fritz. But as far as being an every single game option, Jackman is a good one. He's a better player than Colton Orr. And besides, as long as he's not intimidated by the top enforcers around the league that's the important thing.
Agreed on Jackman being a better every game option but you have to make people pay for taking cheap shots. It's really not make someone pay when Jackman challenges them and gets his ass kicked (see the salvador fight). You need a heavyweight to put fear in people, especially other big guys. Asham was a good middleweight enforcer because he could take a regular shift and fight well enough to make people pay.
ASHAM WAS THE MAN TILL WE REALIZED HIS HANDS WERE MADE OF CLAY ONE GOOD FIGHT HIS KNUCKLES WERE DONE AND HAD TO TAPE THEM UP AND YOU CANT FIGHT WITH THEM TAPED SO HE BECAME USELESS IN THE FIGHT DEPT BUT HE DID FIGHT TO KILL

Oz, who's to say he wont get there. He was determined to improve his skating and it's paid off. He can take a regular shift and provide some chaos for the other team, and , most importantly, is willing to stand up and drop them. Maybe a few more fights and he improves there too. You have to admit he's filling a void we've had for a while and doing a pretty good job.
Honestly, Jackman reminds me of Gary Howatt. Not due to size. When Howatt was first with the Isles he wasn't a guy who had skill. He just worked hard all the time. Sometimes he looked like he skated in socks only...like Jackman. But like Jackman, he worked on his skating with Deb Williams (powerskating) over at the old Racquet and Rink w/ Nystrom and Gillies and Howatt became a serviceable 4th line forward who would drop his gloves with anyone. And as those Isles teams of the 70's improved, so did Howatt. By the time the cups came, Howatt's role diminished as the team no longer needed to prove its toughness on a nightly basis and other guys like Matt's Halin and Billy Carroll took his PT. As teams improve, guys like Howatt either have to improve or will get cut. Same will be with Jackman. He will either improve or lose his spot as this team improves. But as you start building, you need those guys who bring it every night. AND YOU WANT THEM becuase one of the biggest lessons they provide to the kid that takes their roster spot is..."to get my spot, you'll need to bring it every night".
I4C, thats pretty sad...hmpf, I guess thats the life of an average hockey player , kind of makes you want to root for that type of guy just a little bit harder.
I liked your comparisons to older Islanders, it makes this Islander fan understand just a little, of what goes on with the game.

Tim Jackman will never score thirty goals. He will never dance around three guys and roof a backhand winner. He will never make the all star team, or be league or even team MVP. He will never get the headlines. He will never get start treatment.
All he will do is bring the best he has to offer, game in, game out. And he will stand up for his teammates and show the scars to prove it.
He can play on my team any day.
And I'd make sure I found a spot for him, somehow, some way.
