NIELSEN OUT 8-12 WKS

Devils defenseman Mike Mottau received two games from the NHL for his elbow to the head of Islanders center Frans Nielsen Friday night at the Prudential Center. Nielsen received 8-12 weeks on the injured list -- a span of up to 36 games -- from Mottau's reckless action.

The uneven hand of NHL justice strikes again.

The Islanders are describing Nielsen as having "multiple leg injuries." However, he did not sustain a concussion when the back of his head hit the ice following the hit from Mottau.

No formal statement is expected from the organization regarding the slap on the wrist Mottau received from the league just eight days after Islanders defenseman Thomas Pock was hit with a five-game suspension for his elbow to the head of Ottawa's Ryan Shannon. Earlier today, coach Scott Gordon said Nielsen was the Islanders' "best player" in the 5-2 loss to the Devils.

Now, the team could be without Nielsen's services for close to half a season. If he is out the full 12 weeks, Nielsen would not return until around Feb. 14 when the isles meet Philadelphia.

In the meantime, Gordon said rookie Josh Bailey will take Nielsen's spot as second-line center with Jeff Tambellini and Trent Hunter. Emergency callup Jeremy Colliton likely will play a fourth-line role.

billy jaffe said their was only a two game suspension cause their was no contact made....he left his feet and clearly made contact. Colin Cambell is either the dumbest man on the face of the earth, or...wait this is no other reason for this absolute abortion of a decision.

Wow. I'd like to see some kind of response by the organization about the 2 game suspension because Nielsen is paying for Mottau cheap hit. Mottau not a dirty player? As Botta said, he is now. I kind of wish Tomahawk was still on the team. I would cheer if Mottau's head was on the other end of his stick.

Just as Nielson was winning me over. Best hockey of his Isle career the past couple weeks this happens. What pisses me off the most is 2 game suspension. And why is Fritz on the team if we don't use him in this situation. Can't score and not allowed to protect his teammates. Might as well bring up someone else. No disrespect to Fritz but I was really looking forward to seeing him throw some hands last nite. What is his role on the team? To just grimace at people from the bench. I disagree strongly with Gordon on this one. We needed to send a strong message.

gordon explained after the game, that fritz was cold hadn't been playing up to that point, and it was wrong to put him in that situation. where everyone would know he would drop them, jaffe and rose apparently agreed. :dontknow: :blah:

I wrote on my blog the league needs to revisit how it hands down suspensions. They need some type of sliding scale because they obviously can not hand suspensions down fairly. Pock gets 5 games and Mottau only 2? Something is terribly wrong there. I would love to hear COLON reasoning.

exactly so when will he be "warmed up". when will he play? I am confused of his role? its not to be an enforcer obviously. so if he doesn't take a regular shift he will be cold so when will he be able to take the ice. sorry i think its a cop out and he should be allowed to do his job. Not deliberately start a fight but just to let teams know he is out there and they can't take liberties.

i agree with you. fritz needed to be used to take care of his teammates and show the opp., and the league that the islanders are not to be pushed around.

but...so close to the end of the game, it might've made the islanders look worse for it. jmo

they will have other games against the devils, as said by jaffe or rose. They will remember this and take care of next game. :dontknow:

According to Jaffe, Garth Snow called the Colin Campbell and this is what he got

"Mottau didnt make enough contact with the head."

They should not revisit their suspension policy. They need to revisit the stupidity of Collie The Clown. When Burke was the Dean of Discipline, you never had the illogic and inconsistent judgements handed down now. And its all over the league - its not just us.

We all come here and try to explain the illogical. It can't be done. No sense in explaining this nonsense: "He didn't make contact with the head." What the hell is he watching? Bettman needs to remove Collie The Clown from this position and hire Burke before he gets another position. Collie The Clown is an EMBARASSMENT.

from cbssportline.com

This season, the rising concern in the NHL has been hits to the head and last night's hit by New Jersey Devils defenseman Mike Mottau on Islanders winger Frans Nielsen was a prime example.

Nine days ago, Islander defenseman Thomas Pock elbowed Ottawa Senators forward Ryan Shannon and received a five minute major penalty, a game misconduct, and a five game suspension that's still being served.

The calls for change came around a month before that when Islander Doug Weight leveled Carolina Hurricane Brandon Sutter giving him a concussion. Weight went unpunished. And Devil coach Brent Sutter a former Islander and Brandon's father had this to say on Weight's hit:

"I'm not blaming anybody, but I know firsthand a check like that wouldn't have happened 20 years ago because you know what the consequences would've been."

This comes from a man who when he captained the Islanders in the 1990 playoffs failed to respond when his teammate and star Pat LaFontaine was knocked unconscious by Ranger James Patrick. The only quote after the game was from Mike Vukota a born-again Christian.

Colin Campbell handed Mottau a two game suspension for his hit on Nielsen (breaking news Nielsen is out 8-12 WEEKS with multiple leg injuries) and the referees Dave Jackson and Dan O'Rourke gave Mottau a two minute minor and when Trent Hunter came after Mottau he received a two, five, and ten. (minor for instigating, five for fighting, ten minute misconduct)

These two things are where I believe that all the stuff the NHL has been saying it will do about hits to the head is a JOKE.

Campbell gives Mottau a slap on the wrist for leaving his knees and elbowing Nielsen in a game in which Nielsen was playing one of his most complete games in the season. When Islander GM Garth Snow talked to Campbell about the hit today Campbell stated that he didn't see Mottau hit Nielsen in the head in any of the videos.

Complete and total lie.

Those two referees Jackson and O'Rourke are also jokes. They see a teammate come to defense of his linemate and penalize him when stuff like this happens all the time. Hunter didn't instigate the fight since Mottau's hit caused the whole incident and since he didn't instigate the fight he shouldn't have gotten the misconduct.

I'm going to stop now since this is pissing me off alot to know that Campbell and Sutter are hypocrites.
