1:00 pm - That pretty much sums it up. Last Wednesday, Scott Gordon thought Kyle Okposo might be ready to play in 2-3 days. Now, Okposo - who had what the team termed a “hand injury” - is out 4-6 weeks with a sprained wrist.

Does this surprise anyone? Is that 4-6 weeks from today or when he first injured it?

I've said it before.....days turn into weeks, weeks turn into months. I guess this means Nielsen is really going to be out for a year.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

That sucks. Not that KO was lighting the lamp so far but can we call up an offensive player from bridgeport for the month and not another Mitch Fritzish type? Comeau anyone? I'd like to see this guy Trevor Smith play.

That sucks. Like Bailey, he wasn't setting the world on fire but was getting better every game and was a blast to watch.

Oh well, better he gets it fixed before it becomes anything worse or recurs.

Jeez, we're like a friggin' MASH unit....

NEVER SEEN A TEAM LIKE THIS

IF WE EVER GO THRU A DAY WITHOUT SOMEBODY BEING OUT
THE NHL WOULD HAVE TO ORDER DRUG TESTING

Time to think.

Remember when Garth publicly criticized Okposo's college coach?
They rushed to get him out of college, to the Bridge and up here.
I whined about him staying there to finish the year, play a full year at the Bridge and then bring him up slowly.

I also whine about Bailey. Who, despite giving us some semblance of excitement with his play.
has a long way to go. But I still disagree with my favorite ( Jaffe ) on Bailey. He should have been sent back. Same may happen to him too. This team will level off and I don't see .500 on it's horizon. A winning environment would have been better with a taste of the NHL.

Let these kids develop slowly. Don't rush, don't rush to market, don't rush to dream.
We have and now this. Could happen to any player, but in this environment, when so MANY players have been injured, at what point do we ask, why? Bad luck? Bad preparation? Fatigue? Curse? WTF?

It's frustrating. But at the very least an opportunity opens now for someone else to shine.

Fatigue? He's 20. I got concert T-shirts older than him.

This team is cursed, it's the hockey Gods paying us back for so much success so soon so long ago.

With all these injuries one must wonder if we need a new strength and conditioning coach. Because the current guy doesn't seem to be getting the job done.

I disagree. Guys can get hurt whether they be at the AHL, NCAA or NHL level. It isn't like KO is overwhelmed physically. He has an injury. Happens to many people.

As for our role in bringing up KO from UMinn, I don't buy that it was us "making" him come to the Island. KO had been on the news in Minn and said he wasn't happy there. That is no secret. I'm inclined to believe that KO knew what was waiting for him if he left and decided to do that.

JMHO

Additionally, Towes, Kane, Mueller are all players that made the jump to the NHL straight from juniors or one year of college. Plenty of the top picks do. I don't think this is a problem for Bailey.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

Ultimately, with college hockey already ravaged by early departures over the summer, the concern is whether this sets a precedent and whether this indicates any disdain from Snow in particular for the college game.

"Kyle was back in college (this year) because of Garth Snow's belief in college hockey," the source said. "So I don't believe Garth is against college hockey. (But) what Garth says, that's Garth talking."

New York Islanders General Manager Garth Snow on Thursday criticized Don Lucia's coaching, saying that was the reason sophomore Kyle Okposo is leaving the Gophers hockey program and negotiating a contract with the Islanders.

"Quite frankly, we weren't happy with the program there," Snow said in a telephone interview. "They have a responsibility to coach, to make Kyle a better player, and they were not doing that."

Re: bailey.
Take a look at the OTHER teams where "Towes, Kane, Mueller" play and you'll find stability in coaching (Gretzky) or depth and talent on the roster.

We have unprovens. But yes, rebuild and market the heck outta them.
Say it enough times, post an article on main website enough times and maybe it sticks.

This is why I still cannot fully trust Snow. I just cannot.

This statement is what I'm referring to...

Quote:

Okposo's decision to leave was announced by the team Wednesday afternoon. Lucia said then in a released statement that, "it is unfortunate that the Islanders put him in a very difficult position."

This an other comments were made by coach Lucia BEFORE Garth even made a public comment about KO turning pro. Lucia blasted Snow and the Isles organization first. Then he acts hurt and dumbfounded when Snow responds??? Please.

I don't pretend to know all the particulars of what went on in that situation, but what I do know is 4 other NHL teams including Buffalo and the Habs signed college kids who left school during the NCAA season and none of those coaches went ballistic or criticized the nhl team.

Lucia threw the first stone, then he and his AD said they were "dumbfounded" by Snow's comments. (its in the article) Really? Someone responds negatively to your negative comment and you are dumbfounded? I doubt the people of Minnesota are so nice that it borders on naive.

Also, I head read from that same Minnesota newspaper at the time of the event that KO had made it clear to the local media that he wasn't happy there and wished he had turned pro after his freshmen year. He wasn't happy with being moved to center amongst other things. How much did the Islanders really have to do with that?

Honestly, if the Islanders were trying to push the kid to turn pro, wouldn't they have gotten him to sign over the summer rather than in November?

as for Bailey...you mentioned "stability in coaching" in Pheonix and Chicago??? Really? Gretz is not a great coach nor is he a stable coach. In fact, with his record in his time there, if his name wasn't Gretz he wouldn't be the coach anymore. And you mention stability in Chicago? Didn't they already fire their headcoach this season? Where is all this "depth" of talent? Both teams are getting deeper, but neither team has made the playoffs in at least 5 seasons. Those kids ARE the talent that is making the teams better. We will see if it translates into playoffs, but calling both Chicago and Phoenix stable coaching situations with deep talent?? I disagree there.

btw- i'm not trying to change your opinion of garth. by all means, think what you want. I just think that too much of the media were quick to jump on the Isles' case in the KO issue because Lucia cried to the media about it. Let's face it, mediawise our Front office is an easy target. I don't think GArth is a great gm, but I think he is an ok one so far.

Lucia was looking to scapegoat imo. His team was around 500 at the time, not up to UMinn standards.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

Concur. Can't imagine this being a result of the new system.
