Who's that directed at? I'm assuming the people who are not Hilbert fans? Listen, guy plays hard, is responsible defensively but don't you see a difference between a guy like say, Comeau and Hilbert? Comeau has way more upside and it's still up in the air if Comeau can be a consistent top six forward. Where does that leave Hilbert then?

Hilbert gives everything every time he's out there. He's a terrific PKer. His line usually gets the role of covering the other teams top line, he's head smart and he's provided some offense. It's why he's referred to in our family as Awesome Andy...

however....

Oz, once we get legitimate scoring talent I'm sure Hilbert will find his way back to keeping the puck out of our net and not relied upon to provide offense.

But to compare him to Bates?!?!?! :angrier:

Okay, my two cents.

We do NOT suck. In fact, this team, based on the talent level and injuries that we have, is actually playing a bit above my meager expectations.

Some news- we will NOT win the Stanley Cup this year.

I am viewing this year in the following manner, right or wrong:

First, I will state my case here like everyone else. Why? Because I am a die hard Islander fan. Always have been. Always will be. If some call honest opinions "bashing", particularly if their opinion is different than mine I say "Get a life", or go post somewhere else. This site contains the most devoted, hard core Islander fans anywhere and it's existence is based on solid hockey based DISCUSSION. Which is the way it should be.

Second, I am looking for a team that wants to compete every night. We are in a slump right now, and if you think about it, we were in one with better players for extended periods of time over the past few seasons. I look at the Josh Bailey's, the Comeau's, Okposo's, the new coach and system and I look forward to the future. I also llook at the Hunter's, Guerin's, Weight's and Park's to see what, if anything, they can contribute to the TEAM.

We're a young team with veterans sprinkled in. The results will be mediocre at best. But that's okay. We've shedded the likes of Satan, Tank etc. and filled the gap with some older vets like Silly, Billy and Doug.

I want to see what we look like with Rick in net, Martinek and everybody else back and I want to see us moving in a direction for the future. I want to evaluate what we have and what we need. And I want to start building for the future.

THIS IS NOT OUR YEAR, BUT IT IS A VERY IMPORTANT YEAR TO PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.

Playoffs? I hope so. Free agents? Probably in our future. A new arena? Have to have it. New coach? So far so good. Good YOUNG talent? C'mon, you have to be psyched with the play of Kyle, Franz, Sean, Blake and Josh.

Right now we are a team in transition. nothing more. Nothing less.

Now let's build a winner.

And talk about it here.

no worries. nothing makes sense anymore.

next year or the following year, if we have a good 1st line, decent 2nd line and Hilbert is on
the 3rd line but promoted to 2nd line to fill in for an injury while a cement head is called up to fill in on 3rd/4th line for Hilbert...
the Hilbert bashers will complain, why is Trevino or someone else brought up.

If some people haven't comprehended the value of Hilbert on this team by now, they never will. They'll make excuses for him leaving just as much as tehy make excuses for Tambellini staying.

Starting to look like the vicious NY Islanders cycle starting up again. Everyone screams and cries for a real youth movement to properly build the team, just to start bitching and complaining 1/4 into season one. Talk about impatient!!!

Let's get real people. If they are gonna do this right it is gonna take three or four years with a lot more pain to come before we turn it around for good. Lots of prospects to develop and more solid drafts to feed the system.

If everyone is gonna start all of this bashing now we will end up with the same freakin' groundhog day bull$hit  we have been enduring for 20 years. If this team goes through one more trade the youth for overpriced, over the hill veterans period, I will be done with them forever.

Sooner or later the same old madness has got to end. Take a big gulp and get behind the youth of this team people. :isles: It's gonna be ugly for a while but will all be worth it in the end if we do this the right way. Keep bitching too much and the losing cycle will continue forever.

Dude, that's fine if you like the guy. I personally think the we are selling ourselves short if we're holding spots for players like andy hilbert. Comeau and even Thompson could develop into just as solid defensively and provide scoring/toughness, which Hilbert will not. Wouldn't you want to see what those guys can do since we pretty much know what we're getting with Hilbert, positive or negative. That's basically all I was saying when questioning his ice time.

Geez - I didn't know not liking Hilbert meant I have no concept about hockey.

Geez - I didn't know not liking Hilbert meant I have no concept about hockey.

What we get with Thompson? Really?? R u serious?

What we get with Thompson is a guy who is ok in his own end, throws a few good checks, doesn't have much in the way of speed or stick skills and loses just about every fight he's had. He's Asham without the slapshot, punching ability or extra gear in speed.

You are worried about "selling ourselves short with Hilbert" and suggest Thompson as a replacement? Come on.

There is nothing wrong with Hilbert except that he gets on the PP when he shouldn't and gets on the third line when he's a prototype 4th liner/pk guy on a strong team.

You aren't focusing on the real problem. Hilbert isn't the problem. He isn't even A problem. The problem is we don't have enough talent to make it so he plays where he should play...4th line minutes. We have to press guys like him and Sims into 3rd line minutes when both are at best 4th line players. Last year we did the same with Park. I love Park's hustle, but he's a 3rd liner. We had him on the first line...why? Because we didnt' have legit NHL 1st line talent.
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs
This team is definitely exceeding expectations, and anyone who's down on their performance needs some perspective.

We're near .500 with this club---very impressive. Without DiPietro, and with major injuries to other skaters? A freakin' miracle, thanks to Joey MacDonald and Co.

My only gripe is that injuries to guys like Nielsen might set us back in the program.
But glad to see Blake Comeau's back with the big club.

Arguing over Hilbert, Park, and personnel in general will get you nowhere. This team is not about this year, period. It's all about the future. What Bill Torrey said about the early Islanders applies with force to 75% of our current lineup. We need to replace these guys with younger, more skilled players, and as quickly as possible. Here's hoping we snag a couple of those high-touted College FAs to speed the process.

Our goal for this season should be simple--an exciting, competitive few months of hockey, and if our fortunes align, a string of instructive (and yes, ugly) losses en route to a legitimate franchise player in the draft.

^ I was thinking that too but than I go look at the standings and see the paridy and realize that we are the SECOND worst team in the league. I know the record lies a little but we are 10-16.... through 26 games what did you think we were going to be? Probably right around there.

And not to knock you, but you can no longer say we are close to .500.
