The Best That Ever Skated 80-81-82-83

FINAL Islanders 1 Penguins 9 ----------------- As I've read from posters on this board this is called growing pains. And we just need to play "THE KIDS" until they gel and Isles will be Stanley Cup contenders in 3 or 4 years. These are not quality hockey players. The Islanders did wrong by revamping team with AHL players and selling this KID CRAP. They have ruined my team I'm sure once Mr. 15 years returns all will be OK

It's a rebuilding process! This is what happens. What did we think rebuilding meant? |

It HAS been a rebuilding process for quite some time. Can you tell me when it will be completed? The Drive for Five is now officially the Drive to Survive! |

Amen, Ledzep. Wang is not trying to improve this hockey team, he is just biding his time trying to get the real estate deal done. Everything on the cheap: GM, Manager(boy, did he learn from the Smith and Nolan selections-NOT!), and player signings(one way contract for you know who). Feed the fans the youth movement KoolAid, and hope for the best. I do give credit for the draft, but it has to be partial credit until we see how it turns out in 5 years. Go Go needs to come up with a system for defense. It was good that the Pens missed the extra point they needed to get into double digits. |

Really? Has it? Can you tell me when it started? Was it when they traded for Trevor Linden? Was it when they traded for Wendel Clark? Was it when they traded for Kirk Muller? Was it when they traded for Alexei Yashin and Mike Peca? Was it when they signed John Sim? Was it when they traded for Ryan Smyth? Was it when they signed Bill Guerin and Mike Comie? Was it when they signed Doug Weight? This team hasn't seen a day of rebuilding until this season. Once they dump Weight, Comrie and Guerin it will happen in earnest. Signing and trading for veterans isn't part of a rebuild. Just because this team has been mediocre for a long time and hasn't won a cup since before many people on this message board were born doesn't mean they've been rebuilding since 1984. This team has never attempted a true rebuild until this season which is why they've been stuck in this terrible middle ground forever. |

Good points but I disagree with terminology. To be totally accurate, this team has tried to rebuild a winner since the 80's. But only this year have they embarked on a mission to build a winner from within. Depends on how we spin it. Either way, the results have been tougher to stomach than Lucy trying to down a spoonful of Vita-Meata-Vegamin.

Steve, every team tries to get their team back to a winner. This team has been no different, they've just been bad at it. But a true rebuild that isn't based on the fact that the owners didn't want to pay their players? That's never happened here. |

I know, it's been so overly discussed and debated here over the years by all of us. I think I'm numb to it by now. It's just that every year, we have or should I say, find something to latch onto in terms of hope (ie: slight winning streak or great play of MacDonald). Then we get to within 2 games of .500 and boomf... the floor falls from under us and reality sets in, one loss at a time. I'm both curious as I am worried over what further "changes" lie ahead. |

Can't do that. The NHL has a cap floor that every team must surpass as far as salary. Dumping all of the veterans and going that route isn't an option. |

Some points: Isn't getting a new arena the big piece to the puzzle to ultimately improving this team to an elite franchise status. The man is also losing 15 million plus per year with this team and that is nothing to sneeze in today's economy or any economy for that matter. I thought Garth chose the new 'head coach', going with the young teacher guy who would have been more patient with the rebuild and young players than an experienced high priced guy who may not have been on board with rebuild. It's been rehashed in many threads about how guys just aren't coming here. Did you want more stopgaps like Vasicek, Tank, etc so that we may just miss the playoffs. I'd like to win too but am board with this rebuild and was fully aware we played way over our heads in November. We are not as bad as last night but not as good as we were in November. We're at the bottom of the league as far as talent so it goes to follow we'd not be very good. I fully agree with fasty. I expected us to not be good and accept it for what it is. I'll still watch every game like I do every year and hope to grab a franchise player in the draft in June. |

That was tough to watch. This team looks lost, no fire, no idea, no chance. Growing pains? I respectfully disgagree. Look, I'm the first one to say we are what we are. Kids with vets playing in a system where most of who we have don't fit. But that does not mean we don't at least compete. Last night we did not. We haven't for four or five games and that is unacceptable. I know we have injuries, but we looked, for the first time, like we didn't care. And I admit I turned it off in disgust after two periods, but couldn't we have at least had a scrum or two to show we were ticked off. If it happened in the third I missed it, but it should have happened much sooner. Probably didn't happen at all, and that would not surprise me. Not a happy camper right now. Not at all. |

he's worn that light purple tie a few times already though. Wonder if it isn't one of Nolan's from last year that accidentally got dropped in the WHITES laundry w/bleach.
