Mike Comrie yesterday said he feels ready to play, and the Islanders have been shorthanded at center. Sounds like a natural move to activate him for tomorrow's game at Minnesota, right?

Not so fast. As coach Scott Gordon explained yesterday, the Islanders currently have 29 players on NHL contracts because they have so many players on the injured list and have been required to call up several players from Bridgeport.

Some came up as emergency call-ups and some as regular call-ups. Two veterans on one-way contracts have cleared waivers and could be sent down. Finally, Jeff Tambellini's conditioning stint ends Saturday, when he will count against the maximum 23-man NHL roster.

"Right now, there's a lot of things that have to be juggled, just a lot to toss around," Gordon said yesterday. "So, I don't know that it's really an option for Mike to come back in the lineup. Somebody that's here on an emergency would have to go back down. Unless we're shuffling the deck with a winger going down, we'd have to make room for him at center."

The latest to come up on emergency call-up was center Ben Walter, who played 11:21 in Tuesday's 5-4 overtime loss to Washington and earned some late power-play time. Walter had a couple solid opportunities to score and generally was in the right place when he had to be.

"He played a solid game, especially for a guy who missed a large portion at the beginning of the season," Gordon said, referring to Walter's knee sprain in training camp. "He fit in well. After we scored the tying goal, because of the way he played, I put him out there with about two minutes left in the game."

Comrie and forward Kyle Okposo both skated again in yesterday's practice, which included hard skating for about 45 minutes and some battle situations. Gordon said both "are skating fine and are beyond their injuries." Slotting Okposo back in at wing might be easier than fitting Comrie in at center.

But Comrie said this week of practice is just what the doctor ordered to regain his conditioning and timing. "When you've missed some time, the key is to try and create game-like situations," Comrie said. "We did some system play, which is good.

"Hopefully, I can play the next game. We all know what's at stake. We've got to start winning some hockey games. We all want to get back on the ice. We've got to be healthy, and right now, I feel good. "

How is it complicated? Fritz & Walter go back down no? Then we roll 4 incomplete...I mean complete lines. Am I missing something here...or is Gordo covering for the fact that Minus Mike has made it into his doghouse. Maybe there was something to those comments about the "system".
Prolly not tho :yea:

You're right Sybo. This is just an excuse. They would find a way if they thought he would help. The best we can hope is he comes back, produces and we unload him for a second rounder come trade deadline.

I wrote an I4C length comment about this in the other comrie thread.

I agree sybo. What's that say when you cant make room for last years leading scorer amidst a 9 game losing streak because you have emergency bridgeport call ups.

I'd rather the lineup not change and Walter stay instead of Comrie, but this just adds to the alleged Gordon-Comrie rift.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

Comrie should play left wing anyway. The guy can never win a faceoff.

The article says that 2 veteran players have cleared waivers and can be sent down to the minors...I know of Jon Sim, but who is the second player? I don't recall hearing about this.

well, BOTTA says the opposite.

My guess is Pock. According to Logan, Veteran = Anyone with a One-Way contract. :moon:

would it really make sense to send Sim down over Fritz at this point? The guy plays a minute a game. Let's roll four complete lines for a change.

I will ALWAYS say to drop Hilbert over anybody. But watching Fritz play is pretty brutal.

By the way, the Isles are like 0-6 without Tambellini in the line-up. Just sayin.
