What I take from this comment(Newsday 12/16) is Comrie doesnt buy into this system. I get the impression he thinks it's amatuerish by just throwing pucks at the net and hoping to be lucky. Phrases like "scrambles" and "not a whole lot of pretty plays" tells me he thinks this is not NHL hockey. And up to 3 weeks ago I would've disagreed with him, but the more I see this clubs ineptitude (excluding last nights 3rd period) and how we chase the puck endlessly I'm starting to believe that Gordon either has to adapt better to the NHL or we'll be looking for a new coach next season. Our system is based on a strong forecheck. Well for two periods last night and two solid weeks before that all I've seen is 3/4 of the game played in our zone. The other teams have controlled the puck in our end like they were on a perpetual power play while we get a dump in, maybe a shot and then out chasing the puck again. Maybe it's because we dont have the talent to sustain that forecheck. Maybe the guys are too tired. Maybe the vets dont buy into it. Maybe we're too slow as a team. Whatever the reason, Gordon must adapt his game plan or this losing will continue. Some may think that's good as we'll land Tavares, but the basics this team subscribes to will still be flawed. I was very high on Scott Gordon at the beginning of the season but as it's worn on and I've watched this team play like a High School Freshman team of dump it in, try to create a turnover, get it out of the zone by banging it off the boards to center ice, and not like the better coached teams we see night in and night out. This system has now drained the little confidence we had and everyone on this roster is now tentative with the puck, especially in our own zone, that we make mistake after mistake. I'm sorry to have to say this but I believe Mr. Scott Gordon will NOT be the Islanders head coach next season, I dont think he'll even make it to the end of this season. I hope Gordon can mature on the NHL level and adapt his system to the caliber of play, and create variations to keep other teams from adjusting. |

I lay some extra blame on the older members of the team and our inability to shoot. Almost all of our goals are on deflections or flubbed shots. It seems rare that a guy that gets the puck in a good place can pick a corner and fire it home, a la Ovechkin in overtime last night. Granted he is world class but our guys would fire wide or into the logo of the goalie. I honestly think Guerin deserves more blame for all of this as the captain. I think he floats at times and sets a bad example. Last night I saw him racing down the ice back checking and couldn't see his number and I was like who the hell is that guy. When I saw it was him I was shocked and wondered why I seldom see him flying around. |

it should read.... Gretzky AND Lemieux couldnt help the islanders |
| After a narrow victory in 1994, Boston Bruins defenseman Al Iafrate was asked why, in the closing moments of the game, he had fired the puck around the boards rather than into the empty net. His reply? "Empty-net goals are for faggots" | |

Inexperience is the Isles problem, it starts with the owner, goes throught to the GM and triclkes down to the coach. we had a real NHL caliber coach, but our know nothing GM fired him because he would not play his "kids" now he can not get rid of his top "Kid" (Tambellini) fast enough. you go garht , get another PHD or whatever it was that supposedly qualified you for the job, making good trades to dump salary is only one part of the job, how about hiring a competent coach and getting some talent? i think that may be a wee more important than trading down 10 times for a plethora of less skilled players |

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs
|
A few comments here. First, I think Logan in Newsday put it perfectly the other day---this is the demolition part of the Islanders' rebuild project. You cannot get back to the top without taking a step back. The Caps team that beat us last night certainly did that for 4 seasons, and they're doing quite well now, aren't they? Focusing on wins and losses this year should not be our primary focus. Second, with respect to what system we're playing, which is your broader concern, I've never been a big fan of "systems" in general, but Gordon's work ethic and attention to detail make me believe that he'll adjust his system to respond to challenges. My preference is for a team whose system naturally matches its core players' talents, but we have next to no core, so the current plan is better than none. If we wind up drafting offensive dynamos or defensive shutdown experts in the next 3 seasons, I would expect that we'll adjust the system to suit their skills. Third, I think anyone would concede that Gordon does not have a terrific cast of players to implement his system. In fact, we have a fairly poor to middling group of players for just about any system. This is one of the least talented squads we've fielded in my 30 years or so as a fan. Given all the injuries we've sustained to key personnel, I still give the coaching staff high marks for our overall performance to date. Fourth, and most emphatically, if Snow fires Gordon during the season, I hope he'll follow him right out the door and turn off the f'ing lights, because from this fan's perspective, Gordon's doing exactly what Snow hired him to do---install a new system, put the emphasis on playing the kids whenever practicable, and work constructively with, not against, players and management. We need stability on Long Island, not more upheaval. I just don't see what our new coach has done to merit getting canned less than three months into his tenure. Jeez, are we quick with the hook here or what? |

Dr., you are certainly right when you say this is the least talented group in 30 years. Nicklas Andersson, Marty McGinnis and Travis Green were more entertaining to watch. Maybe it is the lack of talent that prevents the ideas of Gordon to show, and maybe it's not a system to play against the best players in the world. I dont know, but we should be seeing more cohesion as the season wears on not less. |

Caps had a superstar though and they added some nice players. Kyle O looked good at times but not the caliber of Ovechkin. how far did the caps trade down to get Ovechkin? |

Bozo belongs behind the bench with the group that is currently on the roster. Gordon seems to be a good hockey man. I feel bad for him. He's trying to win but in reality, this is a tank year. When do we start the welcome Tavares thread? |

Funny how we said the same thing about Nolan, Stirling Lavy and everyone else who has stood behind the bench. All of them couldn't have sucked that bad. |

The Islanders have played 31 games. That's around 600 man games. Our regulars have missed close to 200 man games due to injury. That's means a third of the lineup has been filled by substitutes. That includes our franchise goalie. Compare that to what Tampa did the year they won the Cup. They only lost 34 stinking man games to injury all year. That's as far as you have to look to explain having only 10 wins in 31 games. |

They could have all their players healthy. This team is in no way, shape or form close to that Tampa team. They had players in their prime producing. There are no stars on this team. |
