Here's another telling quote from Ben Walter, called up yesterday from Bridgeport.
"We've had a lot of guys buy in." Implying what? Our failure is because not alot of guys buy into it? "I think down there, maybe teams don't get the scouting and don't get to see it as much. A lot of those teams, it's the first time we've played them, and they haven't really seen it before." Yesterday I wondered (out loud) if this system is not usable in the NHL as the caliber of teams, their talent and their ability to adapt can handle the system we try to implement. An AHL team wins that game they're leading after 2, but in the NHL the coaches and talented players adjust. To me these are telling signs. |

No I in team, but there is an "m,e".
|
But remember how JJ did with the Sowboys. "H. Walker trade". If the Vi-queens weren't so stupid giving up all those draft picks in that trade, the Sowboys might not have gotten 3 rings. Or it might have taken longer. But they did and so they drafted well. Now if the did so well as all the experts say (for last year), maybe they can do it again this up coming year. One can only hope.We knew it was coming this year. Should anyone really be surprized? A nice start, but the losing was coming. I just want to see effort, not being blown out by 7, 8, 9 goals. But what is still makes me is having a team that makes the play-offs (with P.L. coaching) then can the coach the next year for a "bad start". Be in the play-off chase only to throw it away by giving up (like him or not, Parrish was the leading scorer in the year of Shaw, when he was traded). Bring in Jack Adams winning coach, make the play-offs, only to NOT improve the following season, miss the play-offs, tell everybody you think we need to rebuild, fire the coach, and stick us with "this". It should have never come to "this".So I go on and support this team. But as I look at it, I don't see where these "vets" are helping "da kids". Never was a fan of B.G. coming in, let alone naming him "C". (Claude wore #13 better) Didn't like Mikey coming here, but he's here. We got ex-islander scoring against us, (which just seems wrong) as if they were sending the management a message. I am trying to make it regular thing to go an see the team when they come here (MN), but I've decided not to this year. Economy, and the holiday season has a little to do with it. But this team is the biggest reason I'm not. Believe me, I'd go broke 'till the next pay check to see this team, but why put myself through that this year (which is what I asked myself). I don't believe Chuck Wang really cares ABOUT the TEAM. I think Garth is just playing around HOPE-ing it pays off. It hasn't payed off for Kevin McHale with the Timberwolves. So when they come here Friday, I'll be at friends house watching. I'll wear my jersey, my hat, my jacket, talk smack with my buds (but we both know the Isles and Wild really won't do much this year), and just try to enjoy the holidays. The avalanche starts at the top of the mountain. Happy Holidays to all of you. May be better to you then Garth and Chuck have. |

It would be nice if we had a young guy healthy and/or scoring. I think it's just frustrating we're not seeing any kind of improvement. But we're not biding time either, we're winning by losing and come draft time we'll be very happy. In winter/spring 2010 is when our young guys should be hitting strides and winning games - hopefully DP is healthy and really good by then and we have some defense too. Ottawa's futility in the 90s lead to many years of success. I know we've had to endure a lot more than most other teams, and we keep shooting ourselves in the foot. I guess in my point of view if we keep losing enough we'll have so much talent by way of high draft picks eventually it won't matter who our coach is. A note on the coaching: While it doesn't seem our guys our "buying in" to the system, I don't think anyone has talked about how our system reacts to scouting reports on other teams. I'd be curious to know really, do we have any adjustments anywhere along the line for different teams? I think preparing your team for different opponents is a big part of being an NHL coach and I'm wondering if Gordon just has a "my team" mentality? And really the injuries are out of control. They should stop practice one day and bring in some medical people to evaluate everyone and see what they can tolerate as professional athletes. It seems every few years we get run down with injuries, isn't there a strength and conditioning coach somewhere who should be getting replaced? Or going to a seminar Or telling the players to eat Wheaties or drink milk or something? |

I refused to drink the Kool aid from Chris Dey and Garth Snow in the off-season and I refuse it now. And please, no more smart-alec responses like... "well, the system needs time" or "you have to be patient with the rebuild blablablabla. No s sherlocks. That's besides the point. If Burke or Lamourillo was doing this I'd feel alot more comfortable. Problem is, it's Garth Snow. The goalie to GM who "impressed" Charles Wang. And don't tell me to be "patient" with him. We know all the good and bad moves he's made and we've debated them to high hell. No one is going to teach us anything we haven't discussed. Here's the point. Bobby Clarke, a Hall of Famer, went from player to GM. Only difference is he had a decent team but outstanding goaltending in the 80's. I think they even made the finals a couple of times during his tenure. The fans STILL despised him for his stupid maneuvers and dealings. He admitted that he learned on the job and after being let go and later coming back... he was a much better GM. Garth Snow is a a grain of sand compared to the rock that is Bobby Clarke, yet we are to TRUST him and be patient because he has Charles Wang's confidence? So did Milbury. Everytime this team has made us smile and buy into "project hope" (the islanders version) they've also let us down. Now this system is something we need to have patience in. I've heard this crap before. They treated Nolan like crap and Nolan turned out to be a malcontent but yet another casualty in the periodic spin-the-wheel-of-islanders-direction-destiny. They jerk Bailey around by keeping him here and not sending him to juniors because they are not patient as they want us fans to be...heck it's all marketing, get it through your thick skulls. Garth just wants to prove that he was right and each game that goes by without a Bailey goal must be killing him. Patience people, patience. Now Comrie drops a few hints. I don't want him on our team but cannot blame the guy one bit. This is a good system but this coach has shown NOTHING in terms of adapting to other teams adjustments to his system outside of changing lines. Garth Snow, you tried my patience and lost. There's your stupid patience. I wish I could use a SAP feature on Garth Snow everytime he makes a comment so i can hear it in Mandarin because it would make just as much sense. And for the record, yes I'm a die hard islander fan, have been for going on 36 years now and I still root for this team, but I'm tired of being their flavor of the season Kool aid tester under this management/direction. |

Don't give Wang any ideas, the last thing we need is MM back as GM. It is frustrating steve. Wouldnt be so bad if we saw improvement along the way, but this team with a healthy defense is playing worse in our end then a month and a half ago when we had Campoli, Witt, Sutton, Martinek, Meyer all out of the lineup at the same time. |

Let's take it easy people. Losing patience again. We knew we were gonna take it on the chin this year even with a healthy roster. Well, we haven't had a healthy roster. It has been in constant flux. A new coach and new system are hard enough to adapt to with a healthy team. I believe that Gorden's system can work with the proper players and with some continuity. Right now we just have to enjoy the little positives like tieing the game from two goals down last night. One thing our team has shown is fight. They don't give up. Maybe Gorden will have to make some adjustments in his system??? Remember, this is his first NHL experience too and he needs an adjustment period as well. I'm not ready to give up on him yet. He deserves at least this season and part of next to show improvement IMO. This is supposed to be a long term partnership between Snow and Gorden to bring stability to our organization. If you are all gonna bail so quickly, you might as well fire the coach and trade all of our youth for has beens like we have done so many times over the years. I was against the hiring of Snow from the beginning, but now that we are where we are I am gonna be patient because if this organization continues to flounder as the laughingstock of the NHL they are gonna lose me and like minded fans forever. Laviolette was a very good coach who never deserved to be fired the first time around. If Wang had fired Milbury instead of Laviolette this organization would probably be in much better shape right now. But we have been there and done that. I don't think any coach would be doing any better with this team this year. Or maybe you would rather we have a coach that would squeek our team into eighth place and a first round ouster again and again. And the cycle will continue. |

please refer to this:
Maybe Gordon will have to make some adjustments to his system? Really???? Who knew. Injuries? really? The system and the players within it are flawed and it starts from the top. We are in an Indy 500 race with a Chevy Malibu and Hellen Keller driving it.

to Dr. Generosity and I4C.Three months in, and we're doing poorly--quick fire the coach, fire the GM, and sell to someone else with a quick fix, and some kind of Milbury plan! You may not want to hear "give the system time," but that's the truth, Ruth. Depleted roster, inexperienced NHL coach, and you expect a playoff run? Competing for the 9th slot? There is no doubt that Go-Go is going to have to make changes at some point. Injuries decimated what little talent the Isles have, and now the team is in another big slump. Some of us may have drank the Koolaid over the summer, but at least we didn't half-heartedly agree with the rebuild just to whine about the results later. Comrie's quote was definitely taken out of context, and he may be showing that he doesn't buy the process, and if that is true, he won't be a part of the rebuild. Year one is the demolition. This year we'll see who buys into it, and who doesn't. I think Guerin, Weight, Hunter, Streit, and Hilbert do. I think Park just likes playing hockey--but also that he may buy in. I think other players are on the fence. They don't see the light at the end of the tunnel, just like a lot of fans. I don't see the light yet, but I hear about it. I see it from other teams, so I know it exists. Garth didn't bumble the draft. Getting Filatov would not have fixed all of our problems. Replenishing the decimated farm system is looking into the future. Picking Filatov would have made sense if the farm system needed just a couple of potential fire starters to round it out. The Isles took 5 or 7 of the top 73 draft picks, more than any other team. That is smart drafting. Next year Garth can take whomever is the best pick when the Islanders pick because we have some kind of foundation to start. I think Go-Go will be a part of the team next year. This year is growing pains. This year is going to hurt. We are most likely going to finish as one of the bottom two. We will hopefully be able to draft a stud. Go-Go will learn where his system needs to be upgraded. If by next year we don't see improvements, then we'll see management positions changing, possibly coaching changes. We can't sit here, and say: crappy in 3 months? I thought the rebuilding process was going to take ten games max! The best thing Comrie can do is come back, and play his heart out, so that he can find work next season--or ups his trade value. |

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs

I hear Steve loud and clear, no one likes to hear the annoying "patience" refrain. Sad to say it, it's the only option we have. Saying that, is there a good case for patience (assuming we had other options)? Yes. Rookie players make mistakes, learn lessons, and improve. Why not rookie coaches? Let's evaluate how Gordon responds when we have 82 games in the bag. The AHL has a pretty good track record of producing quality coaches and there are enough extenuating circumstances for me to believe Gordon's capable of better work. Do we trust Snow and Wang? Another "no choice" question. Even if we don't, they're the guys in charge. Fortunately, the good news is that even if they screw up, we're more likely to finish dead last as a result. I don't see this team making an aggressive move to get short-term success or trading draft picks, and those are the only two mistakes available for the current management to make. As for whether we fans should trust in Snow and Wang, my own willingness to trust them is strongly tempered by the fact that one of these guys traded three first round picks for a rental player (quite arguably to "ace" his freshman year final exam), and the other one inexplicably retained Mad Mike as GM for six seasons. But it's not about personalities, it's about concrete actions and results. Snow & Co. have set the ship in the right direction with a youth-oriented rebuild, and as long as they stick to that plan, the wins and losses don't matter so much to me. |

I really don't see how anyone could have expected anything other than what they have gotten this year. We have fielded a team of AHL players. It doesn't matter what system they play, we were going to get similar results. |

Our rebuilding plan starts with Hedman or Tavares! We should take our medicine and actually (hate to say this) cheer for the opposition. I know it's hard but look at the three most excitng young teams (Washington,Chicago and Pittsburgh). All of them had high drafted franchise blue chip prospects. Its the only way! |

did so well as all the experts say (for last year), maybe they can do it again this up coming year. One can only hope.
is having a team that makes the play-offs (with P.L. coaching) then can the coach the next year for a "bad start".
It should have never come to "this".
be better to you then Garth and Chuck have.
