In the most glaring of ways, our defense stinks. The best we have had the past 3-5 games has been FMIV and Mark Streit. Who would keep and who would look to get rid of. IMHO, as popular as Witt is, I don't see him fitting "Speedo" Gordon's system. He really hasn't been the same since the injury. Pock is another one who must go. Simple turnover machine he is. |

Yuck, does this include FMIV's -4 game against Washington? He's -8 in the last 3 games. I know this can be misleading, but he's been pretty rancid. |

I hate reading about how guys "won't fit into Gordon's system." Nobody should be drafted or acquired to "fit Gordon's system," we should acquire guys with the most talent. The reality is that Gordon could potentially be out the door next season, despite what Snow or Botta or anyone else might say. Brendan Witt is an excellent stay-at-home defenseman and we don't have anything even remotely resembling what he brings among the current prospects. Honestly, I would love to see Witt stick around because hopefully if we turn it around in another season or two, he'd be incredibly valuable on a contending team. |

Witt could fit this system, except he's lost a step. A big, crease clearing stay at home defensemen can play ANY system in the nhl. Witt's problem is he is getting beat wide whereas he used to be able to get people into the boards to stop the rush. I think he's lost a step and will never have more trade value for us than he will come the deadline. I'd love to ship Martinek and Gervais as well. Radek is always hurt and Gervais we MIGHT get a bag of pucks for. Maybe Maloney in Arizona can take him. He's used to acquiring no talent in deals. |

Unfortunately, I have to agree here. Witt is either playing injured or he lost a stop big time. |

Dumping Guerin and Weight doesn't make sense. Both are playing very well, and the teams needs a couple of vets. I'd say bye to a few other Islanders before these two. We supposedly have a crease clearing d-man with big Andy, but what the heck? He needs to clear the crease more. Stupid new rules handcuffing defense. |

I totally agree. Sutton's game is based upon moving guys out of the crease and slot. Now, it's a penalty to do that. I absolutely hate it and feel bad for Andy to be honest. That is why he was making the big bucks ($3 mil/per). |

I think they need to lighten the rules of interfering with the offense. The NHL thinks that high scoring games will bring in the crowds, but it turns hockey into basketball. Soon we'll be saying a 4.00 GAA is hall of fame worthy. The most a defense can do now is poke check, force a guy to the outside, and put the body in front of the puck. I miss hockey from the early 2000s--more fights, more hitting, a rougher game where you had to have balls to play. |

bexlyspeed- 3rd round draft pick
|
there has to be a happy medium, i do enjoy the game a bit more since the lockout, but it is a little too tightly called, but from about 96 until the lockout it was terrible with all the holding and boring play. now Hockey from the late 70's to the eary 90's was great, i have to say that 1993 was probably the last great year of hockey IMO |

I bet our troubles have more to do with the system than the talent. Witt today talked about the confusion in our end, and how the zone style defense leaves them confused on who to cover, who to pick up on rotation, which leaves players open and the Islanders vulnerable. It's probably why we're worst in the league in GA and shots against. This is the NHL where talented fowards can pick apart the seams of a zone defense, and one that's not being executed very well. |

Nick, remember when I complained about nit Witt last year? Going down trying to block shots, screening DP instead of keeping his feet moving? I got slammed. Fine. "He's a warrior" Not to me. I complained that he's too slow for the new NHL and as much grit as he brings, he's more of a liability. "But he blocks shots and takes guys off their game" This year, without him, with Skinner getting some minutes and a depleted defensive corps we had a more mobile defense and there weren't as many pivot and drive to the nbet moves off the boards from teams cycling in our zone because the lanes were plugged by faster more mobile defensemen. yes tehre were mistakes but the speed sorta worked with Gordons system and I cannot belive I will say what I'm about to. I think I'm with Gordon on this one. Witt should have kept his mouth shut. Yes, he's probably not a good fit for this system that may have it's flaws but he should know better than to mildly throw his coach under the bus like that.

Right on steve with the assessment of Witt. However, I think the writing is starting to appear on the wall for Gordon in the form of Logan articles. |

I'm loving the candid honest opines coming from Logan lately. Could it be a nudge so to speak from Cablevision (who also owns the Rangers)? I mean, their editorials on politics are skewed one way. Logan was always fair with this org and I loved reading his articles but seems he's not holding back this year. Between him and Botta, I love not having Kool Aid. Like you, I was mr. rah-rah always looking for positives last season. But no more. Still a fan and a die-hard who gets that adrenaline rush driving home from work knowing that in 5 minutes the game will start. But with Gordon...I'd bet alot of the vets wish they had Nolan back here. How do multi-millionaires respect a guy who's pushing them to conform to a system that still in it's infancy stages at this level? Especially when the bastid cannot come up with a counter strategy to opponents who figure a way to break his system??? ahhh yes...patience.

Steve - SPOT ON! I never question the human nature of the guys. They are great people. But have to look for development and future growth. Witt, as much as I like the guy, does not do that. He would be a key guy to put on a veteran - 2nd -3rd round playoff team. As much as I like Bruno too - I am just not sure he has much in the tank either. There are a few in the wings (Kohn - among others...) And as far as Guerin and Weight moving on??? Dougie is just about a shoe-in for comeback player of the year! |

Come on Steve, Zipay on one end is questioning Sundin as someone who does not know what he wants because he did not sign with team Cablevision (guess the age of dumpy Msg did not make the article or no frontloaded contract) while Logan is seeking out who is most uphappy. Witt got more space today than he did for resigning or since the day he came here. This is the same candid honesty opines that got us Yashin returning headlines or Nolan threatens veterans with trades that both had to be retracted after they did the damage. Logan hooked up with Gandler the same day the Islanders announced the injury policy and reported DiPietro and Guerin already had surgery. Meanwile when DiPietro was at the ASG Logan could not write one blog about it or Al Arbour night. This guy is never around for good news, that's when Herrmann shows up and tells us we have alumni nights to only sell tickets or get ready for the club to move. Or we get articles from Staple (another former Ranger beatwiter) telling us DP and Wang should shut up even though Baumback demands Wang speak up. The nudge from Logan/Cablevision/Newsday were the attacks on the team about the league injury policy which Newsday practically bullied the team out of while Msg would not even give the team a pregame show. Same week Isles started talking about injuries Isles got a pregame show. A company that sent Jaffe and Mears to every preseason game but would not let one appear live on ITV for anyone for days. Logan made Nolan's contract a public issue and kept it center stage then he made a big rift out of Snow with Dubielewicz. Sometimes all it takes is the media stirring the pot to become the final straw if communication is poor, think Nolan has sent Logan any thank you cards for making his contract a public issue now? Logan is the former Newsday Ranger beatwriter who goes on Msg and talks 94 Rangers just like Howie. Logan is outblogged 5-1 in the only paper with an Islander blog, enough with the fair angle. Professional writer but it's just a paycheck and an assignment. |
