DiPietro's out -- again

DiPietro's out -- again

One game into his comeback from a second knee operation in a span of five months, Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro is hurt again. He took part in the pre-game skate today at Madison Square Garden but will miss tonight's game against the Rangers with a strained groin.

Yann Danis, who was sent back to Bridgeport yesterday, was recalled on an emergency basis this afternoon to back up Joey MacDonald. At this point, it seems all information regarding DiPietro's ailments is suspect until you either see him in the lineup or not.

It was understood that DiPietro was not going to play Saturday in Buffalo after getting a 4-1 win over Toronto Friday in his first game back since the latest surgery on Oct. 31. Danis was called on an emergency basis to back up MacDonald against the Sabres, but the club explained it as more of a procedural move because DiPietro was expected to start against the Rangers. Coach Scott Gordon indicated on Saturday that he expected DiPietro to be in net tonight.

When the club returned Danis to Bridgeport on Sunday, that was cited as evidence that DiPietro would dress against the Rangers. Now this.

On the positive side, the Islanders no longer are willing to have DiPietro dress as the backup if he's not ready to start. So, recalling Danis for Buffalo and tonight's game is the wise move. But the fact DiPietro couldn't recover sufficiently from his first start suggests it might have been better to wait until he had enough practice time to regain his conditioning. It's hard to know what to believe about DiPietro's health at this point, except that he is having trouble maintaining it.

I guess Zep's wish (or prognostication) came true. Maybe he was onto something.
If you see someone down on the ground, you lend them a hand. Unless they're a Rangers fan, then you kick them in the face.

Well, right now they are calling it day-to-day and given that it is a groin strain (allegedly), that's not so bad. But let's see where we are with DP by the weekend.

In the past he has had.

1. Concussions
2. Hip surgery
3. Many knee scoops
4. Sore groin's

If he had a desk job ABOVE would heal but the fellow
he was at 20 would never be the same.

As a NHL goalie ABOVE never has a chance to heal %100
Now when he's in net he could be favoring either the knee
or hip which causes stress on the other injured parts of his body.

Unless he takes 1 to 2 years off this will always happen until
one of these body parts get hurt so bad that he will cause long term
injury to affect his life.

YES

Even after the 15 years is over.

Yeah, I know. To be honest, doesn't really bother me. For me, this season is about watching the kids grow. It would be great to see the youth develop and still get a shot at Tavares or Hedman. I don't like watching the Isles lose, but the circumstances are different this year (or so I keep tellng myself).

i saw a story somewhere saying a player has to miss 30 straight games in order for insurance payments to kick in if that players contract is insured...

I can't imagine a strained groin will warrant placement on the long-term IR. You can bet that whoever insures the contracts won't let a healthy scratch pass for an injury. Not at that money. In my line of business, that is called insurance fraud.

Oh, I thought you said 30 straight games, not cumulative.

Haha... INJURY??? It's not a torn groin, it's a strain. If this was the 2nd round of the playoffs I'm sure he'd be in net. What the hell is the point of playing him? If he's 100% healthy I wouldn't play him anyway.

Snowman you know I love you and you aren't wrong BUT he played Friday. Like someone said in the post, these guys are professionals, they play. They have to warrant people going to the games and such.

I'll premise this by saying it is more from frustration than anything else.

If this guy can't stay healthy, and based on the past he should have had a chauffer driven ambulance clause in his contract, he will go down as one of the biggest busts in pro sports history.

Healthy? For crying out loud he has played 4 games in the past 9 months or something. Sorry, but their comes a time when you have to face reality. And the reality is that this guy may NEVER be able to play.

Remember Carl Pavano for the Yankees? Never able to get healthy. Ever. And still collected millions of dollars. Hurt the team by not only not playing, but by absorbing money that could have been spent elsewhere. I know, they're the Yankees and money isn't a factor, but the point is the same.

And with us, money IS a factor. Ever wonder if that 15 year albatross of a contract hasn't affected our ability to acquire FA's? I'm sure it has.

If he were playing, different story.

I am losing my patience with him. Hell, even when he played he had to be reigned in from playing the puck too much, being caught out of his net and now this.

Hey Rick, put up or shut up.

Welcome Rick DiPietro, the Carl Pavano of the New York Islanders.

I think everyone's frustration is misconstrued.

Everyone should be pissed off and angry at Wang for giving him such an assinine deal.
