Is it spring training yet?

Interesting article...We could get some nice picks for him. I happen to love the guy...Decisions Decisions WEIGHT DOESN'T WANT TO BE TRADED By DAN MARTIN Doug Weight has enjoyed playing with the struggling Islanders and doesn't want to be traded. Doug Weight has enjoyed playing with the struggling Islanders and doesn't want to be traded. Last updated: 6:53 pm December 30, 2008 Posted: 5:27 pm December 30, 2008 With the last-place Islanders clearly in rebuilding mode, Doug Weight would seem to be a logical asset for the team to parlay into getting younger. The resurgent Weight leads the Isles New York Islanders in points and has played better than he had in recent years. The only problem: He'd rather not go anywhere. "I don't want to be traded," Weight said today after the team practiced in Syosset. "I've been treated great here. I love the coaching staff, I love the team." But the veteran has been around long enough to understand how the business works. He signed a one-year deal with the Isles and has shown through the first half of the year that he still can play at a high level and could help a team with more realistic postseason hopes. "It's always a possibility, seeing how the team started," Weight said. "We'll see what kind of position we're at in the new year. But it puts you in a sour mood when you start hearing about it for the first time." He's been through this before, having been shipped from St. Louis to Carolina, before resigning with the Blues after that season. That would be unlikely to happen this time around, but the Isles likely would still be better off trading the soon-to-be 38-year-old for draft picks. "It's a weird situation," Weight said. As to whether he'd rather have a chance to win elsewhere, he responded: "I see the maturation of young guys, I see picks and trades that could be made and maybe all of a sudden, next year at this time, the Islanders are in fifth place, fourth place, you never know. Do you jump ship . . . and join some other injury-riddled team?" That figures to be determined soon enough. As for the Isles injuries, Rick DiPietro Rick DiPietro returned to the ice after missing two straight with a strained groin. "I would have loved to play at Madison Square Garden, but we're trying to do this the right way and be ready for the long haul," DiPietro said about missing last night's 5-4 loss to the Rangers New York Rangers . "The knee felt good and that's obviously the main issue." |

Bring back...PRIDE OF THE ISLAND
|
I like him too, but love the Islanders more. As Botta wrote on his blog, if the right deal is out there, do it, if not sign him for one year. |

yep. I'd say if you can't get a first or second round pick for Weight, then you reup him for another year the day after the deadline passes. Same for Guerin. I think Weight is the only guy on our roster who can merit a first round pick, but only if he contuniues collecting points. I think Witt could on a team looking to add depth and size on the blueline, but I think they'd be overpaying for Witt at this stage of his career. |

He should hook us up like he did with the Blues. Guerin can stay and he can come back next year when we are better and have Tavaras or Hedman. The article says he isn't ok with that but come on, it is a bit unethical to do. Of course he should say that. Come on Doug. We send you on a ride for another cup and then you come back to play with your homeboy for another season. |

He HAS to say that or it becomes tampering. To even have a verbal discussion of being in favor of such an idea would violate the CBA. |

By the time this team can contend for anything, Weight will be retired. By all means, look for a deal. His current pace isn't sustainable anyway, it's time to sell high. |

I would move him for a 1st round (Not at all likely) or a 2nd round pick. Anything lower I'd say no to and hang on to him and perhaps extend his contract. |

Like Botta said, I think we could package Weight and one of our late-second-rounder to get a first rounder. Or Weight and Comrie for a first and second. |

Keep Guerin and Weight, and package Witt and Comrie.

Its all gonna depend on the types of offers on the table because quite frankly.......anyone outside of Okposo and Bailey are very available. |

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs
|
Not quite. Weight can express a preference for returning to Long Island, St. Louis, the Charlestown Chiefs, or any other team, either before or after a mid-season trade. That's a signed player's expression of opinion, not interference with a third party's contractual rights (intereference with contract being the essense of tampering). Now, if Blues GM Larry Pleau (just taking a name for example) were to tell the media today, "I'd love to have Doug Weight centering my top line in January," that would quite different, because Pleau's not a party to Weight's current deal, and he would be meddling with a player who's betrothed or at least beholden to another club. Speaking slightly tongue-in-cheek, as fans, we might welcome other teams tampering with our dispensible veterans at this point in the team's development. I believe there may be some precedent for obtaining additional draft picks to compensate teams that have been subject to tampering. Jacques Demers' experience going from St. Louis to Detroit comes to mind, but that may have been a negotiated deal. Certainly Bettman has laid down the rule that teams may lose picks if they attempt to tamper. |

This would only hold off the progress we need. These players NEED to be dealt for draft picks. If we were a vet or two away from contending, it's a different story. |

I agree...you all (well, not everyone but the majority) wanted this rebuild and that includes dumping EVERYONE that can bring draft pick value outside of the young core and DiPi. Weight, Guerin, Witt, Comrie, Silly, I would say even Park (he's 32 isn't he?). We have not hit bottom yet. We are still 1-2 seasons away from competing. That means get the young guys and KEEP the young guys. |

Tough one as he has been the consumate pro while here. But I have to stay with my original stance and say move him for draft picks. The toughest part is what was said in an earlier post here which I completely agree with: Finally, someone wants to stay. If there is a way, look at it. But most likely he'll be gone. |

I'm somewhat torn on this too -but Dougie has been trade bait at the deadline or mid season for a few years now so if he's dealt for a pick (or whatever) and Snowy flashs another 4 mil incentive laden deal under his nose on July 1st he will come back otoh , I think he's the perfect vet to have around to mentor Bailey |
