WHATS AMUSING IS JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO
JANKS WAS THE MAGICAL MYSTICAL OZ
NOW YOU READ AROUND YOU SEE  "BFD HE WAS ONLY THE ASST GM"
BEING AN ISLANDER FAN IS LIKE BEING A MARINE
ALWAYS HAVE TO BE ABLE TO IMPROVISE AND ADAPT

Agreed. This is an "odd" decision. If there is something more than simply $, I would hope one of the reporters covering this team can shed some insight. Not sure there is though. I spoke with Neil Smith a handful of time just after he was let go from the organization. Some of what is going on now makes me think back to his strong words about Wang. Obviously, not flattering.

On a more neutral note, I recall Gordie Clark was also hailed as the next genius in training and history seems to show his loss wasn't so catastrophic. Still, this is just odd.

A few questions:

1- What are the unique and specific job duties of Jankowski? Does he bring/add something more than what the scouts bring to him or does he just organize/prioritize the info for Garth?

2- How much does he make?

3- While this decision is obviously up to Wang, was it suggested/supported by Garth? If so, why? If not, what are the implications?

P.S. If we do ever consider hiring another Director of Scouting, the applicant may want to watch Spinal Tap and think "drummer."

Really curious to hear what Janks has to say about this.

It makes sense. Snow is doing nothing else (signing free agents or making trades), may as well scout.

Yet I have to continuously read fellow posters whine and bitch about why they're staying away because this board is negative.
This franchise we love continues to be run like a circus. THAT'S WHY!

I can only assume this was referring to my post. I never said I was staying away nor did I continuously wine and bitch. This was one of the reasons why I have not posted. I do not wish to get in a pissing match but wish for people to actually read what I had posted before making such a rant. I never said that I enjoyed the way the team is being ran. If I took this post out of context and it was not directed at me, Then I do apologize.

You neither took it out of context nor should you take it personally.
There are many who choose not to post as much or at all.

I did the same thing you did 2 years ago up until I said enough and left for the dark side.

I like the koolaid free zone <------JOKE it's just a joke, I swear!!!!

So now since Garth Snow is not only the GM but also the Director of Amateur Scouting,
it's safe to say that his track record for multitasking

helped in Wang's decision to NOT offer a new contract to Jankowski and reassign his duties to Snow.

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs

Whew, damn hard to get back to the business of talkin' hockey when I have to follow that classic pic.

Just read this sentence real slowly, like it's a paragraph long or something, and that'll clear the short-term memory a bit.

Okay, I'm back.

Anyhow, I was going to say the following:

Failing to resign Janks, or promptly replace him with a new director of scouting, is a mistake on so many levels.

First, this was a young, talented guy with obvious zest for the job who's been scouting a long time for his age. I was looking forward to seeing him grow in the job. And yes, the Isles sure did build him up. Hard to say he's a buffoon now. Interesting to see whether the Isles try to tell that story.

Second, if you fire one director of scouting, you replace him with another. Sorry, I feel like I'm insulting your intelligence and mine by pointing this out, I know it could not be a more obvious point. Even during the dark days of Milstein et al., we had a director of amateur scouting. It's a full time job, always has been, back to the days of Ed Chadwick and Hank Bassen et al. helping out the younger Bill Torrey.

Third, firing this guy isn't going to save a lot of dough, unless he engaged in some sort of incredible financial improprieties, which is hard to believe, since guys like this presumably depend on the GM and really the controller and other financial staff to get themselves and their staffs paid.

Fourth, I'm just speculating here, but I suspect this is a real knee to the groins of our scouts, some of whom are not exactly Isles vets yet. I mean, firing the guy is one thing (yes, I know he was technically not re-signed, but please) but not hiring a new head scout? WTF?? Snow's going to handle the admin duties of the job? Uh, sorry, NO. Joanne Holewa or someone like her is going to bear the brunt of this decision.

Fifth, every Islanders employee on the last year of their deal (hellooo Scott Gordon) will remember how we gave Janks little warning and then cut him loose. Loyalty is repaid with loyalty. Treating people like interchangeable parts gets you screwed.

Sixth, it would be interesting to learn why this really went down. Perhaps we'll find out. It can't be because Snow et al. inquired about Kovalchuk and didn't bat down the rumors. :P

Wrapping up: From time to time, I get tagged as an optimist in these parts. And it's true, since Wang fired Milbury, and especially since Wang and Snow started the rebuild, I've been a real happy camper. But this decision totally undercuts what we're supposedly trying to do. Without a really good explanation --- and a new director of amateur scouting who is qualified and given the tools to do that job --- two things I'm ready and willing to hear, Wang & Co. lose my confidence here.

What is Snow thinking?

Or does that question presuppose a fact not in evidence ... that he thinks?

Wow. We're going to build from within, without hiring anyone to oversee the process.

Troubling NHL numbers

DAVID SHOALTS

An interesting item in John Shannon’s blog on Sportsnet.ca the other day stated as many as six NHL teams needed advances on television and/or revenue-sharing money to pay the bills.

Given the persistent financial state of several NHL markets, there are always one or two franchises needing an advance on money that is usually paid out in September and October. But six is a troubling number despite our troubled economic times.

Shannon did not identify the teams but there are no surprises among them. Word is the needy half-dozen are the Dallas Stars, Atlanta Thrashers, Phoenix Coyotes, Florida Panthers, New York Islanders and (maybe) the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Stars are not normally found in this group but the team’s on-ice woes combined with the financial problems of owner Tom Hicks mean there are no checks coming from him to cover any losses. The Lightning might not be in this group because it is not clear just when new owner Jeffrey Vinik’s responsibilities for covering the team’s losses started.

The team to watch in this group is the Islanders. Owner Charles Wang is still waiting for the Town of Hempstead to let him and a partner proceed with their Lighthouse project that includes renovations to Nassau Coliseum along with an entertainment, retail and business development. However, a banker of our acquaintance has said even if Wang gets the green light the project is unlikely to proceed because banks are not willing to finance billion-dollar deals willy-nilly anymore, especially in areas like Long Island that do not need more office space.

However, Wang and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman are getting frustrated with local politicians and bureaucrats. Bettman told the Long Island newspaper Newsday last Friday that Wang may move the team.

If the town does not come through, Bettman said, Wang will “start looking at his options on Long Island first to see what he can do, but the club has to have a new arena.” Newsday writer Steve Zipay noted that Bettman did not deny a possible move to Queens to “a Flushing Meadows tract adjacent to Citi Field that apparently will be up for bid this summer.”

Actually, things may be more serious than that. Talk among NHL insiders is that the Islanders are now in deep financial trouble. Some are worried Wang may be the next NHL owner to toss the keys to the franchise to Bettman and say he is finished paying for losses in excess of $20-million (U.S) every year.

In other news at Isles prospects camp, rumors spread that the coaching staff could only afford 1 puck.

It's the building. I told you.

Jankowski was caught with a chisel and 12lb sledge in the upper rafters.

Call it damage control. Wang is doing all he can to make us great. Parking at this post is $8, but it will all go to charity. :sparky:

Amazing....how can he stand to lose so much money (when not calculating the cable revenue all these years) yet still put out such a quality product so unselfishly? Next year, Wang will endure the same losses (Coliseum revenue goes into another account so the team will lose money while his cable revenue continues to come in and the arena revenue streams augment that) and suffer, suffer, suffer....

Help us Obi Wan Kenobe, you're our only hope.

The morning after and still left scratching my head on this one. More than anything, I'm just not sure what to make of it until I get some clarification from some/all of the parties involved, though some of the speculation seems obvious. Still, I don't feel as bothered as I think I should simply because I'm not sure how/if this move (or lack thereof) impacts what we will see on the ice this year. I, too, am very optimistic about this team and their future. While there is enough drama and chaos in the front offices to fuel several (poorly written) soap operas, my bottom line is wins and losses. Will this move help us attract free agents? Probably not, but I doubt that this event is going to be the deciding factor in a free agent's decision to come here or not. We've already seen what types of FAs we are going to land. Over the last two years our point totals jumped from the low 60s to the high 70s. I am hoping to see another 12-15 point jump again this year. If the team continues on that trajectory, I'll be happy (even with front office shenanigans that make us look bad). That said, I'm not sure how much play this is getting outside of the die-hard supporters.

Anyway, all things considered, I'd rather that this didn't happen, but before I go jump off a bridge, I'd like to get some more info.

Don't hold your breath. You'll get a well crafted comment, but I doubt you'll get any true clarification of the reasoning.

Smitty, you won't see an impact on ice for a few years. What our farm system looks like today may not look as good a few years from now. I don't know how much influence Jankowski had on our picks, but if he was the 'eye' for talent then this could hurt us.

I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!
