All of a sudden brook's word is the absolute truth. Up until now he's been nothing but rag's BS.

Thank god we can all have our own opinion.

I just get a kick out of how a knowledgeable poster can post and all of a sudden he's like the pied piper, all the little fish's fall in line.

This is why I stick with the Kool-Aid. Cyanide is just a helluva drug. Apparently, it can even make Brooks seem reasonable and coherent. ;) :D

Brooks being pro-Islanders is like saying Hitler loved the West.

History nerd moment:

Hitler was loving the West after that Stalingrad winter(!!!)...and, in general, it seems that there may be some evidence that he held close feelings for the British people. History reports that he admired their empire and actually sought them as an ally. On the other hand, he hated the Russians/Slavs. I think it was based on both racial/ethnic lines and his strong distaste that Fascists feel towards Communists.

So, what better way to say Happy Birthday America! A little tidbit about our wonderful country. I was in Vienna a few years ago drinking with a German and his Russian wife. Super cool people but a bit "leery" of America. As a strong liberal, I understood where they were coming from, but I always like to defend my country. I casually mentioned to him that while Europe has an incredible history, the US is the longest functioning liberal democracy in the world. The guy rattled off a bunch of countries in Europe and it got painful after a while saying names like Hitler, Bonaparte, Franco, along with various Kings and Queens and the word "monarchy." The look on his face was priceless. He felt better when I assured him Germans have the best beer.

But, yes, Brooks is not exactly a credible source when it comes to the Isles. Come on people. Think!!!

EDIT: I was in Iceland last summer. The natives loved my Islanders windbreaker because, apparently, Islanders means "Icelander" in Icelandic. So, apparently, we are all Islanders...even in Europe.

Re-Edit: I posted this in the other thread, but also thought I'd throw it here.

F*ck .Larry Brooks, Pro-Islanders? You have got to be kidding me. For chrissakes READ the article. He's rubbing our faces in sh!t like he always does. He puts this franchise down with that friggin' smirk on his face every cahnce he gets. Pro Islanders? He's a Rag jock sniffing homer. Always was always will be. Screw him. And to say you AGREE with him? About WHAT exactly? About how he thinks we have no chance in this thing? How a free agent of any credence would ever even consider playing for us? How we will always be third wheels? Screw him the bastid. That article sucks and puts us down. F him. The condescending scum bag that he is. And when we do sign Kovi I wanna hear a retraction (that'll NEVER happen). I can't stand that a-hole. Shut the F up about my team. Write your schock about those scumbag Rags and leavu us out of your PR articles.

This thread reminds me of Godwin's Law, which states as follows: "The longer an online conversation continues, the greater the probability of a reference to Nazis. At that point, the discussion is effectively over."

Notwithstanding Godwin's Law, let me throw my cheap $0.02 in for consideration.

Brooks is occasionally a good reporter, but those occasions are unfortunately becoming rare. Brooks was effusive towards the Islanders in the days when they merited praise. Since then, the tone of much of his reporting has been critical, and deservedly so. Nonetheless, I often read his column and sense a good deal of gratuitous sarcasm---a New York sneer, if you will. Fine, that's the NY Post. But I don't have to respect it, and I don't particularly respect Brooks as I once did.

Brooks' reference to Kovalchuk becoming "Lost" on the Island is a classic, effortless, and thoughtless example of the easy put-down. It must be tough to type up this stuff...tougher than actual reporting...none of which, you'll note, actually appears in his piece on Kovalchuk. I mean, the guy has 25+ years of NHL beat experience. He couldn't pry loose one more new fact for Post readers today?
This is lazy, hack reporting, unworthy of Brooks. And us.

Absolutely astounding how Isles fans can make excuses for Wang's ineptitude and almost always give him the benefit of the doubt while allowing their sensitivity to get the better of them after a sarcastic entry from a sports writer.
At least you guys are consistent.

 :goofy2: ;)

How's that Great Pumpkin coming along? Mayve at 4am? How about 5am?

Nope, it's tomorrow. Nope, has to be Tuesday, yeah Tuesday. Two-fer Tuesday, we'll get
Kovy and Frolov!!! Woohoo, Wang will open up the purse strings and the great Pumpkin will soar over NVMC!!!!

Haven't we all learned by now? let's stop making ourselves ILLya over this.

If you haven't learned by now...reporters use sarcasm and chiding of fans to illicit a response.
I absolutely hated Brooks till I spoke with him. A few nasty emails the last few years following some things that hurt my little Isles feelings had me feeling like you guys.

He's all for the rivalry and NY hockey and all for us talking hockey. Which we are. Success.
Have a great evening.

You know we love ya here but I do believe that if the Isles somehow managed to turn back time and bring Dynasty era Bossy, Trottier and Potvin back to the present, you'd be upset that they didn't bring 1979 ticket prices with them. ;) :P :D

Cheer up buddy, it ain't so bad. We'll keep that die-hard fan bed warm for ya...you know, when we start winning again and you come back from the dark side. :isles:

Sure, I know Brooks' writing isn't worth a word of response...heck, he spent less time writing it than we've spent dissecting it...and in all these years of reading his stuff, I haven't bothered to contact him directly...if I agree with him, I say nothing, and if not, what's the point?

But I chime in here, not to Brooks, because it's fun...and I always hold out the hope that some of my fellow, beloved Isles fans will have a day in which they can say, hey, y'know what, Mr. Wang actually did something good here. :D I mean, it might happen...y'never know...

I just don't see the rationale for being upset at management for possibly trying to add a perennial 40-goal scorer to the lineup for no players or picks in return, just money. I mean, this is serious cognitive dissonance or something. If this effort is such BS, why is Snow on the record, why is Grossman not denying it, and why did Lombardi take off today? Note the LA article said that Kovalchuk rebuffed the Kings, not vice versa.

PS Here I'll insert my standard disclaimer that "cheapskate" Wang has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on this team, paying off Yashin for chrissake; our rebuild is not entirely an illusion and we do actually have a few decent young players; and lastly, that I was a bitter Wang critic until he fired Milbury and I'll take up the torch again if we abandon the rebuild and don't resign KO, Tavares, et. al.

PPS Saying that Brooks' writing seeks to "illicit" a response is better than I could put it myself. His "reporting" ought to be illicit; certainly it's rare at any rate. Ah well...see ya in a few days when we know how this little drama plays out.

You met him so now he's hockey royalty? Sorry Steve but did he give you a glass of kool aid too? Even the headline of the article is a shot at us. You're reading and believing a story from the last guy on the planet that wants to see us get Kovi. Why? Because his team didn't. He HATES the Isles.
As for getting Kovi- I don't know if we will but I will keep hoping we do until we don't. I bashed Garth and Wang as much as anybody but if they pull off this miracle it will be the best possible event in many years for the franchise I love. I hope they succeed in shutting my mouth and many others here. I'd gladly eat crow on this one.

Let's not let Brooks, or anything else, obscure the fact that this message board is comprised of die-hard Isles fans. Certainly, we can disagree on matters of player acquisition and management decisions without turning on each other, no? On that note, Rifle has a point. Steve, I am sure you did not mean it this way, but to imply that we have "little Isles feelings" because we dislike Brooks, or that our hope (even hoping beyond hope) and belief that we can land Kovalchuk is akin to wishing for the Great Pumpkin, or that you now know better than the rest of us here because you had some level of contact with Brooks is, at best, poorly worded and, at worst, comes across as a bit arrogant, belittling and condescending. Doesn't go too well with the title of Moderator. I know you are very, very disgusted with the administrative hierarchy of the organization. But that alone shouldn't crowd out the fact that many who use this site are not. We went through this once before with Chief. The fact is, none of us know what is actually transpiring. Best that we use a little humility in our posts to reflect this. Not to mention that there are valid points on both sides as to whether he helps us or undermines the path this organization has set for itself. I have to admit, I would love to see Ilya here, but I do worry that signing him now may be coming a year or two too early in the rebuild. Ultimately, though, it has been exciting and I want to see goals scored (not to mention fewer being surrendered). I believe Kovalchuk will do that for us so I'm on board. I just hope we can get him for less than 10 years.

Finally, on a more upbeat note: Steve, you should really keep a running log of all the video clips you have at the bottom of your posts. Some day, they will make a great movie. I work with some people who are in marketing and advertising. They talk about their "reels." Yours would be classic.

I think it's easy to label a report as "anti xxx team" when he says something that hurts, etc. But Brooks has proven he isn't even worthy of a detailed comment.
And I won't defend an owner who has badgered STHs on several occasions to cough up in advance hard earned cash while he has scaled down the franchise both on and off the ice. No sympathy for either party.
NEITHER deserve the support of any New York Islander fan at this stage.

Please don't take my reply as an attack on Steve. He and I have respectfully disagreed before and it is all good. My utter dislike for Brooks and his continued assault on this franchise make me personally skeptical about anything he says. He replied to an e-mail I sent him the same way he reports- condescending, foggy crap. I still have hope we'll sign Kovi and put this franchise back on the map. If we don't we have still made progress, can still get Frolov and can still move forward. Its all good.

Rifle, I did not take it as an attack on Steve. Quite the opposite, in fact. Regardless, as you say, it is all good. I know that the frustration many Islander fans feel comes from the intense loyalty and affiliation they have with this club. I suppose I should practice what I preach in that I sensed (rightly or wrongly) that Steve's passion, fire and feelings about the state of this team/organization (as he sees it) was being directed against fellow Islander fans in a less than optimal manner (I hope that this is not misconstrued as an attack on Steve, because that is not my intent - just trying to make an objective statement about something I've observed here). But what the **** do I know? I'm way too sensitive about stuff. Hell, I cry every time I watch "The Natural." Just not sure why "Apocalypse Now" brings tears to my eyes as well! :P

Anyway, back to the regularly scheduled programming of Kool-Aid and cyanide. D'oh!
