Team WAFA
|
Moulson, Schremp, Reese, Kohn and Lawson... The New York Islanders have tendered qualifying offers to Matt Moulson, Rob Schremp, Dustin Kohn, Dylan Reese and Nathan Lawson. Qualifying offers are tendered to players who are no longer on their entry-level deals but do not qualify as un-restricted free agents, making them restricted free agents. Teams must extend qualifying offers to restricted free agents to retain their negotiating rights and have the right of first refusal. As of Thursday, July 1, those players who have received qualifying offers will have until Thursday, July 15 to accept. The deadline for players to elect to go to salary arbitration is Monday, July 5. If a player rejects the qualifying offer, but does not elect to go to salary arbitration, the Islanders will still retain their rights until and agreement is made or they become eligible for unrestricted free-agency. The NHL club can also elect to take a player to salary arbitration and the deadline for club arbitration is Tuesday, July 6. Salary arbitration hearing take place starting on Tuesday, July 20 with the final date set for Wednesday, August 4. |

Does it though, Steve? I thought the same thing initially but are these guys coming off their entry level deals and that's why they have to be qualified? Can't see them letting Bergenheim walk for nothing |

Bergenheim and Tambellini are UFA's since they received no qulaifiers. Any RFA that doesn't receive one becomes an UFA and can sign anywhere. |

Seems odd to just let Bergie go. Does this mean we are becoming high bidders on the FA market? |

He didn't say high quality, just high, as in Andy Sutton/Brendan Witt/etc. high salary.

If Bergie's moved out for spending on higher grade players, then this is good news. I don't think he would really garner much on the trade front and that is probably why he was just let go. This COULD BE a good sign and I strongly suspect that it is. Fact of the matter is, they HAVE TO spend to the cap floor - why not invest your money wisely instead of wasting it on crapola...again (Sim, etc.). |

Well we've complained that we've had a team full of 3rd and 4th liners. There goes at least 1 (and a failed 2nd liner). |

Logical and popular move by not signing Tambellini, and a huge sigh of relief for me. As for Bergie, we've seen the best he's going to become and it wasn't worth it. I think it will prove be a terrific move by Garth and open a roster spot come October. No Sim, Park, Bergie means new blood. |

And further evidence of how those last three #1 picks of MM...Robert N, Nokie and Bergie were all BUSTS. Way to go MM. Did we get a total of 500 games from them combined? |

This means (to me anyway) that we're shedding the dead wood. We'll sign some marginal FA's, which is better than not signing any at all to compliment our young core guys. I'd like to say we're gonna make a big splash in the FA market, but with this team and owner I'll be realistic. I see a good (not great) D-man and maybe a swing type forward. Perhaps some grit as well. It also means we're gonna play the young ones as there will be roster spots available. It will be interesting to watch how we go through this "process". Sorry to see Bergie go as I liked him when he wanted to play. Too little too late for him and we are going to wave good bye to some guys we like, more because of the uniform they wore versus their realistic upside potential. I am hopeful the "the plan" will be obvious to all of us before too long. |
