Why go back to Dredger? Fine, his word is not worth the electrons it's printed with but I'm not suggesting I'm using him as my point. I'm using the other cited source, like his agent.

At present count, Botta has 1,142 comments on the IPB page re: the IK thing. Boy, this fiasco (?) sure has been good for CB at a time when he'd be lucky to get a few dozen hits.

It's not twitter or bloggers.  I know they don't carry credibility (although I used to give cred to Botta....use to).

How about tsn
Quote:

there are rumblings that the club may make a lucrative, long term contract offer to forward Ilya Kovalchuk.  One such source says that an offer could be in the 10-year, $100 million range.....Islanders general manager Garth Snow confirmed to ESPN via a text message that the club was involved in talking to Kovalchuk
, they used ESPN as a source or LA Times
LA Times

A source who is familiar with the situation but isn't authorized to speak about it publicly said the New York Islanders were offering Kovalchuk $10 million a year for 10 years to become the centerpiece of their team and their campaign for a new arena. The source said the Islanders, who are about $9 million beneath the cap floor, were close to finalizing a deal with Kovalchuk.
or the Daily News

is expected to make a decision Monday, according to his agent. Kovalchuk has received multiple offers, including one from the Islanders. Read more:

The news that the Islanders had entered the negotiations with a lucrative long-term offer, a reported $10 million per season for 10 years, got the attention of everyone in the hockey world Friday, especially the Kings and Devils, who had been the two clubs widely reported to be the frontrunners to sign Kovalchuk,

It was up to Garth Snow to repute these reports. These are relied upon sources for fans, not some blogger or twit-er.

No, it's not. And he'd be an absolute idiot to do so at this time. Later, he can offer a retrospective.

Really, Webby, I appreciate your passion and understand your frustration. But, believe it or not, it's not Garth Snow's fault. And I say this as someone who has some really serious questions about Snow and the way he's gone about business the last several years.

You guys are right, he doesn't have to repute those claims.

Espn was cited as a source. Hell, the daily news cites Kovalchuks agent as the source.

Sure some picked up on Botta, and he's probably doing the jiggy dance in his living room for it, but it wasn't just him.

AND ESPN was citing Dredger as the original source. They've all done it.

The original "Islanders are prepared to offer 100 mill for 10 years" started with Dredger. Then all the other outlets including the LA Times, ESPN, bloggers, Post, Daily News ALL cited that article by Dredger as their source.

Snow came out and said "we are doing our due dilligence" and "I spoke with his agent".

Then it took on a life of its own with all the analysis of "should we or shouldn't we" without even thinking about if it was happening.

Let's wait until the chips fall where they do and the players come out and tell us what happened (I'm more interested in hearing from the agent) before we all become bad Carnac immitations.

and what exactly did the agent say?

Each media and blogger outlet each used the Dredger report as its original claim. Now because an agent who is trying to up the price for IK said the Isles made a bid its gospel?

I think you need to watch an episode of Arli$$ j/k

At this point who knows who was credible and who wasn't? I'm bushed so I'll just wait for a formal announcement. I'm sure Snow will clarify things after its done. Either way. We will probably never know exactly what happened anyway.

The only thing that matters is we have an owner waiting for the Lighthouse announcement before he actually decides to invest real money into this franchise. Until then, what Snow says is all noise, like this previous thoughts on DP's non-injury.

I can tell you that the one person who I will now read with considerably more skepticism is Botta. I think he came off very, very poorly in this whole thing. He really fell a few notches, hell, he's practically off the ladder, in my eyes. CB said a whole lot and, at the same time, not a god-damned thing these last 72 hours. Maybe it is the heat or moving into his new home (which, truth be told, is really nice to hear and good for him!) but, boy, did his game fall off.

Ouch! Hey, the guy has to make a living, right? Now, I know how he does it. He is not the unbiased and as close to objective source of info that I previously gave him credit for being. Others appear to have known this already (I saw where Webb, in responding to I4C, said he hasn't trusted Botta for some time) and saw how he manipulated things to his advantage. I still think he brings a lot of great information and entertainment our way, but I think he is now more entertainment than information. And life goes on...

I think that's a fair assessment. Chris will have some valuable stuff when he acts as a straight reporter (see his entry this morning, and interview with someone who has information on Petrov), but when he goes off on his own, as he did about the draft and now that guy everyone thought we might sign these last few days -- what's his name? -- he tends to make himself the story, and that's happened before. His work on Fanhouse is better. That he also has a bit of an ego and a craving for uncritical applause doesn't help.

Funny, because as I was reading his interview re: Petrov on IPB, I was thinking that it was insightful, informative and so much different from the last few days. His interviews with a number of the top prospects were decent also.

Maybe I'm just drinking the Botta kool-aid but I didn't take anything he said this weekend as he knew what was going on in Isles-land. He's stated many times over that he doesn't have a great relationship with the current Islanders and that breaking news will come from Strang first.

What the guy does have is NHL contacts and my opinion was that he was giving his opinion based on what his NHL contacts told him and what he saw during his tenure with the Isles(Doesn't mean Wang/Snow haven't changed their approach since then). So if people took what Botta was saying as he had an inside source in Isles-land then shame on them.

Botta is not perfect but at least he takes the info he can get and makes some educated guesses. I know I've learned a lot more about our prospects and potential prospects via Botta then anyone at Newsday or the Isles.

That's a much more restrained and realistic assessment of Botta than many people have. Just saying ...

Great post.

I don't blame Botta either.

The whole thing is a bit ridiculous. If this offends anyone that wasn't the intent, but it seems to me that many people read into the reports WHAT THEY WANTED TO. And now that things didn't turn out how they wanted it to, well, people are looking for someone to blame.

Blame yourself. Sorry but all the 100mill/10 yr rubbish came from Dredger. Then everyone who reported that quoted Dredger's blog in their report like nhl.com and the latimes and nypost. (Did anyone else notice that they reported it in their stories almost verbatim?) Then we get the "source close to the situation that can't be named"...ok, right. Then we hear from the agent (whom Galdoff said btw that he didn't go public on anything even though he's been commenting through twitter) but we heard from Garth NOTHING about an offer, but just a conversation.

Well, then the internet gets abuzz and fans get moist but few take the time to consider the sources and actually read what was printed, just what they wWANTED to be printed.

Hey, I get the anger. I wanted him here and I was willing to see the Isles go 9 mill for 8 years. But I also knew that the chances of us winning out over the Kings and Devs was 20% at best and nothing put out in the media made me thing at any time we were frontrunners on either.

What did our management say that made any of us think otherwise? If the answer was nothing, then ask yourself if you were putting into the reports what you HOPED would happen rather than what was actually being said.

Hey all. Just wanted to say I absolutely agree with this. I Haven't posted in a while but I read religiously. The reason for not posting is because of all the negative posts the past few years. I know people are entitled to there opinions but things have been getting beaten to death. I feel your pain and it kills me not having the Isles in the playoffs every year. We also need to remember that Wang lost money every year since buying the team. (Not happy with being at the bottom my self) but the point is that the team would have wound up somewhere else if Wang had not bought them. We really need to look at the good and the bad. Worst being if Wang had not bought the team we would have to start routing for the debs or even worse (should I dare say) the Rags.
