Bring back...PRIDE OF THE ISLAND
It is now 5:52 pm eastern standard time....Ilya Kovalchuk is still unsigned.

The Islanders got their long awaited decision from the town...

Expect a major announcement from the Islanders soon.

Have a good evening Islander fans. :)

Kovi is flying to LA to go face to face to try to get a deal done. DD had it on the NHL blog and its all over the blogosphere. It appears he wants to play there. Good, keep the bastid out west and out of our backyard. Hurts the Devs but they will also go after Frolov IMO so not great for us.

An ominous silence in L.A.?
07.13.2010 / 9:18 p.m. ET

The silence out of Los Angeles is deafening.

While Kings writer Rich Hammond reports that the team is maintaining its silence concerning Ilya Kovalchuk, Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times said via Twitter that the deal may be dead, "this time for good." The holdup, she reports, is money.

At what point will this guy call a press conference complete with airshow, fireworks
and world wide simulcast?

He's becoming hockey's version of Brett Favre.

Repeat a lie frequently enough....
Is this normal? Is this how the process works for bidding for elite talent? This just seems bizarre. In the past, was the public not privy to these things because we did not have instant access to information as we do today; or are we just witnessing something really, really strange. I have no problems with Kovy trying to secure as much money for himself as he can (as Floyd Mayweather recently stated, "I'm a PRIZE fighter, of course I fight for the money. DUH!") but I don't think I've ever seen anything so strange, especially with the Kings constantly changing their stance. This seems more like chaos than it does bargaining and negotiating.
Authority without wisdom is like a heavy axe without an edge: fitter to bruise than polish.

Anger makes dull men witty, but it keeps them poor.

In the beginning, the Universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

I think his "agent" is Russian mob. How else do you explain he's now had offers from us, Devs, LAK and Russia with no signature yet
I miss these :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: and want more of them

A VERY GOOD REASON TO WEIGHT
Why the NYI are saving Doug’s deal for later
July 16th, 2010 by admin 33 Comments

Prior to the opening of unrestricted free agency, Garth Snow strategically let it slip that the Islanders were bringing back Doug Weight for another season. Although today is July 16 and a deal has not been made official, there’s little reason to think the general manager has changed his mind.

Snow’s reasoning is as smart as it is simple. The Islanders captain is not going anywhere else. Over the last two years, Weight maybe has not become an extension of management, but he has become part of the fabric of the organization. His family hosted John Tavares and Matt Moulson at their house for the entire 2009-10 season. Weight has a strong relationship with both Snow and Islanders owner Charles Wang. In the on-going battle for free agents, Weight is an asset as a well-respected recruiter.

The Islanders will easily reach the salary cap floor, even if they don’t sign another second or third-shelf unrestricted free agent between now and the start of the 2010-11 season. However, there has been no rush to finalize every detail of Doug’s deal. When Snow has completed the rest of his business this offseason - including Moulson’s scheduled arbitration case and the inevitable “dropping lines in the water” for the still-available-and-getting-scared-stickless UFAs - the Islanders can utilize Weight’s bonus-laden contract to satisfy any remaining salary cap needs.

Players over the age of 35 who sign a one-year contract can have performance bonuses included in their contracts. As he did last season, Doug Weight will have a few performance bonuses in his 2010-11 contract with the Islanders.

I loved DLK's comment # 17

My “rebuttal”:

1. Doug Weight would seem to be little more than an overpaid babysitter.
2. Weight’s presence here does not seem to have influenced any free-agent of real significance to sign here.
3. Holding off on a contract so you can overload it with bonuses as a means of hitting the cap floor is reprehensible.

Is Botta going to make excuses for Garth Snow or will Snow make excuses?
I cannot wait for more BS from Snow's side. You guys watch, when Kovalchuk signs somewhere and some of ours fans whine, Snow will leak a story claiming he is considering suing Apple because his iPhone connection cut out.
Bastid.

:goofy2:

ahhhh, the saga continues.

To use an overage, recovering from injury player as the way to reach the cap is ridiculous. What if we are still 5 million below the cap? Weight gets 1m + 4m in incentives he most likely never reach, so essentially we still have a roster not worth the minimum NHL level?

I like Weight and can't blame him here for this type of thinking. Don't you think the GM could better spend that money to improve the team, or is it a way for Wang to have a payroll below what is mandated by the NHL with a loophole and just cheap his way out?

Has nothing to do with being smart, Weight has no where else to go. Otherwise, he would be out of here quicker than Neil Smith.

Sure, give him an assistant coaching job. hell, the way how things look, he'll be our next coach in no time.

This statement alone is the biggest F'N joke from Botta.

This is actually year 4 of the rebuild.
How in god's name can ANY sane, intelligent fan still take this regime seriously?
I want to know. Time after time, excuse after excuse their off ice managment/maneuvers
continue to read like a script for a standup act.

They finally assemble some players we can honestly admire and look forward to seeing develop
but the cord for nurturing them is cut again and again.

I just cannot make sense of this other than everything we've feared all along is true.

 :dontknow:
