In an effort to gain some perspective on what's been an odd offseason, I propose this off-the-wall query ...

There have been sooooooo many bad off seasons over the last two decades that it makes it almost impossible to decipher which one was the worst. At this point they are all blending together in my mind. :disgraced:

Milstein's condemn the Coliseum summer, but followed closely by the Neil Smith era.
"clearly it's Rick DiPietro's stupidity that's put the islanders in this situation getting into an altercation when a game was over..." Keith Jones on VS

"But the Coliseum became a repository for all the team's troubles, a convenient scapegoat. There were suggestions that no major free agent ever would set foot in such a decrepit place. We have two words for anyone making that argument: Fenway Park. History says free agents would play in an old boxcar if they got enough money and had a chance to win." - Mark Herrmann

That's a tough call. I can't remember another season when the ownership has caused this much grief. Between the Lighthouse BS, the non renewal of contracts, the tease of signing Kovalchuk then finding out we only offered a 1 year deal, admission to non-NHL scrimmage, the China training camp fiasco, and the first time I don't want to buy a ticket plan could make this one the worst and we still have 50 days to go before camp. But we can get cupcakes at a game now.
I sold it all, retired and moved to Fabulous Las Vegas!

This one really sucks because we just had a great draft that lifted our hopes
and reminded us that we could get better but all the other stuff has
left us in a state of that famous Kathy Bates/James Caan movie.

Gosh, how I hope I wake up to good Islanders news just ONE day this summer.

This past summer was the worst. Hands down, for all the reasons stated in previous posts.

We are a rudderless ship, going in circles past the same friggin' landmarks with no captain at the helm.

If I could find it there was this great cartoon of skeleton like pirates on a decrepit old raft and captioned something like Islanders Lost At Sea. Can't remember where I saw it but it was years ago.

Sorry part is, it's still relevant.

Put the Cup Back in Our Lobby Where It Belongs

Hands down, it was the summer where the Islanders tried to trade their only super-star, Ziggy Palffy, to the Rangers. (I believe that was also the Hoistgate summer.)

I don't even want to mention that we were only going to get back two house painters (Harvey and Sundstrom) and cash for Milstein's pockets in return. And I certainly won't mention how this ridiculous deal only died because the redoubtable Gary Bettman, a former Islanders fan himself, stood up for us fans (and really, the integrity of the league) and quashed the deal.

C'mon, losing a draftnik, an old alumnus whom we will probably retain in some lesser capacity, and a color guy this summer, and some other little side issues, are all disturbing, but these things does not even begin to approach the ignominy of the summer in which we tried to dump the team's only star to our worst enemy. Now that was a summer of infamy and shame.

Hang in there Webby and Rifle! Nice thread, 5-9-19.

Not that its number one, but this one should be in the top 5-

1979

For those of us who remember, we had just lost a semifinal series to the Rangers 4-2, a series we were heavily favored to win. The Canadiens feared facing us in the finals, but we failed to reach it. We had to listen to Rangers fans al summer long

and there were rumors that the team was going to be broken up, that the gm and coach might be gone because the team always seemed to come up short.

Fortunately, the following year shut all that up, but 1979's summer was a brutal summer for Islanders fans. Who knew we'd have several in the 90's and now that would surpass it for very different reasons.

The summer when Neil Smith got fired and Pat Lafontaine left and the ensuing aftermath. Still laugh my ass off to this day.

I dont think this off season has been too bad. With the exception of signing Yablonski, i think we're doing ok. Granted we need to make a few more signings to hit the cap floor but I think we're on the right track. We should have signed a few more guys earlier tho. Maybe The Garth is holding out to see if maybe he can get someone better for cheaper... I dunno. I was more upset with last years off season and the season before.
After a narrow victory in 1994, Boston Bruins defenseman Al Iafrate was asked why, in the closing moments of the game, he had fired the puck around the boards rather than into the empty net. His reply? "Empty-net goals are for faggots"
