Pardon us all for being a little shell shocked here. I forgot, we have been a stellar organization that has made no PR glitches, we have our front office intact, we're getting a new arena and we've signed five top level free agents, putting us right at the top of the cap.  :bag:

Can't blame anyone for looking at this as the next STUPID thing we could potentially screw up, myself included.

The fact that they got one right will remain a debate, but we're all happy MM will be on the ice opening night.

Let's worry about Matt Moulson's contract next year and hope it is an issue. At least we'll get one more season out of him.

And while I am not confident by any measure, but a lot can happen in a year from the standpoint of how (or by who) this organizations runs.

I'm not debating that. I'm saying this thread was about Moulson signing a 1 yr deal. The guy had 1 good year, we gave a 1 yr contract before arbitration. What is the problem what that? There is no problem with it.
But I knew the "can't wait until he leaves next year" and "teams a joke anyway" responses would come into the thread...because they're in every thread, no matter what topic. Aren't there enough threads to complain in already? A lot of people are turning into that contingent of Red Sox fans who took the "Tortured Boston fan" as their identity before 2004. "We're cursed, we'll never win, any success is just setting us up for failure down the road" :blah: :blah: :blah:
It was really fun trying to talk to those people about their team...just like it is trying to talk hockey here.

This so called "complaining" comes from the most dedicated group of fans anywhere, and that is us. I believe the reason is our passion for this team, not our disdain for it.

And you have to admit, the comedy of errors we have committed over the past 12 months are one of two things- comical or pathetic.

I have mentioned before that I get knocked for my "rose colored glasses" take on this team and deservedly so. I'm an optimist. But the tone of this site has changed over the past year or so to one that contians a lot of posts that slam this team. Again, deservedly so. I'm only saying that based on what we have done, I understand why that has happened. To me and a lot of others. Some do it with humor, some with anger, but the points are all valid. We have sucked as an organization and it shows both on and off the ice. No need to wonder when you go to the NHL free agent blog that there were 345 transactions and we were mentioned in like 5 of them.

I also know if we start winning the entire personality of this site changes.

It's because we're all Islanders, I guess.

I also know if we start winning the entire personality of this site changes.

And therein lies the (dilemma, beauty, contradiction, confusion, hypocrisy, passion.....choose your adjective...or would that be noun?).

If all that is happening here is that people are frustrated with losing, then we would certainly expect to see an uptick in the mood and tone of NYIC when we return to winning ways. But I don't think that is what is happening with most of the most hard-core of the fanbase, at least that's not the sense I get when I read the content of the frustrations which are posted here. I sometimes wonder what will happen to those criticisms of management when the Isles turn it around. If, hoping beyond hope, the Isles do turn it around next year, why would the criticisms that are being stated today suddenly become invalid? Will Wang have suddenly turned into a competent owner? Ditto for Snow as a GM. There would seem to be a disconnect there...or maybe it is just one of the advantages of being a fan and having a platform to espouse your view with no real consequences? And that is exactly why message boards can be so fun/infuriating.

Safe to say, I am one of the most optimistic fans here (that's really not saying much though, is it?! :P ) but my optimism is rooted in the belief that the re-build is going quite well and the talent in the player-pool is strong. I'm of the belief that our kids are developing well and it is due to good coaching and having quality people in the organization (something I think easily gets overlooked). But I could be wrong. As fans, we often are wrong but have trouble seeing it through the passions we carry. Point in case, this board was in love - LOVE - with Andy Hilbert just a few short years ago. "Awesome Andy" was touted as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Clearly, that didn't work out quite the way many had hoped. [EDIT: For the record - I never understood the infatuation with Hilbert. Seemed like a nice enough guy though] Why didn't this board's lust for Hilbert pan out in performance? Because we're just fans and we're prone to the effects of our own biases. I'm not thrilled that our FO often comes across as "odd" (trying to be diplomatic here!) but that's all background noise to me. If the Isles regress this year, then kool-aiders like myself will have to step back and ask why. I'm not afraid of what those answers might be, I just don't see them as being valid at this point in time. Ultimately (and as it should) this will all get resolved on the ice.

Anyway, back to topic, glad that Moulson is back with the team. Hope he is part of a very successful 2010-11 season.

Thank you Dave, well said.

To slightly change an old quote,

It was really fun trying to talk to those people about their team...just like it is trying to talk hockey here.

You are right Oz. It's from the constant conditioning we receive, year in and year out, that it has skewed our view of the crest. It's a real shame too, and I'm just as guilty as anyone else. I used to look at the :isles: and get feelings of pride, can't wait for the season to start, excited about signings and trades, who's waiting in the wings to come up, etc, but now the first thoughts are cynical, like what's Wang's motive behind it, or how will this blow up in our faces. Who's to blame for a fundamental change in my outlook of this team? The increasing criticism of this team by the fans here or the results of actions by the team itself.

I want something to be proud of, like signing Kovalchuk, or winning a divisional title, something that the NHL writers around the continent will praise. When did that happen last, and what's the ratio of embarrassing stories to feel good stories about this current ownership and team?

I want those days to return when it's about how good we are as a team and organization, and when they do (if they ever do...see what I mean about my fundamental view) all of us fans will be writing with a different view point.

I hear ya, Webby. I have always been one of the most vocal critics of Wang's reign and how he is running the franchise into the ground. Just look back to my posts around the neil smith/DP contract timeframe. I'm pretty sure most of my posts were extremely critical of the organization. Not a lot has changed since then so I understand everyone's frustration because I know it comes from the passion to see this organization do well. I'm not saying everyone has to turn into Katie Strang and just ignore the obvious flaws with management but there has to be a balance. For me personally, I just want to talk hockey sometimes and not be constantly reminded that, according to some, there's no hope. There is hope and the hope is taveras, okposo, bailey, martin etc.
