Share Amy Brady, owner of the Cupcake Gourmet in Huntington Village, makes a “Funfetti cupcake” desired by most of the children that walk through Brady’s bakery doors. With the most unique and colorful frosting swirled together in rainbow fashion, this cupcake is one of her best sellers.

This highly sought-after cupcake is now making its way to the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum as Brady has become the newest sponsor to form an agreement with the New York Islanders.

So how did this crazy delicious partnership take place?

“I was at a game and I was trying to find a concession to eat,” said Brady. “I was thinking to myself, ‘What do I want? What do I want? How great would it be to have a cupcake right now?’”

At that moment, Brady understood she was destined to begin a new business venture. Armed with a Cupcake Cart, Brady and her staff will begin selling orange and blue tie-dye frosted cupcakes at all Islanders home games.

“I like the fact that we’re a young team, maturing as a team. It’s a fun thing. It’s an exciting thing,” Brady said.

A long-time fan of the Islanders, Brady is extremely excited to start selling her cupcakes, but she knows baking the right amount of cupcakes will be challenging in the beginning.

“At the beginning, I think it will be a lot of baking too many cupcakes and donating the excess to the Ronald McDonald House down the street (it’s really like 15 minutes away) from the Coliseum,” Brady said.

The Cupcake Gourmet is extremely unique. Unlike most bakeries, Brady has found her niche market, specializing-in and only producing cupcakes since she opened in March of 2008.

“All the cupcakes that we make here, like the candy bar ones, are unique,” Brady said. “For example, the Snickers cupcake, we take a chocolate cupcake, we chop up Snickers and bake it inside. That was my idea.”

“We decided we wanted to make a Cannoli cupcake. So we asked, ‘how do we translate a Cannoli to a cupcake?’ We made a chocolate chip cupcake, hollowed out the inside, put Cannoli cream inside and then decorated the outside with frosting and sprinkles.”

“Every week we come up with more ideas. Now we ask people for suggestions, but in the beginning it was all just my ideas.”

But even a pioneer like Brady has her go-to cupcake when she’s in need of sugar fix.

“Without a doubt, without hesitation, red velvet is my favorite. It’s a cocoa cupcake. It has vanilla cream cheese frosting. I will choose that every single time I have to choose a cupcake, but with these new Islander cupcakes coming to the Coliseum, they’re a close second.”

I think it's a cool idea. Good for her.
An actual Islanders fan with a concept and she gets her wish.

As for the cost? 8 bucks???
I hope SMG doesn't get a piece if it's that high. I'd guess 5.
Personally, I'm not a cake, nor cupcake person. But we have alot of
cake eating chubba-lubba's so at least we won't have to worry about any of our fans tossing
one of these messy things onto the ice and causing a bit of a delay.
Ref would call an "icing".

(I hear crickets, that was bad)

I can see Goldy eating 10 at a game.

So, they don't have a radio team, don't have a PR head, don't have an assistant GM, don't have many scouts, don't have a head of player development that I know of..........but they have cupcakes.

I don't go much for the fads and the "gourmet" flavor of the day type stuff. That said, cupcakes seem to be huge (but can a cupcake really be "gourmet"???). In Brooklyn and Manhattan, they are all the rage with the hipsters and younger folks. Go figure.

Official cupcakes for NHL teams? Seriously, New York Islanders?

By Greg Wyshynski

In some ways, there have been cupcakes in professional sports for years. Like the weak teams at the start of a college football schedule, or the overly soft players mockingly compared to pastry.

Perhaps you think the New York Islanders employ a few cupcakes. Perhaps you think the New York Islanders themselves are a cupcake on the schedule of NHL playoff teams. The Islanders are apparently comfortable with all of it, because they are the first pro hockey team with an official team cupcake beginning next season.

Amy Brady, owner of Cupcake Gourmet in Huntington, has entered into an agreement with Savor, the concessionaire of the Nassau Coliseum, to split revenues from cupcakes she sells from a cart at Islanders home games.

But seriously: Hockey and cupcakes?

"I think it fits very well. I've watched the Islanders eat cupcakes before. I don't see it as a big jump," she said.

But seriously: Hockey fans and cupcakes?

For example, would she take it as a compliment or an insult to see one of her cupcakes fly over the glass an onto the ice to celebrate a goal or protest a call, as is hockey tradition with everything from hats to octopi?

"WOW!" she said, processing the scenario. "I think I would be sad to see it go to waste, you know?"

And would she be saddened or inspired if one of her cupcakes was, say, crumbled in the face of a New York Rangers fan who was invading the Nassau Coliseum cheap seats?

After a long, loud, somewhat sinister giggle, she said, "I'm going to have to say no comment. I'm going to walk the safe line on this one. I've seen the wars that break out at Islanders/Rangers games."

Yeah, but that was B.C.: Before Cupcakes.

Her relationship with the Islanders was confectionery before it became unconventional.

"A lot of the Islanders management come into my shop for cupcakes, so we became friendly. They gave me tickets to a game one night," she said. "I got hungry, was looking for something to eat, and I walked around the entire concourse and thought, 'Wait a minute: There are no cupcakes here. We need cupcakes as the Coliseum!'"

She started trying to convince Islanders brass to have a cart inside the arena. They liked the idea, and took it to their concessionaire, who surprisingly agreed to a deal.

Surprising in the sense that arena concessions are a monopoly and, frankly, not a place where you find small local businesses peddling their wares like a farmer's market. Cupcake Gourmet is only 2 years old, though it earned an "easy to feel like a child in a candy store" review in the New York Times.

Brady began to realize she had somewhat beaten the system. "I was very naive. I found out much later that it's a huge coup and a big deal," she said, citing shock and awe from other local businesses that had been banging on the door for years.

So what are her plans for the Islanders cupcakes? First, they won't all be in the team colors. "I'm going to throw some curve balls in there. Not everyone wants a blue and orange and white cupcake. You'll have people walking around with the orange and blue tongues," she said.

"Which might not be a bad thing: You stick out your tongue, show your team spirit."

Brady said there may be some player-specific cupcakes in the future, mentioning forward Trent Hunter(notes) as a possible inspiration. (We are, of course, hoping for the Rick DiPietro(notes) Cupcake, which is yours for 15 years but arrives as an empty wrapper.)

No word on the price of the cupcakes, but they've typically sold in jumbo ($3.50), regular ($2.50) and mini ($1.50) sizes at the shop. She said her cart will sell singles and mini boxes of four. There will also be cupcake giveaways during the game, and the cupcakes will be a part of the Islanders' kids' club.

That's a reason this deal is a significant one. Pro sports, and especially hockey, are chasing family dollars. Cupcakes are, like hot dogs, an inherently fun food that appeals to a younger demographic. So this could be 'wave of the future' stuff if it works.

Furthermore, the inclusion of a small local business with one location could signal a change in policy that could see a better relationship between teams and communities all over the League.

For Brady, she's just happy to be in business with the Islanders and part of the cupcake revolution. (She'll appear on Food Network's "Cupcake Wars" soon.)

"Cupcakes are enjoying a time in history that they've never had before," she said. "I hope they haven't reached their peak yet."

In case you've ever wondered about the subtle differences between cupcakes and the current state of the New York Islanders, there you go ...

First, there was the Double Chili Game. Now, there will be the Cupcake game. Free cupcakes if the Isles score six goals versus the Rangers ... but make sure they aren't handed out during the game, lest people shower Henrik with them. Maybe Avery will act as human shield.

Well, at least we'll know that the sprinkles on our cup cakes aren't mouse droppings. funny, but I'd love to see a league wide analysis of "affordably priced' stadium food. We would not fare well in that department, would we?

SAVOR THE COLISEUM MENUNassau Coliseum receives high marks for cleanliness of concessionsWednesday, 07.28.2010 / 4:53 PM / News By David Hochman There are 107 different arenas and stadiums in North America that host NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL competition. All of them also house numerous concession stands selling beer, hot dogs, pretzels, soda and almost anything else a sports fan’s heart could desire. Unfortunately, almost all of them were found to have health violations in 2009, according to a recent study by ESPN. Only ten of those stadiums and arenas aced their health department inspections and only one of the ten came from the New York Metropolitan area: Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Overall, government health inspectors discovered that almost 30 percent of the sports venues had serious health violations. Cockroaches crawled over soda dispensers in Pittsburgh, mold grew in ice machines in Milwaukee and mouse droppings were discovered in front of and around food service areas and cash registers at Madison Square Garden. Nothing at the Coliseum though. And it’s all a credit to the arena staff that fans see working hard game in and game out.

“We have a great team here and a great system in place,” said Brooke Camposano, Director of Food & Beverage at SAVOR, the SMG company that provides the Coliseum with its food and beverage services. “Our standard is always the highest it can be. And during an Islanders game or any event, our staff is always at its best.”

During hockey games, staff size can range from 150-180 members, from concession service workers to culinary cooks. With all those employees, managers are constantly on the move, making sure operations are running smoothly. They aren’t sitting behind a desk waiting for reports.

“The staff enjoys coming to work and many of them have been here for years,” said Nick Tierno, Senior Regional Vice President of SAVOR. “Management has a great relationship with the staff and that is reflected in their performance and the recent reports.”

Expectations before the ESPN report may have been the polar opposite of the actual findings. With so many new stadiums and arenas popping up around the continent in recent years, fans are expected to see the pristine outside look as the cover and assume the transfers within. Citi Field and Yankee Stadium, both of which opened two years ago, had near 50 percent of their concessions in violation of health codes. Nassau Coliseum first opened for business in 1972 and Nassau County Health inspectors, who show up at least four times every year, couldn’t find a single thing wrong with any of the 35-plus concession areas.

“It’s sometimes tougher being an old building,” Tierno said. “We have older appliances and it can be harder to keep things up to date and running so well. But, we do it.”

This recent study shows there are many sporting venues out there that need to take a second look at the way their operations are run. Fans are coming to enjoy themselves and can handle food-hangovers or stomach aches from overeating, but vendors are accountable for the preparation of those drinks and that food. The Coliseum has one chef whose sole job is to walk the concourse with his thermometer and make sure the sodas are cold and the hot dogs are, well, hot.

“Being one of only six major American sports venues without a single violation is a huge deal,” Camposano said. “It’s a tribute to everyone here at the Coliseum, from the hard-working staff to the dedicated managers. Everyone really does contribute to the success of our team.”
